View Full Version : Rolling on the changing table?

Dylan is very active. One of his latest tricks is to roll on the changing table while we are changing his diaper and it is starting to drive me bananas. If his diaper is just wet, it's not so bad I can go quick enough before he thinks to roll. But if it is a dirty diaper, UGH! Between trying to keep his handout of the poop and keep him from rolling I dread these changes.
How do I get him to stop rolling?
I've been telling him NO! Don't roll on the changing table. Then when I'm done changing him I will sit and tell him calmly that he can't roll on the changing table because he could fall off and get hurt. Yeah, I know he's 7.5 months old and doesn't understand but it doesn't hurt to get into a habit of things.
I sometimes have to physically restrain him from rolling, I hate that and so does he. But I'm just at a loss for what to do here. I've tried the floor and that is even worse he'll crawl away after he rolls. Half the time I can't even get him dressed again after the diaper change and he crawls around half dressed. That I don't really care about though. He could crawl around in his diaper for all I care as long as we aren't going out or having people over.
HELP!

Jeremy tries to roll all the time. Or he'll grab at the curtains that are closeby. I just usually give him something to play with, like a teether or a toy, and that keeps him happy. But I totally hear you on the poopy diapers. It's hard enough trying to clean them without them trying to get away.

What helped me was to let Amelia play with a toy that she liked for the duration of the diaper change. It was a special toy used only for diaper changes. Honestly, when we're out, I've let her hold the travel wipes container & its helped a bunch.

It's just one of those things. If you really think that he might roll off, then change him on the floor. Pretty much all kids become a nightmare to change. Hands in the poop, rolling, trying to get away... it's all just part of the changing experience. Not fun, but what can you do.
Like Darcy said, I try to give J a toy, book, another diaper, or anything that might hold his interest. It rarely works, though.

Mia went thru this stage too... thankfully, with her, it didn't last all that long. That and the fact that I swatted the changing pad to get her attention and it scared the bajeezus outta her!!! She still does it to a point but I always try to give her something to occupy her attention while we are changing... I'll give her a shoe - she's facsinated with shoe laces  or I'll give her an unopened box of whatever medication etc is stitting in the basket next to her changing table. Since it's not a toy that she gets to play with whenever, it's "new" and she likes to shake it like a rattle. Make sense?

I was just going to edit my post but Pam got in here and beat me to it!!!
Make sure he has some toys that are JUST for the changing time. Like I said, Mia gets the biggest kick out of a shoe or a med box - these are things she doesn't get to ever play with so they are always "special" and don't cost any extra money!!! :) You could always just put some Cheerios in a small Tupperware container - with the lid on, of course - and give him that to shake around too.

:duh: I never thought of giving him something to play with. If Eric is home I make him come and entertain Dylan while I chang him.

Tie him up, it worked with both of my wiggly boys
:scan::whistle:
JUST KIDDING!! :giggle: Though the thought did cross my mind b/c they were so dang wiggly
The toys definitely help  Another thing I did is I stuck some colorful pictures on the wall where the changing table was like that we "talked & pointed" at the pictures during the changing process :aok:
I do have to add that some days nothing worked & when we got out of the room I looked like I had wrestled a bear BUT the good news are... he will grow out of it
Right now rolling is such a new experience & he just can't stop to have his diaper change, it will just take precious time from his new adventure! :)

Riley's great entertainment for Jeremy, but I knew a sibling wouldn't help you in this situation.
Other times I just give Jeremy his pants to play with while I change him, but most of the time they just end up on the floor, so that's one more thing to worry about.

Umm, yeah...
Dylan's latest antics have me wondering why people have more than one kid. :awink:

For the first 6 months of Joe's life, I just kept saying "why does anyone ever have a second?" over and over.

Dennis, my hubby says that Eliot's first 6 months were the most stressful months in his life

Thanks everyone! :) I started giving him a little sample bottle of baby lotion that hasn't been open and he thinks it's great and keeps his interest to keep him from rolling. He seems to be enjoying it so much that he cries when I'm done changing him and I take it away.

Suggest you stash a few things with the changing supplies to rotate them. For example, Anya's been enthralled with a new toothbrush (still in the plastic wrapper) - that went into the diaper changing supplies area until interest wanes.
