It's a new posting party! :party3:

Let's get this party started with something to talk about. How about this?

What's your favorite flower? Is it blooming yet?

And if that's not enough to chew on, answer me this:

Do you hard boil eggs for Easter? If so, do you eat them?

TtownAnne
April 2nd, 2007, 12:45 PM
I love tulips, and mine aren't blooming yet, but I think I had some old bulbs so they might not show up at all. I do prefer pink tulips, but will be content with any color.

And yes, we do hardboil eggs for Easter for dying. It's just not normal to NOT dye eggs! And a few days after Easter I make a big plate of deviled eggs with them for me and DH to enjoy. :heee:

Here's my question for discussion - if you dye eggs, how do you do it? Paas egg kit? The old fashioned way with vinegar and food color? Crayons/markers and call it a day? :giggle:

Nichole
April 2nd, 2007, 12:49 PM
Mine is tulips, too. Love them in any color! My mom had some gorgeous ones in orange with yellow tips the other weekend. I dropped not very subtle hints to Brendon about how much I love tulips. Maybe someday he'll wise up and surprise me with some. ;)

We boil and dye eggs, too. Well, we didn't the past couple of years because I got lazy and figured the boys wouldn't care, but we will be doing it this year. I'm looking forward to egg salad sandwiches.

I do the easy Paas kits. They're only 99 cents, and require less thinking.

I'm a horrible mom. We don't dye eggs. It's not something we did at our house growing up, so it just didn't carry over.

Jessica
April 2nd, 2007, 12:56 PM
I like daffodils. We had a bed of them at our old house, but none at our new house. We drove by the other day to see them, and they're so pretty! It looks like we have hyacinth at our new house, which is gorgeous, and I think I have a random tulip coming up as well. I'm going to plant lots of pansies in the flower beds out front in a week or so.

We'll be hard boiling eggs too! We usually go the old fashioned vinegar and food coloring route, but will probably just go with a kit this year.

Becca

fave flower?? I guess lilies...I've never really been the type of person who had flowers, but we will be planting some this year. My MIL works at a greenhouse and her and my FIL have an AMAZING backyard every year. they're even considering entering the "Beautiful Yards" contest this year. My Grams has a real knack for flowers too...but b/c she's getting up in age (79 this Nov) she finds it a little harder to keep her yard as nice as she'd like too.

I only remember doing the painted egg thing once as a kid...maybe we'll do it next year when the boys are more into it. For now I can remain lazy. :)

I don't know that I have a favorite. I love Gerber daisy's and daisy's in general. But I really just love any vibrant colored flower!

We hard boil eggs and I have done every kit known to man and the old fassion way as well. This year I found this suction thing to hold the eggs and then these things that look like Q-tips with color in them for the kids to have fun with. I have done them every year including the year Tylor was 9 months old!

What's your favorite flower? Is it blooming yet?

Mine would be tulips( white or "black") or Hydrangia's and nope not anywhere close to blooming yet..mind you I don't actually have any planted on the property :shuffle: I'm going to this year for sure!

Do you hard boil eggs for Easter? If so, do you eat them?

Yep, I boil about a half dozen, we usually paint them the day before Easter, we write everyone's name on it with white crayon first..everyone alway's ends up leaving them behind though and I have egg salad for the next 2 day's

I love daffodils and tulips!!
I have daffodils coming up, I hope our cold turn in weather this week doesn't hurt them.
I need to do tulips for next year!

We have about 3 kits that I picked up to do the eggs with. And we will hard boil them first.I like to put them on my salads.

My favorite flower is tulip too...I also love lilacs! Neither are really blooming around here yet. Soon though.

We do dye eggs...actually we didn't last year, but Jackson knows what's going on more now, so we'll do it this year. We're leaving for vacation on Sunday, so I think we'll dye them Wednesday so we have some time to eat them...I'm only going to boil half a dozen...

Tulips! And no they are not blooming yet. I do have some daffodils blooming though.

We have never hardboiled eggs for Easter but I bought a dye kit this year! I am very excited! And I will probably eat them. I am undecided at this point!

Melissa

I love tulips and they are blooming! We do dye eggs for Easter, that is Reed's job though, mostly because he loves doing it. Which means, I don't do a thing! :woo: We buy the egg kids, I couldn't find Paas so I brought home Dudley :dunno: Reed said, "Where's the paas?"

Flowers? That's a tough one. I love love love tulips. They are gorgeous. Mine are up, but not blooming yet (I can't wait. We planted extra last fall!). However, I also love lily-of-the-valley and lilacs.

Eggs? I did them last year and the kids had a blast! We'll do it again this year, with a kit, most likely (I saw a Hello Kitty one at Target and Norah would pee herself if I got it). None of us eat the eggs, though (vile). So we'll take them to my parents house and give them to them.

I know I've posted this in years past, but maybe 2 or 3 years ago, my MIL dyed eggs w/ Aidan at night, left them out all night, did an egg hunt the next day, and let them sit out all day that day. Then my FIL proceeded to eat one. I just about vomited in disgust.

Melissa, I just noticed your profile line. My allergies are killing me, too. :dead: Claritin isn't even touching them. All of our avocado trees were blooming in the last couple of weeks and now the orange tree is. Pollen hell!

I like tulips (not blooming yet) and roses (not blooming yet) and lilacs (also not blooming yet!). I like most flowers!

We hard-boiled and dyed eggs this year. I had my mom do it with the kids. Tom bought the kit. He said it was funny buying an Easter egg coloring kit and Passover matzoh at the same time! We'll use the eggs for Seder (you eat hard boiled eggs during the meal) and maybe to make tuna salad (which is something you can actually eat during Passover). Easter is hard because it usually falls during Passover which severely limits our dietary choices.

I just changed it too.... I'm :dead: with my allergies right now. The only thing I'm allergic to is tree pollen. Due to the warm/cold bursts we've been having, they've been warning on the news that this is going to be the worst pollen season in years. Since Atlanta had it a few weeks ago, it has worked its way north. :dead:

Killing us here, too. :dead: Aidan's itching away and we started him on his Zyrtec 3 weeks ago. I am doubling up and giving him Patanol eye drops. Norah and Elliott are sneezing machines, so I just bought them some Claritin this weekend. And I am a itchy, watery mess, despite my Flonase and Patanol. I refuse to take Zyrtec again...it makes me a zombie.
I hate spring!! And Chris just looks at all of us like we have the plague. Curse him.

Are the eye drops Rx, Karri? My eyes are what bug me the most. They feel like they have St Ives apricot scrub in them.

I think tree pollen is my biggest allergen too, Melissa. I have a suspicion that I'm also a little allergic to grass as well, though.

Yeah Amanda, Easter egg dye and matzoh is an interesting mix. I like matzoh bread slathered in cream cheese or butter. :lick:

Karri
April 2nd, 2007, 03:03 PM
Yes, they are Rx and they are a godsend. Instant relief. Both Aidan and I have an Rx for them. We're both allergic to tree pollen (and Aidan ragweed) and I am allergic to cats (and I have one) and its most necessary for our survival  You must must must ask for some.

Nichole
April 2nd, 2007, 03:04 PM
I think I will. The OTC allergy drops work ok for me, but they burn like a mofo going in. And then my eyes are itchy again not very long after that. :gah:

I like matzoh and I'm Jewish. Although I don't observe passover so I eat it because I want to, not because I have to, and that probably makes a difference.

Nichole
April 2nd, 2007, 03:33 PM
Yeah, I probably wouldn't like it much if I had to eat it for that long and forgo nice fluffy yeasty bread. (sorry, is it Passover now? did I just make it worse? :heee: )

Passover starts tonight at sundown. I think, technically, you're not supposed to eat bread after like noon today. I had pizza for lunch to get my last bread fix.

Flower... bluebonnets!! Which Eliot renamed to "blonnets" when he was around 2 and that's what we have been calling them since. There are blooming but not in my yard, we do hope to take a nice drive out in the country & get some pics of the boys in the "blonnets"

Eggs... yep, we boild eggs for dying, keep them nicely in the fridge until I'm ready to eat them (a few days) since I'm the only one that eats them around here. I think it's the only time I buy tuna so I can make tuna salad with eggs. We have done Paas & the old fashion way, this year Eliot found a Cars (movie) kit at the grocery store so that's what we're using.

Allergies... mine haven't started to bother me (yet), I know I just jinxed myself. Both boys have been waking up sneezing & coughing so they're definitely being affected by them. Why did they have to inherit my allergies? :(

Me neither! Everytime I see it sitting on the shelves at the grocery store I'm convinced it's the same jar that's been there for years.

My favorite (spring) flower? Lilacs! And nope, definitely not blooming here yet. My dad has a giant shrub on the side of his house that's perfect for smelling. I can't wait to go over there and get a huge bunch for our house.

Becca

I love the cala lilly and NOTHING is blooming now, we are in the depths of Autumn and everything is dying and falling apart

I have never painted an egg in my life, so no we don't do them. I actually though I would make easter egg shaped biscuits this year and get the kids to decorate them with icing, like what we did for christmas. I think that would be fun for them, and they would be able to eat the proceeds

Nichole
April 2nd, 2007, 05:35 PM
Calla lilies are favs of mine, too.

Do you mean biscuits in the British sense of biscuits = tea cookies? Or fluffy buttermilk biscuits (that's what I picture when I hear that word  ). I just can't picture that type all decorated.

MrsPeacefrog
April 2nd, 2007, 05:43 PM
 Well biscuits are biscuits, we don't really call anything cookies, well I guess the choc chip cookie, but even then when the kids ask for one they ask for a biscuit  so I mean the type you would bake and decorate at christmas.

ie; these type

Nothing is blooming here. It's dreary now. That means no allergies yet though.

I do plan to dye eggs, maybe Thursday. I might go the old-fashioned route, but the Paas are likely more kid-friendly/easy to clean.

If there isn't a thread on this, what are people putting in Easter baskets?

MrsPeacefrog

 firstly I have to have a little heave at the concept of sultanas in my scone :puke: Not a fan of that, and secondly I see the difference now, in that first pic they just looked like regular scones. This is how our scones look

What's the consistency of those biscuits are they hard or soft?

MrsPeacefrog

How this turned into scones vs biscuit talk I don't know, but I just found this

http://separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.com/2006/07/baked-goods.html

Scones are sometimes likened to American biscuits, which is kind of true. But scones and biscuits are only as similar as British muffins are to what Americans call English muffins. Superficially, they look the same, but the tastes and textures are quite different. American muffins (e.g. blueberry muffins) have made their way here and become quite popular, though I have heard older people react to them with puzzlement--"that's not a muffin, that's a cake!"

This is obviously from a british site. We call english muffins just that too, and we call our regular muffins what you guys call them, I just thought it was interesting with the initial scone vs biscuit talk.

Mary DK
April 3rd, 2007, 12:34 AM
Biscuits are usually soft & if they are buttery flavored the better... they are also sometimes layered. They look a lot like the scones pic you posted.

MrsPeacefrog
April 3rd, 2007, 01:46 AM
Do you guys have scones?

I am understanding now more to what you call "biscuits" I remember reading a virginia andrews book when I was younger and this poor family only ever ate biscuits and lard gravy and I used to cringe at the concept, but now I am understanding it didn't mean the general cookie biscuit I know :lol2:

Clare

Hmm, I don't really have a favourite flower. Probably lily or tulip if I had to choose.

No we don't dye hard boiled eggs. I don't think that's done here, I've never heard of it before the boards. Easter is all about chocolate here

I haven't eaten American biscuits in at least 10 years but yummy, they are so good!

schwanda

We do have scones here but I think it's a relatively new phenomenon.

Dennis counts as a Jew, even if he likes matzoh. Anyone who likes gefilte fish is clearly Jewish! I tried it again last night and confirmed my belief that it's nasty (and this was a homemade variety, not the nasty stuff in the jars). Definitely an acquired taste!

Scones are completely delish, although they are more usually fancy coffeehouse fare around here to have with your double mocha latte whatever, than something you can get anywhere. Although I'm with Deb, the raisins in them are horrible. I like mine with blueberries or chocolate chips.

Mom's colonoscopy came back clear this morning! So her ovarian surgery can go forward tomorrow and hopefully stop the excruciating pain she's had since January.

Hi all!

Ugh, I'm a bit annoyed today. I think Sarah is supposed to start therapeutic horseback riding this morning. But I'm not sure. It doesn't help that the woman running the place is an airhead. She and I talked about a month ago and she said she'd send me some paperwork. I finally got it this past Friday. She said some of it needs to be filled out by her doctor. First off, her doctor couldn't possibly fill out papers with two days' notice. Second off, it's not clear on any of the paperwork which ones the doctor needs to fill out. Also, she never said on any of it that we start today for sure. So I called and left a message and I'm not dragging Sarah out there unless I'm sure she has lessons and is okay to go without all her paperwork filled out.

Sarah is also battling a double EI. Poor girl. The weird thing is she seems fine. I only brought her in yesterday because the audiologist picked up on it at her hearing test this past Friday. Normally I'm up half the night with her screaming when this happens. :dunno:

Karri

Clare - now that is easter done right :aok:

Not really a fan of the American biscuit. Too greasy for me. Now the scone... :lick: I love me a scone in any flavor or even plain. It reminds me of college.

Amy - usually Hippotherapy requires a referral or an Rx from a primary physican in order for insurance to pay for any of it (assuming your insurance will cover some/all of it).

I love scones, too. :lick: They're denser than biscuits, and a bit drier at times, too. (I don't think I've ever had a greasy biscuit, Karri. :dead: The ones I've had are always light and fluffy. :lick: )

I love cream cheese/blueberry scones. Or cranberry. No raisins (sultanas :giggle: ), though. Gross.

I doubt therapy is covered by my insurance. I dragged Sarah out anyway since I read and the physician release is for when she gets on the horse, which I knew she wasn't doing today. Sarah liked the horse, and she was okay on the simulated horse, but pretty freaked about the instructor or her assistant touching her. Typical of Sarah. No big deal, really. I want to continue, but DH isn't so sure. It's $50/lesson, which isn't terrible, but he doesn't know what Sarah will get out of it at this age. The woman who runs the school is a special ed teacher, so she obviously knows what she is doing with Sarah. She worked well with her, and I think Sarah will get something out of it. I don't know exactly what, but I see this as beneficial. So DH and I are going to talk about it tonight, which basically means he'll be a tightwad about the cost and her age and :blahblah: and I'll try to convince him that this will be helpful.

In the meantime, I'm going to go do something I may regret later. I'm taking Sarah to a movie. I haven't seen one in ages, and this one is rated G, so people won't get too mad if Sarah acts up. I have a gift card, so it's not like I have to pay anyway. I am fully prepared to leave in the middle if necessary. Sarah has been to the movies before, so I don't think it will be a problem.

Well thanks to all your talk about biscuits vs. scones I went to the grocery with my "time off" from the boys (they were in daycare for the afternoon b/c I had a dr. app't) to buy all my necessary ingredients to bake some of each of my own. Thanks again!
I hustled my butt off (on the upside I refrained from buying usless stuff we didn't need) and got home with enough time to make the dough and popped them in the oven just as I left to get the boys. I can smell them...and they smell sooooo goood!
:lick:  Just thought I'd share!!

Anne: Great news on your Mum, I hope the surgery goes well.

Today is my u/s I am very excited, as I have been feeling the little one wiggling around in there and I can't wait to see a nice clear pic of him/her.

We also had ANOTHER builder come over last night and he tried talking us out of doing the extension at all  I have had so many conflicting opinions on this that I just don't know who to listen to anymore. At this rate we will be done in November 2020.

I agree, they're not greasy... unless you're like this people I used to know & fry them in a pan with lots of butter :screwy: :puke:

So, I got home from work to find out that Eliot got his first digits from a girl in his class. Blair picked him up & Eliot told him that Faith had given him her phone number so that they could set up a playdate

Okay, the weather here has been humid but warm... today's high was like 89 or something like that. Tomorrow is suppose to be 75 & Wed it will be in the mid-60's, that's 20 degrees in a couple of days & lots of cloudy days... not wonder my fibro is acting up this week, I'm so tired for lack of sleep it's not even funny :dead:

So, has anybody gone to any Easter egg hunts?
We went to one on Saturday at my boss' church. Ian had his little Easter party/egg hunt at school today. Tomorrow me & Ian have MOPS meeting & we'll be doing an egg hunt & picnic lunch. Eliot has his Spring party on thursday & they're also doing an egg hunt. Then off course the bunny will be hiding some eggs on Sunday.

You think my kids will be tired of hunting for eggs by then? :giggle:

Clare

Sultanas are dried grapes. They're bigger and juicier the raisins.

TtownAnne
April 3rd, 2007, 11:22 PM

Alyssa

Product description

Sultanas belong to the grapevine family (Vitaceae) and are native to the Caspian Sea. Currants, sultanas and raisins, including those still on the bunch, are known collectively as "raisins. The difference between these three dried fruits is explained below:

Thankyou for explaining about the digits, Mary. I was thinking digits as in fingers and toes and couldn't possibly understand what you meant
Sorry about the confusion, glad I was able to clear it out for you

I hadn't heard of sultanas until now... learn something new everyday

My aunt called me right when I was putting the kiddos to bed, she was freaking out about the weather & wanted to make sure I was aware of it... well, it didn't even come our way! I can see she's been watching too many news/weather broadcast... they go crazy as soon as a few drops fall from the sky

 Mary.

I am about to get my kids and myself ready to go for the u/s, tony will be home in 30 minutes.

I don't want to drink the water, they always end up telling me to pee it out so they can do an internal u/s so I don't know why I bother doing it. But I will stick to orders cause knowing my luck if I don't it will be the one time they do want my bladder full.

okay to get technical this is what I found on Sultanas, Currants and Raisins.

Sultanas belong to the grapevine family (Vitaceae) and are native to the Caspian Sea. Currants, sultanas and raisins, including those still on the bunch, are known collectively as "raisins. The difference between these three dried fruits is explained below:

Sultanas: seedless, large-berried and light yellow. Larger than currants and smaller than raisins.
Currants: seedless, small-berried, purple/black color. Their name derives from the Greek city of Corinth.
Raisins on the bunch: seeded, large-berried, generally with stalk.

Now after all that, let's just say they are the same bloody thing! :lol2:

It felt really really really weird having no internet for nine days. At first I felt kinda lost and then it felt somewhat liberating (meaning no guilt over what I was missing because I had no choice)... but I've really missed seeing everyone's smiling faces. :)
