I thought I'd start a public journal to attract more moms of special needs kids to the board. I am pretty crappy at keeping my regular journal (see the ADD part?) but I'll give it a shot.

My actual name is Stacey and I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I have lived here all of my life except a brief stay in MA to be born and a year in OH for college. I am 37 (a few more months) and I am married to Scott since May of 1998. We have two sons, Saxon (almost 5) and Flynn(almost 2). When I was pg with Saxon I looked online for support through the pregnancy and ended up at a now defunct site UB. I was in a pregnancy group with many of the current members of this board. Now our babies are all turning 5!:faint:

From my journal
So Saxon had his 2 yr appointment today (A little late)

So at 25 months 12 days he is

34 lbs 10 oz 97%ile
37 3/4 inches 100%ile
52 cm head size 100%ile

He is the size of an average 3 yr old.

Sadly he is delayed in his speech. The ped said to try to get him in some group with other kids so he can interact with them. He said to wait until the end of August to call a EI number that he gave me. We are also letting him get away without talking because we know what he wants without making him tell us. So we have to start witholding stuff he wants until he uses the word for it. Let me just say the first night of this ended SAxon 1 Mom and Dad 0.

So Saxon's evaluation was yesterday. There was a speech therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, a special ed preschool teacher, His teacher from his class, myself and my mom(his daycareprovider). He had fun at first but then seemed to shut down a little from all the strangers. He wasn't too cooperative though he did do some of the tasks he was asked to do. I also had to fill out a lot of questionaires about what he understands and says as well as a sensory disorder checklist. I guess they will score him based on both the eval and the paperwork. I know he is not all that bad off but it is still hard to know he is not completely normal. :(
Today he starts a new class that is focused on kids with speech delays. I am going to it with him but my mom will take him since I work full time. I hope there are more kids on the same level as he is. I know a lot of the kids will have other disabilities and I don't know how he will respond. We'll see.

Saxon has a speech delay and so we started the process of getting him some help. When they evaluated him the first time they decided to refer him to another program which evaluates other potential issues. I asked why they were looking at this and they said they saw some potential "sensory issues" with him as well. So we had him evaluated and he was not very cooperative because he had an audience and he was among strangers. But they also went by some questionaires I had filled out. So along with his speech delay he does have sensory integration issues. She even went as far as to say that he may be on the low end ot the autism specrtum. We can have him tested for this. I am not totally convinced they are right. I think what I want to do is take advantage of the services they will provide and then they can see him in action. I hope they will find that they were wrong. But he does have problems and I am glad they will be working with him. It does sound like a lot of work for him though, I hope it isn't too much. I just had the evaluation dropped off and talked to her a little. Next week we will go over it and I can protest things in it if I want. I can also find out more about what we need to do for him.

So not the greatest news but it I wouldn't trade my boy for any other. He is hilarious and cute and smart. It is hard though too. :(

We met with them today and now SAxon has the label of Early Childhood Developmental Delayed. They are reccomending he go to the special preschool 4X/week 1.5 hours /day. I am not ready to do that much yet so am only going to do 2X week and keep him in the current classes he is in. When they are finished for the session I may move him to 4x. I am reluctant to move him from his one class because he likes it a lot. I am still pretty confused. On top of it I bawled during the meeting. nice.

April, 7 2005-Saxon is weird because he can read which is advanced but then if people come over to our house instead of saying Hi he willl recite the ABC's or say A is for apple etc. That is why he's in the special school. :) He's getting better on that front though from them working with him at school.

Here he was almost 3. He isn't as much into letters and will talk more to people. But now he wants to talk about Thomas the train to everyone and will "script" from the videos. But still he is much more engaged with people. I belong to a Hyperlexia email group even though his obsession with letters has waned recently.

I can't find the post where he was dxed as Autism Spectrum Disorder but he was in 2006. I feel lucky that his case isn't very severe and he will probably be sent to a regular Kindergarten class at our home school. :yippee:

WEll that is the intro. What do we do about photos here? since the general public can't see them?:dunno:

We met with Saxon's teacher today, she took time out of her weekend to meet with us at our house since we both work Full Time! ( I love her!) She is really convinced that the regular kindergarten is the place for him with some support but will be meeting with teachers and the sped. director to see what we can get.

She is concerned about his anxiety. :( He is very worried about other kids if they cry or throw fits at school. (which is daily) So it interferes with him participating etc. She brought up talking to a Psychiatrist about it and maybe some meds. I actually have thought about this myself because it is so hard for him to not be anxious. He misses out on a lot. :( So I am going to make some calls tomorrow. :dunno: WE'll see.

Then we went out side. It was a balmy 57f. Saxon rode his pedal car from xmas and his bike that hw avoided like the plague ast summer. :aok: Got right on and boom!:bike: We took a walk and he rode the pedal car for a pretty long walk. :)

That's great that Saxon will likely be placed in a regular kindergarten class!

Cameron and Saxon sound so much alike. Cam is also going to a regular kindergarden, but will still be pulled out for his speech, physical and occupational therapy.

Hope that you can figure out a way to help Saxon with his anxiety.

:wavey: Hi ladies! Maybe we should start a kids with special needs journal instead of this one? I am lame at keeping up with posting.

I will keep trying though. :)
