View Full Version : How much would you get rid of in a yard sale?

Ok so I am trying to pack and minimize the amount of stuff I take with me when I move out of the house. My goal is to have a HUGE yard sale NEXT Saturday (St Patrick's Day)

So far I know I am selling:
~ my entire bedding set (minus the sheets) but it also includes the window treatments, matching decorative towels and bathroom stuff (tissue box cover)
~ dining room furniture (actually I will be selling this to a friend so I can use it until moving day if need be)
~ TONS of kitchen stuff that I just don't use
~ toys galore
~ clothes galore
~ crib (actually will be giving that to a girl in need)

Really, I am questioning myself on selling my kitchen table and chairs as well as my living room furniture (sofa, love seat, chair and ottoman) Here is my thing ~ I hate to pay for storage on thing(s) that I don't LOVE and really could stand to be replaced. My kitchen table for 1), it is getting old (6+ years) and starting to show some wear and tear. (um hello 3 kids that use it as an activity table, plus 3 meals a day for 6 years???) 2) My living room furniture (8 years) which is leather, but it has a tear in it (on a corner, but is fixible), shows LOTS of wear and tear and honestly I haven't ever love it *he* did. (it isn't that comfortable and is very bland)

Anyway, quite honestly the only furniture I really care about in the entire house is my bedroom suit and the bunk beds, nothing else really matters. Of course I will keep my dishes and pots and pans, crock pot, blender and clothes (mine and kids), some toys as well as a few other *minor* things, but I just don't want or NEED or have the space to keep everything.

So what would you do? If you would sell it, how much would you sell it for?

My view on a tag sale is to price things to sell, not to make tons of money because I don't want to have to pack them up and haul them to goodwill, I'd rather sell them!

Leather furniture: If you really want it to go, sell the chair for $25-50, loveseat from $50-100, maybe less depending on the market (and how badly you want to be rid of it and the wear that it shows).

Bedding: $20 for the whole set or $5 a piece? Again, I don't know how nice of a set it is, if it was a $300 set and it is in good condition, maybe $40 for the set.

Toys: depending on size and condition $1-5, put some toys into sets (ie a whole bunch of little people things together) and sell a bunch off.

Kitchen things: utensils (tongs, spatulas, etc...) $1 each. Kitchen electrics $5-10 a piece.

Selling the kitchen table to your friend, I don't know $50-75 depending on the wear. :dunno:

Much like organizing and throwing things out it is best to be unemotional when it comes to pricing things. I priced my tagsale really low (I sold a computer set up for $75 and it was gone within 10 minutes of "opening") because I didn't want the stuff anymore, nor did I want to deal with putting it away to sell again.

Good luck!!!!

I'd try selling the furniture on craigslist or someplace like that. I think you'd get more than you would at a yard sale. And if you're not having the sale until next weekend, you could list them for the week and put them in the sale if the don't sell.

Do you have anyone (even a few people) that can store the stuff (table, LR furniture)for you? I know you don't love it, but what if you get an apartment in 6 months? New living room furniture is going to cost you, at a minimum, $1,500. And a kitchen table will probably run at least another $500. Do you forsee yourself having that money available? If so, then sell. If not, then I'd try to find a way to store it for free. Even if you don't love it, later on, when you have more money coming in, you can put it up on Craigslist to get rid of it.

I agree with Karri, it all depends on whether you will be able to replace these items... You still need a table, even it's beat up. Same with LR furniture... if you can't replace them right away, try to find someplace to store them for free and when you know you can replace the items, throw them on Craigslist.

I agree with Karri. When I went thru my divorce, I left him 98% of the furniture because I didn't have anywhere to put it and thought I didn't need it. It really sucked when i did finally get a place.
