Anyone do this/has done it in the past?

I'm trying and trying and trying to teach Mia to sign but it's like she just doesn't have any interest at all. She picked up on pat-a-cake, roll it (from pat-a-cake), hi-5, etc right away but signing... nope! She'll do the sign for "milk" when we are no where NEAR a bottle and has only done it a couple of times (only once while asking for the bottle).

Any suggesstions?

Just keep at it. It takes awhile for them to get it, and when they do, they usually just take off.

Yup - just keep at it. If you're diligent, one day, she'll just regurgitate it.

I agree with the others. I did signs for Anya for months, and then within a week she "got" three of them.

Jo, keep at it! Julia was about 11-ish months old when she got her first sign (more). When she put two and two together that signing "more" got her MORE and signing "milk" got her MILK...her signs EXPLODED!! She could easily add a new sign every day or so, I think we got up to 75/100 signs in all. Stick with it...it will pay off in SPADES!!

Thanks girls!!!

Funny story... I could smell a not-so-pleasant odor coming from my DD :giggle: so I took her upstairs to change her diaper and get her ready for her bath. I got her stripped down to her onsie and the diaper and all of a sudden she started signing "milk"!!!!!!!!! SO, I scooped her up and ran out into the kitchen and handed her a bottle and she kept signing milk. I made her a bottle - the whole time she's finding this whole thing VERY funny because mommy is trying to make a bottle in a hurry - but I got it made, held the bottle in front of her and signed and said "milk" and she signed it back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I THINK SHE GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jeremy also just informed me that last night as he was giving her her bedtime bottle, she was lying there holding the bottle and drinking with one hand and signing "milk" with the other!!!!!!!!!!!! :woo:

That's how Jacob started doing it. He started doing the sign while doing the action. I agree that it's persistence then once she gets it, then it explodes. Jacob also got it around the 10/11month mark. He is only 17 months now and starting to develope words but he still does the sign even if he says the word. It's just an amazing feeling to understand what your baby needs :aok: Keep up the great work.

:cheer: Go, Mia!

That's excellent. It's so cute to see the little baby hand signing "milk" while drinking.

Yay, Mia!

I didn't start signing to Daniel until after his 1st birthday and he picked them up really fast. Within 2-3 days of introducing a new sign, he can do it. Now he can do about 17 signs at 16 months.

SHE DID IT AGAIN THIS MORNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rahrah:

I was putting on her shoes and socks so I gave her the rest of her bottle (she's in this little habit now where she'll only drink part of her bottle, then will want to play and then wants to finish her bottle about 1/2 hr later). So, I was putting her little socks on and I looked up at her (I always talk to her while getting her dressed and tell her/explain to her what I'm doing) and when I looked up she was holding the bottle and drinking with one hand and the other little hand was just going to TOWN with the "milk" sign!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :giggle:
