View Full Version : Alyssa and Tylor's rooms

We are switching Alyssa and Tylor's rooms around. Tylor will get the smaller room and Alyssa the larger. For one Tylor wants to change and the other reason is that Alyssa just has to much stuff for the room she is in. I just can't fit it all and I also have the porta crib in that room for the children I watch.

Her current room is 10x13 and Tylor's room is 15x18 (Rather large!) Tylor's current closet is so small that I can't stand in it and close the door and Alyssa's room doesn't have one.

So..we are switching them and repainting them.

So Alyssa's room
She wants Poka dots.
Pink, Blue, White and purple (I am thinking very light shades of these..almost pastel) - at least that is what I think she means

I don't know how to incorporate that without scaring myself and anyone else  I was thinking different sizes and maybe only part of the wall or several walls but not all..

SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!!!!

Tylor's room
Dan wants to paint it so that when he comes home from college he won't say "Wow...I was a dork" But other then that we have no idea's...Any suggestions would be great!!!

Jayne, have you seen the new Pampered Chef bowl with the poka dots on with the white background? You could try to do it like that. Let me see if I can grab a pic from the site.

https://www.pamperedchef.com/graphics/products_200/1977_200.jpg maybe do a border or something with them but lighter of course like you said. Or wouldn't that work? Were you going to do the whole entire room with dots?

ETA: shoot I over looked the word white in there. I'm not sure of the main background color now.

Tylor..... You tell him I think he's a dork right now! :awink:

I like the polka dot idea. :) I don't have any suggestions for you....just curious to see how it all works out!

Tabitha, I am not sure yet of a main background color. Alyssa wants it to be Yellow but I am afraid it will be to many colors going on.

See I am really not all that creative. I can copy anything but ask me to come up with it on my own and I am at a loss and well..Alyssa has voiced this opinion and now I feel I should at least try

Hmmmm..... maybe do a very pale yellow with the dots on and see how that turns out. Is anyone good with photo shop? maybe you can get someone if you don't know how because I don't  do a sktech up and see how it turns out first before you paint her wall and maybe that will help you decide better on color wise too?

gulp!

How about just painting her room the solid yellow color and then getting polka-dot curtains??? and then you could just accent her bedding with the other colors she likes... circular pillows in those colors???

Some jumping off points for you (both from PBK):

This is just to give you the idea of a design/colors on yellow walls.http://www.potterybarnkids.com/pkimgs/ab/images/products/200707/0003/img8l.jpg

Just found these curtains at Target.com. It's got your colors but it very understated so as not to over-power but yet very girly and SO cute!!!!

I like how Jen painted Kalyssa's room... http://www.onceuponalife.com/forums/showpost.php?p=691523&postcount=7

It's the third picture, and actually the lighting isn't right in the pic. The room is so cute. That pic will give you the general idea though.

One more thing...

I just saw these on Urban Outfitters so they are really expensive, but I think you can buy sheets of decals in different colors and then cut out your own circles. This gives you the option of putting the colored dots up on your walls and then, maybe in a few years, you can just peel them off again. I can't seem to put my finger on the kind of removable adhesive sheets right now but I know that product is out there. I'm pretty sure I've seen it on HGTV at some point... :giggle:

I have to vote for something along these lines. Brookelyn has that same PB set, but hers is the 'green' base and not pink, but we're still painting her room that way. The top will be light yellow with a decoration similar to that, then chair rail molding and then light pink bellow that.

It will look cute whatever you do I'm sure Jayne!! I do like the curtains too from Target with the ribbons on them.

I know this is a dress but somehow this colour scehme popped into my head when you said that Alyssa wanted a yellow background.

What about a soft yellow on the walls and incorporate the coloured polka dots into the the accessories. We use a soft yellow for Emma's room. Her room is with butterflies though.

Emma's second set of sheets is white with pink polka dots. I got it at Linens-n-things but can't find a picture online.

Still looking. :)

What stinks is she has all Tinkerbell stuff. Her bedding, her over bed net thing, her lamp..even the wall stick ons..I hate loosing that. I was hopeing to use colors from her bedding a bit. Just not sure I can.

You could paint the walls a ligt yellow and use purple polka dots to match her Tinker Bell bedding.

Jayne

She doesn't have the purple set. Hers is blue...

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000AXU28C.16._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS260_.jpg
She loves it but I told her she may not be able to use it if we do her room as she likes. I just don't know what to do yet.

My girlfriend did this in her baby's room and it turned out cute.

I vote for doing the yellow in Alyssa's room, then doing larger blue/green (or whatever that color is in her bedding) dots. But not too many. :)

I think you could do dots that were the blue and green from her bedding.

I think that's the only way that you could do it with using the Tinkerbell comforter w/o walking into the room and going "woah".
Keep in mind that with the colors you use on the wall, she's likely not going to have that tinkerbell comforter forever. So......

I vote for the pic that Lynn posted. You could do something like that with the colors from her Tinkerbell stuff!

Very true and that is why I was thinking that her colors might be ok. I could actually turn her comforter over. It is a yellow on the other side. She would still see Tinkerbell when she was in it

And I really like the idea of just doing them around the top of the room! She of course is not in the mood to come look

It looks like there are three different size circles there right? I wonder if they have a stencil for that or if I will have to make one? hmm...

OH..so anyone have any idea's on Ty's room?

Love the idea of something like Lynn posted. :)

What does Tylor like? What colours, theme etc?

Jayne
February 21st, 2007, 01:49 PM
He likes ohio state so that would be scarlet, grey and Black but I am not sure I would go that route with a room. He loves soccer, green's and blues I just don't know  I am a lot of help. Sad that we can't come up with something. Tylor says anything is fine. He is such a no fuss kid but I want something special for him :dunno:

Lynn

Jayne, my friend used a paint can lid, a roll of blue painters tape (and something I can't remember) for her stencils.

I painted a polka-dot table, chairs, and shelf and found a set of sponge stamps to do it with. It has 3 different sized stamps.
Otherwise, I reccommend Debbie Travis's books. She has one on kids rooms (http://www.amazon.com/Debbie-Travis-Painted-House-Rooms/dp/0609805517/sr=1-1/qid=1172084852/ref=sr_1_1/102-8210502-3344955?ie=UTF8&s=books) and it will explain step-by-step how to do different, cool techniques. Most libraries carry them.

For Tylor, if you want to keep it classic, I would look at some catalogues and ask him what he likes. Paint the walls a basic color that goes w/ what he likes (like a smoky blue or a beige) and then accessorize w/ stuff. If he really wants buckeyes, you could do the walls in a nice, pale grey and then just get him some OSU stuff. That way, it wouldn't be obnoxious.

So we let Tylor go to town. He picked the paint, his bedding and he helped us put it all together. I am so proud of how it came out. It looks like such a grown up room.

We still want to find some shelves to hang so we can have his Stereo speakers on them and some other things to put around and make it more him! OH..and he doesn't usually have his TV on while he is doing his homework. Alyssa walked in while I was taking pictures and turned it on..We turned it right back off. He also doesn't usually have a monitor in his room but while I am doing Alyssa's room we have to put the baby in Tylor's room to sleep (She doesn't move yet) so I set it up in there for now.

Can't wait to see pics of Alyssa's room!

We are still in the process of clearing out and cleaning out Tylor's old room. Poor Alyssa is on Tylor's floor for now  Tylor just had so many toys and it is time to realize that he is going to be 12 and no longer needs them. So we have emptied the toy box and switched it out with Alyssa's and boxed up some books that he no longer reads. I am going to donate a bunch to the church because they are having a garage sale this weekend and can use the stuff. I just can't wait to have her in there but we have a long road ahead. We have to remove wall paper..YUCK.

Any more thoughts on Ayssa's polka dot rooms. I saw a room in Parents Magazine last month with polka dots and thought of your thread. :) They had stick on polka dot wallies. It said they were from Lowes.
