We finally fixed David's seat on his bike. He has training wheels on and while riding around the neighborhood dh realized that he wrecked all the time. So when they got home he took them off. David jumped on the bike and took off! No problems at all!!! He actually rides better with them off than on. So I guess I am wondering. Who else's child is riding their bike without training wheels? How long have they been at it???

Not yet - Caroline is interested in the idea, but I think she's clumsy enough walking (I swear this kid trips over the pattern in the linoleum!) so I'd be afraid to turn her loose on a training-wheel-less bike for picturing broken teeth and the like.

I think Janelle is still years away from being able to ride without training wheels! She is 4 1/2. Kincaid still hasn't figured out the concept of pedaling, he'll be 3 in march.

Eliot has my sense of balance, poor child, so even though we have tried it some he hasn't been able to figure it out.
We're planning on taking him out to practice a lot as soon as it warms up a bit more out there... and I found his protective gloves (from when he got a little scooter), that should help b/c last time he quit trying after he fell & scratched the palm of his hand on the pavement.

that's awesome, melissa! go david!

we plan on setting aidan's training wheels to an uneven level as soon as the snow melts. so we'll see how he handles it. he's a bit of a...wuss :shuffle: when it comes to his bike :shuffle:

Wow!!! That's amazing Melissa.

We're pretty far away from that, Katie's riding like a fiend with the training wheels on. She's up to 7mph :hehe:

Go Katie!! Wow 7mph!! That's fast. I have to chuckle because as David is hauling major butt down the sidewalk he gets to me and goes "Did you see how fast I was going? It was like 100 miles an hour"! I was like yeah..you were going pretty fast..:giggle: He was probably going 7mph as well. Kids...you just gotta love 'em!!!

We aren't using training wheels - we'll see how it goes. We're going straight for a bike with no training wheels. We'll work on it in the summer. Too much snow right now!

Melissa, that's great!!

All of Addison's classmates can ride w/o training wheels. It seems more common here to skip the training wheels altogether. (and they're called stabilizers here :) ) I've been lazy in removing them but once she starts riding this year, they're coming off. We might get new bikes anyway.

:rahrah: Go David!!!

Aiden seems to be ready, Tony talks about taking off the wheels all the time but hasn't done it yet. It definatly is planned, I will let you know how we go. (he is 4.9yrs)

Now I'm looking at new bikes... what size is the best for 4/5 year olds?

I think the bike we have for David is the 12" one.

Really, Melissa? When we got Aidan's bike at age 3, he was too big for a 12".

At age 3, we got him a 14". His new (used) bike that he gets this spring is 16".

Alyssa's I believe is a 16" bike. Tylors is something like a 20"

That said..Alyssa just got her first bike for her birthday this year after spending the summer with her on Tylor's old one. That Christmas Birthday really threw us and we just didn't know when to get the bike. She loves it so hoipefully we really get her going this summer.

Tylor hates the outdoors. He isn't the kind of kid to go out and play at all and so getting him out has been hard. He got some really cool wheels for his bike this year. They are tractor tires and he is finally getting the hang on it. I hope to get family bike riding going this summer and start to love the outdoors more.

Way go to David :cheer:

Matthew has a 16" bike and does really well with it. I haven't even thought about taking the training wheels off yet  I think he'd have some balance issues at this point. We may try this summer. It can't hurt - we'll just have lots of bandaids handy :giggle:

I have no clue what size the kids bikes are, all I can tell you is Janelle's is a princess bike and Kincaid's looks like a dirt bike. My mom bought both of them.

I'm pretty sure ours is a 16" bike. We got it for Carter for Christmas. He'll be 5 in March and is very tall.

I know this is an old thread, but I'll add to it anyways!

Rory has been riding without training wheels at her Dad's since last summer. She got a new (16") bike this weekend, and there are no training wheels on it. It's frightening how fast she goes! She does great without the training wheels! :woo: She loves it though.

I took Aidan's wheels off today and he was off like a flash! He can't figure out how to start up on his own yet, but riding was no issue. :aok:

Colin wanted his off too and I did remove them, but it didn't work right away and I was heading out with no time to spend to teach him. :( I'll try this weekend and see if we can get him going w/out the training wheels too.
