We're using the refrigerator that came with out house. It's not new but I don't know how old it is. I'd bet it's about 15 years old.

How long does a normal refrigerator last?
How can I tell if it's starting to go bad?

Things are starting to freeze if I put them in the back. Lettuce and sour cream and butter have all frozen if they were on the top shelf of the refrigerator. Is this a sign that the refrigerator is going bad?

It's hard to say. It could be that you just have it turned up too cold. Is it getting louder or making funny noises or anything like that?

No, it's not making noises or getting louder.

I keep adjusting it... I think last month I turned it up a little because things weren't cold enough. And then things started freezing so I just turned it down. The thermometer I have in there said it was 39-40°F on the second shelf in the back last night. That's about right, I think...

We have this problem too. We were told it had something to do with airflow but I have no idea how to fix it as no matter what we try, we have this problem. It's a major pain as we've wasted so much produce with this problem

Brooke, have you tried to vacuum the coils and underneath? Maybe cleaning it will help it run better. :dunno:

Is it leaking water anywhere? I'll have to ask my husband, he builds/repairs refrigerators for Whirlpool...

In our last place, we used the fridge that came with it when we bought the condo. We lived there for over two years and had the same problem with stuff in the back of the fridge freezing. We never figured out why it happened, but the fridge lasted the whole time we were there--and we left the fridge there when we moved. :dunno:

I don't think that it is going bad because I am having the same problem and we bought our fridge when we bought our house about 15 months ago. I have no idea how to fix it but I know that whenever I put produce in the bottom drawer it freezes.
