We just bought a house, and the kitchen/dining room is the area that needs the most help. We're planning on painting the cupboards white, to brighten it up a bit, since the kitchen area is so small. And I'm wanting to paint the walls in a deep red for the entire area. With silver for the cupboard handles and I'm hoping to find a new light fixture, even though the one that is in there isn't *that* bad, I'd like everything to match, eventually  And we're going to lay pergo in the kitchen ASAP, and eventually in the dining area...(and the kitchen table is just a temporary solution..we're getting a new one soon  )
Here are some pictures of the kitchen...As far as the little laundry area, those ugly curtains will be coming down, and I have louvered doors to put on there.

I think white cupboards will look great--that was my first thought when I saw your cabinets. That will really brighten everything up. And, we have that EXACT light fixture in our formal dining room...and I agree with your assessment...it isn't THAT bad...but I want to change it too.
Since you plan on putting louvered doors on the laundry area, what about doing shutters (or just shutters on the lower half) of the window instead of those cafe curtains?

I like the shutter idea too. What about finding a rug you like? I think I have one in my post decorating thread below that might work with your colors. Painting the cabinets is a great idea to brighten it up. If you don't want to re-paint everything, you could paint red on the soffit, the backsplash and maybe the lower half of the walls and put up a white chair rail. That would connect the white from your cabinets around the rest of the kitchen.

The shutter idea is great. Try to work with the colours to make it look bigger and brighter. The cabinets white but add a warm colour (yellow, orange, red) to make it more spacious...

Chris, I found some really cool cabinet door handles in the Thomasville collection at Home Depot. All of our stuff is chrome, so we are focusing on silver, too. I even found some that might be really cool in your kitchen. They're chrome with a white and yellowish marble piece on them. Hard to explain, but they were gorgeous. So, it's definitely worth a trip down there to check things out. The white cabinetry is going to make a WORLD of difference, too. I think it's going to look fantastic when you get it all done!
