View Full Version : Window shop and dream, or not see it at all till the money is in the bank?

Tony wants to go house hunting today in the suburb of our dreams, we can't afford to do it till the kids are in school (or atleast the first 2 anyway) so that is 2 years away.

I personally don't want to because I KNOW we can't buy it now and it will make me wistful and want it now when we just can't do it.

He wants to do it so he can dream and plan for the future.

Are you more like me or Tony?

Do you like to window shop and dream about what you could buy if you had the money or would you rather wait till you know you have the money so you can buy it when you see it?

I'm more like you, Deb. I'm more prone to make something fit if I want it than to wait until it fits naturally

I'd rather not even look if I can't afford it.

Darren is drooling over a big screen TV that costs more than we have in our savings account and I don't even want to talk about them or look at them because I know we can't get one. Drives me nuts!

I said to him that I know with houses it's nice to see what you can buy for the money so we have an idea of what we can afford and live in, but 2 years is a long time in the real estate market. It would be pointless in my eyes, and way too tempting to do something we can't afford

I'm the same as you, Deb. No point in getting all wistful about a house you're not going to buy. It just makes me feel less satisfied with the house I'm in if I do that. Even if I wasn't unhappy with our house, it just starts to make it feel like we're "settling," you know?

I'm the same. If I went looking at my dream house now it would just make me unhappy with where I am.

I am like Tony, I like to window shop even though I know we won't be buying a house for several years. There are alot of lottery homes near my Parent's house and I like to walk down and check them out. I don't feel upset because I can't have it now, I just enjoy looking, not that we'll ever have a lottery home, but you know what I'm saying

I am totally like Tony.... Actually I made my husband even go through open houses until we finally couldn't stand it anymore and found away to make it happen.

It would never occur to me to go looking at houses unless we were actually buying one. Doesn't seem to be a point to me :dunno:

David is the dreamer. He'll go look at houses, cars, boats etc.

I pay the bills. I KNOW it's pointless

Nope. Can't do it. Why would I do that to myself? I'd rather go look at open houses similar to mine to get ideas for how to spruce up my own home.

I think it depends on what we're window shopping for. I love looking at houses, especially when I can take some of the ideas and use in our own home. I don't like just looking for clothes or whatever, because it's always an "unnecessary" purchase and I'd feel guilty about actually buying something.

Firstly, what is he thinking going to look at dream houses when he's supposed to be in the dog house?!!

If Jim told me today that we were going to house hunt I'd have my coat on in a second ... he can figure out how to pay for it after I've fallen in love with it

I'd go.. and take pictures! I'd put the pictures up on the fridge and on the mirrors in the bathroom or on closet doors.. That's what we do. If you see it and speak it, you're going to make it happen!! We've accomplished tons of different goals by doing things like that!

Yeah well the only way it's going to happen is if I go back to work fulltime and I am NOT doing that while the kids are under school age, you can't squeeze blood out of a stone. It ain't happening anytime soon so I just don't see the point.

Now if we were to go and look at mansions that we could never afford unless we won lotto or our business totally takes off, I would do that just out of the "dream" factor but I know it won't ever happen so it would be just a fun day out looking how the rich live. But to look at something I know we can do but not for a few more years it would be TORTURE!

But I am also not a window browser when we go shopping I hate just wandering around staring at things when I can't afford them, Tony can spend all day looking at stuff :dunno:

I am with Cami. It depends on what it is. I don't mind window shopping for furniture and smaller things. But, I would never do it for houses or cars.

Did I just fall asleep and wake up in some sort of life coaching seminar?

Ditto here  I'm more like Tony I guess...I like to look and see what is out there and how much it costs etc...We looked a few years back at model homes and we were just in this house for less than a year.. I would go in a heartbeat :)

Sorry.. didn't mean to sound 'life coachy' that's just the way we try and think around here.. positive! It actually works really well for us!

It depends on what "it" is. I am a researcher and planner. I've been researching digital camera for at least 6 months now. I've been lusting after a few for oh, about two years.

A house though, I'd wait until I was more ready to purchase. It isn't like a car or camera, you never know what the market will look like until you are ready.

I agree that positive thinking is great :aok:, but there is reality to deal with too. I KNOW we are going to do this, but it is not going to happen today. No amount of photo's posted around my house or positive thinking is going to make this situation change till the kids are in school, for now I am happy to be where we are because it suits our situation, when the kids are in school and I am happier to either put more of my efforts into my business or go back to work full time then we can acheive our dream.

So I guess my original question of: If you know you can't have it, would you still go window shopping? still stands.
