Anyone have a bottom freezer on their fridge?

I'm contemplating getting one and I've seen 2 versions.

1) The bottom has a pull out drawer
2) The bottom has a swinging door with a pull out basket

Which do you have and do you like it?
Any problems?

I saw the one with the pull out drawer and I thought it might get in the way.

A LOOOONG time ago my parents had the kind with the door and pull out tray. I love my side by side, but I'd choose that kind over the drawer kind.

A house we rented once had a bottom freezer. It was a pull-out drawer one. It was very handy really. I think a door with a pull out basket sounds like it would be more of a pain.

Lette, aren't you fairly tall? I'm thinking a bottom freezer would be a pain for those of us who are on the tall side, if only because I tend to keep heavier things in my freezer than in my produce drawers (which are currently at the bottom of my fridge.) I guess, though, it's really because I'd rather have better access to my icecream than my veggies...

Anyway, I think if I had the choice, the drawer seems like it would be easier to use. :)

I have had a bottom mount freezer for about 15 years. Love it. Mine is a door, and wish it was a drawer. With the drawer (which my friends and family have) it is so much easier to access, and things don't fall out!

Bottom mount freezzers are much more convenient than top mount one. You get in the refirgerator 20 times a day, and only get in the freezer a couple time a day. So, why not have the refrigerator at eye level? Works best.

The downfall, is that the freezer is small. Not smaller than top mount freezers, but smaller than side by side refrigerators. We have outgrown ours (the whole thing is only 19cf). Our freezer is packed to capacity, literally. But, we are also in the midst of a total kitchen remodel (gutted to the studs) and are putting in a large side by side which will triple our freezer space. Can't wait!

 I'm 5'6" Does that count as tall?

I'm now leaning towards the drawer type (thanks LeighAnn) and the freezer won't be used to store too too much since it will be at our shore place. So mostly ice cream and frozen margaritas.

My parents and my sister recently bought new fridges with the freezer on the bottom with the pull-out drawer. They LOVE it! I would personally also prefer that over a swinging door freezer.

Okay.. I LOVE my top mount REFRIGERATOR... but I HATE my freezer at the bottom. It is a pull out drawer with sliding basket mechanism and I absolutely hate it. It doesn't hold a heck of a lot. No use in shopping at Costco, unless you have aseparate chest freezer. I cannot get anything in it... If I need something that's on the bottom of the basket, I have to pull everything out and reorganize it again so that the top sliding basket will fit properly and the drawer will close properly. It's such a PITA I cannot rant enough!!! Finally, we bought a chest freezer to help us out. Now we're better off, and I like the system again.

So, to sum up. If you have a chest freezer to hold the majority of your frozen foods, go for this bottom mount freezer system. It's a wonderful fridge :) The veggies and fruit drawers are at arms reach :) If you don't have a chest freezer, be prepared for a lot of squishing and rearranging every time you access the freezer.

If you do go for the bottom mount freezer, one thing when you're deciding about the swing door vs drawer.. where is your fridge placed? If you open the swing door, will it be able to open more than 90 degrees so that you can pull out the baskets? If there is a wall on the hinged side it may hinder the width of your door opening, and you may not be able to access the inside of the freezer very well. (I'm not sure if that was clear or not)

Andrea hit the nail on the head - if we didn't have a stand alone freezer, I would regret having purchased a fridge with the freezer on the bottom (with the pull out drawers). I can never find anything and it barely holds a pint of ice cream.

I love my bottom mount freezer. I'm in the fridge all the time and in the freezer maybe once a day so it makes more sense to have the fridge at eye level. We have one with a swinging door and a pull out basket. Works fine for me, but we have 2 fridges (the people we bought the house from left their fridge). So we have that fridge running for beer and soda and use that freezer too for longer term storage and ackward shaped stuff like pizzas.
I don't like the side by side units at all, so we will be getting another bottom mount unit if this one ever dies.

I have a bottom freezer with the drawer with pullout baskets in the drawer.

I love it and I cram a LOT of food in there and DO shop at Costco/Sams. I think it's hugely convenient. I think I'd run out of space in our freezer just as quickly as I'd run out of space in a side-by-side model or top freezer. So if you buy a lot of bulky foods at Sams/Costo type warehouse stores you'd probably want an additional freezer no matter WHAT kind of fridge/freezer combo you have in the house.
