Novel Made Entirely Of Text Messages

POSTED: 9:11 am CST January 25, 2007
HELSINKI, Finaland -- A novel whose narrative consists entirely of mobile phone text messages has been published in Finland."The Last Messages" tells the story of a fictitious information-technology executive in Finland who resigns from his job and travels throughout Europe and India, keeping in touch with his friends and relatives only through text messages. His messages, and the replies -- roughly 1,000 altogether -- are listed in chronological order in the 332-page novel written by Finnish author Hannu Luntiala. The texts are rife with grammatical errors and abbreviations commonly used in regular SMS traffic."I believe that, at the end of the day, a text message may reveal much more about a person than you would initially think," said Luntiala, who also is head of a company that keeps databases on people living in Finland.Sari Havukainen, spokeswoman at Finnish publishing house Tammi, said the company is considering translating the book into other languages. The taciturn Finns, keen on all mobile gadgets, have wholeheartedly accepted text messages as a tool to communicate even in most private matters. Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen recently made tabloid front pages after reportedly having broken up with his girlfriend with a text.Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press (http://www.4029tv.com/news/2455821/detail.html). I read a book of emails once, and it was really, really good. (Dear Stranger, Dearest Friend (http://www.amazon.com/Dear-Stranger-Dearest-Friend-Novel/dp/0380814781/sr=8-1/qid=1169749879/ref=sr_1_1/104-0842963-2529544?ie=UTF8&s=books)) And I want to say I heard of another book that was emails and TXTs, but I can't remember what it was.

But I think that TXT messages would be headache inducing after a while.

I just got one that was all letters to people, but I agree that text messages might be difficult to read as a whole novel. I text a lot, but I don't generally use the abbreviations. I feel too juvenile doing that. I think all the middle school notes with BFF, LYLAS, etc did me in with that. Yet, somehow using abbreviations online is different.

I tend to use full words for text too but only because I find using the dictionary the quickest way to text. But I have no problems reading abbrev. text, I am even fluent in drunk text :giggle:

I think the book sounds interesting, I don't know if it would get old really fast though :dunno:
