View Full Version : How long did your baby wear size 0-3 months?

FH and I have started buying clothes here and there as we find them on sale. But everyone keeps telling us not to buy too many size 0-3 months clothes because babies tend to out grow them super quick. So far all we have are a few pairs of booties and knit caps, a 3 pack of onsies, and 2 sleepers all in 0-3 mos. And a few things in assorted larger sizes. My mom insists that I need little more than that to start off with because they only wear that size for a couple of weeks. That just doesn't sound right to me, so I ask you all, how long did your baby wear 0-3 month clothes? and how much more (if anything) do we need in this size? thanks in advance!

Matthew was a big baby (8lbs, 12oz at birth and grew rapidly from there) and he wore 0-3 for about 6 weeks. You definitely need more than you have, especially sleepers and onesies.

Caroline was almost as big as Matthew, and I agree with Nocona that you do need more. Even if you're not going out alot, you need enough to get you through diaper blow-outs/spit ups without having to do laundry every single day! So definitely stock up on sleepers - a big favorite of ours was what we called the "potato sacks", a nightgown with elastic around the bottom to keep their little feet/legs in. Easy for diaper changes, but no muss/no fuss dressing for hanging out at home. :)

Thanks Nocona and Anne! I knew I was on the right track, but everyone just kept insisting. I feel a tad gullible, being my first baby and all. It just seems like everyone (esp. my mom and FMIL) think they know everything about babies and I don't know anything at because this is my first. I need to start listening to my gut!
Thanks again!

Rebekah was tiny at birth - 6lb 4oz and 18" long. She wore 0-3 months stuff for about 4 months.
I'd definitely get more than what you have, especially thin cotton sleepers, since it will be hot in July but you'll probably be in air-conditioned places most of the time.

Madison was 6lbs 15 oz a birth and shes STILL wearing 0-3m clothes at 4 1/2 months old. Shes in mostly 3-6 for regular clothes but she still fits in 0-3m onesies and sleepers without stretching them. She will probably wear them until shes 5 months or maybe a little longer. You wont know until your baby is born what they will wear so dont listen to people when they say your baby will or will not need certain things. You will definitly need more than you have now even if you have a bigger baby. Madison may go through 2 sleepers in 2 hours from spitting up on them or dirty diapers. She has about 10 onesies, she doesnt wear them much but she has about 20 sleepers she pretty much lives in. Even though shes 14 lbs, most 0-3 sleepers go to 11lbs, she still fits in 0-3 comfortably.
It just seems like everyone (esp. my mom and FMIL) think they know everything about babies and I don't know anything at because this is my first. I need to start listening to my gut!
99% of mothers and MIL think they know better than moms. If you dont want to get into a big mess with them just smile and nod but do what your gut tells you anyway. Dont be afraid to tell them that things have changed over the years.

Aiden was 7lbs 5 oz at birth. He wore 0-3 for about two months. He's gone from 3-6 and is now growing into 6-9 month clothes. He's growing like a weed and is long and thin. I agree with Harmonie. Go with your gut...for you will not go wrong without it.

What you have might not even last through one day with a newborn. They spit up and poop on stuff a lot when they're young.
My kids were both 7lb 12oz when they were born.
Sierra wore 0-3month size stuff until she was about 3 months old
Sean I don't think even made it a month in them.
You never know.

jstauffer- that is exactly what I was thinking that I would need a good amount of basics in case of spit up/diaper issues. I don't want to wash clothes every single day.... but they kept telling me not to waste my money...
Thanks everyone! I knew what they were saying sounded way off... maybe they were thinking of newborn size clothes... I could see most babies outgrowing those quickly.... :dunno: Well, thanks again for reassuring me!

Katie was 10lbs 13oz when she was born and even she lasted more than a week in 0-3 month clothes! She wore 0-3 month outfits for two months and I've squeezed her into 0-3 month jammies for just over three months now. (She's long and lean though--not chubby, which might make a difference.)

tony was 9lbs 4oz and i can't remember how long he was in 0-3....possibly 2 months.
but, what no one has mentioned yet is BOYS PEE OUT THE DIAPER THE FIRST WEEKS! especially if you circumsize and are waiting for it to heal. i must have changed his outfit 5 times the first day he was home.
you really should load up on the onesies and like anne, i was also a big fan of the gowns for sleeping  they are hard to find though.

Both of my boys were big (8 lbs. 11 oz. and 9 lbs. 5 oz.)! I'll admit that I didn't buy too much in 0-3 months for them in actual clothing items. I would suggest investing in onsies and sleepers in this size because babies do tend to mess their clothes up alot. My boys probably stayed in 0-3 month for about 6 weeks.

Aidan will be 2 months on the 14th and he is still fitting quite well in his 0-3 months. He has, however, outgrown his newborn sleepers which are smaller than the 0-3's.....and the one preemie outfit he wore home from the hospital...forget it. He outgrew that in the first week I think. He was 7 lbs 15 oz at birth

Janelle wore 0-3 month clothes for 4 months, but she didn't grow into them till she was 2 1/2-3months old...so she wore them from 2 1/2 months till about 6 or 7 months.

aidan was 7lb 15ozs at birth and was in 0-3 for 3 months.
Norah & Elliott have been in 0-3 for 2.5 months now and I can see them lasting another 2-4 weeks in some of it.
ITA about the sleep sack thingeys Anne posted about. We love them. You can usually get them at Target and at Kohls. Carters makes them.

Jackson was tiny at birth and he wore 0-3 month clothes from about 1 month until 3 months. Before 1 month old he wore premie clothes - they said they fit up to 5 lbs, but they fit him until he was about 8 lbs. Even now at 4 1/2 months and 16 pounds, he fits into a few 0-3 things...
One thing that I learned is that you really don't need to stock up on everything before the baby is born. Before he was born, I wanted everything to be ready, but after he was here, I welcomed the opportunity to run out and get things. I would definitely buy more 0-3 month things than you have, but don't feel like you have to get everything ahead of time. Plus, my taste in baby clothes changed a bit when he was born. Before he was born I had bought him a bunch of "real clothes" like jeans, cargo pants and stuff, but I found that sleepers were much more practical and looked a lot better at the beginning. I would buy mostly sleepers and one-piece things in 0-3 months, and get more "real clothes" in 3-6 months or larger.

Micayla wore them until around 3 months. She was 7lbs 5 oz at birth but grew really fast and stayed pretty consistant in the 90%tile as far as height and weight goes. Melayna was 6lbs 8oz at birth and has always been tiny (20%). She's 8 months old and she's actually wearing a 0-3 month dress today. But I'd say she wore them regularly until she was 5 months old.

My DS was only 5 lbs 7 oz at birth, so he didn't even *start* wearing 0-3 clothes till he was about a month old. He's 2 months old now, and has 1 0-3 month sleeper he's grown out of, several that fit, and some that are still too big. I just love how the sizing of this stuff works.

Ha - wait until you discover that the feet of a 9-12 month sleeper are the same size as the feet of a 3-6 month romper, and you end up taking scissors to all their sleepers so their toes don't curl under! (yes, this happened to us) Do they really think baby's feet are the only part that DON'T grow???

Julian weighed 8 lb. 8 oz. when he was born, and wore size 0-3 months for about a month, maybe. They still fit him girthwise, but lengthwise he was way out of the small sizes in a hurry (he's always been off the charts as far as height and weight). Still, we used a lot of the basics - t-shirts, onesies, sleepers and gowns. I wouldn't buy too many of the cute outfits in 0-3 months, but you'd definitely want a good supply of the basics on hand. It's amazing how many clothes such a little person can go through in a day!

Hmm, now we are always complaining about how the feet on all of her sleepers are HUGE and she is always tripping over them, we thought they just assumed that all babies had monster feet!

Alex was almost exactly 7lbs at birth and also wore 0-3 month clothes for about 3 months. He was probably about a month old before most of his clothes would fit him reasonably well and once he hit 3 months old he only had a couple of outfits (0-3) that still fit him at all.
It looks like I'm in the vast minority here on the sacks with the drawstring on the bottom....I HATED them! Alex kicks so much it's just about impossible to keep socks on him - unless they have great elastic - or a drawstring around his feet. Even in his sleep, he'd just kick the bottom of that outfit wide open and it would be up around his waist in minutes. :( I have one sack left that I'll try with the next baby, but that's it! Onesies and footed sleepers are what he wore all the time during those first couple of months.
I also agree with having more clothes....between spit-up and blow-outs you could be changing their clothes 5x a day! Alex doesn't even spit up that much, but he'd always manage a good one just before we'd leave the house....

With my son, I had stocked up on 0-3 and 3-6 b/c we were expecting a "big baby"... we got a 6lb 8oz skinny little man that didn't grow too quickly at all... He was still in 0-3 @ 6 months in some things! With my girls, they were 3lb14oz & 4lb10oz @ birth, and are in 3-6 month clothes, and have been for about 2 weeks old. They are 4.5 months old. In "real" clothes, outfits and the like, 0-3 can go much longer than 0-3 alot of the times... I would DEFINITELY invest more in sleepers, gowns are GREAT, onesies, etc., especially since you're having a summer baby... They can just hang out in a diaper :) My son was a July baby, the girls were November, so Jacob hung out in diapers ALOT for the first 3 months or so... But I agree with most everyone who says don't worry about "real" clothes and stick with sleepers...

March 19th, 2004, 08:52 PM
Sam was 8 lbs. 6 oz. at birth, and outgrew her 0-3 month clothes by about 2 months. Her main problem is her length...she's a tall girl (off the charts in height). I can't wait for summer because length isn't as much of an issue in shorts!
I love "real" clothes on babies, but they are a pain sometimes. Onesies and sleepers/gowns are the way to go with a newborn. We've always had about 15 onesies and 10 sleepers in Sam's size, and that's worked pretty well for us so far (I do a load of laundry for her at least once a week).

Carter was 8lbs 12oz when he was born and grew unbelievably fast. He only wore 0-3 month clothes for no more than 1 month. But, that is really fast - most kids don't grow out of them quite that fast. He was gaining weight at twice the speed a normal child would.
I agree with Kim - he peed through every single diaper no matter what for like the first 2 weeks. It was horrible. I would have lots of sleepers and onesies on hand for that. We were doing a full load of laundry every single day. Also, in that area - you might want to make sure his little pee pee is pointing downward. Carter's pointed up and dh wouldn't let me push it down because it wanted to go up. I think that's one of the reasons he peed through every diaper. Finally, I started pointing it down and it helped! Also, we were using newborn diapers because they say that they go up to 12 pounds, but they were too small for him. The size 1's actually start at 8 lbs. and they worked much better for Carter!

Katie was 7lbs 4oz at birth, but I think all of that was muscle because she's TINY! She was in 0-3 clothes until she was about 6 months (even though she was great weight wise). Now she's 8 1/2 months she still in many of her 3-6 clothes.
A few things that I've noticed. Old Navy clothes are longer in the torso than some others, Gap clothes are wider and shorter. Gerber onsies run a little large and last a long time.
Katie was born on July 17, 2003 and she spent her first weeks in onsies, t-shirts, or just in a diaper. I did get some cute onsie outfits, but I'm not a "whole" get up type of gal.

I agree with getting more stuff. We only had gowns in the 0-3 month size because3 everyone thought we were having a gigundo baby, he was 6lbs 15oz! We had like 6 or 7 gowns and the second day home had to do laundry already! These gowns will fit him for quite a while, as his arms and legs are short and they run pretty big. We got them at Kohl's and Target.

Wow, I'd LOVE it if Aiden would've lasted so long in his 0-3 month clothes as some of the more "petite" babies. I just loved some of the outfits he had.....
Aiden lasted 2 months in 0-3 months and was born July 7th. He lived in those Carter terry sleep n play outfits (still does). We also didn't like the gowns, he moved and wiggled too much and hated how tangled he would get in his gowns (even though they were sooooo precious on him!)

Okay, I must have a huge baby. My guy was 11lbs 6oz at birth and wore 0-3 month clothes for 2 weeks, and those last few days those clothes were snug. He is just about out of 3-6 month clothes at 6.5 weeks.
He wore size 1 diapers for those first 2 weeks and is just about ready to move to size 3 diapers, they seem run well with clothing sizes for him. When it is time to switch to the next size for one it is for the other too.
We weighed him last night on the bathroom scale and he is almost 14lbs and just about 25" now.

Caid is 2 1/2 weeks old and has outgrown most of his 0-3 month sleepers already. He isn't all that big weight wise (7lbs 7ounces at birth 8lbs 9ounces now) but he is LONG!(21 3/4ths inches at birth 22 1/2 inches now) He has been wearing 3-6 month and 0-6 month sleepers for the past 4 days.

This was Nolan too, we had like 5 of those sack sleepers and he only wore them a couple of times before I realized they weren't going to work for him. He was 22.5" at birth and if I remember correctly, had already grown another couple of inches by the time he was 8 weeks old...

Genavieve was 7lbs 1 oz at birth and wore 0-3 months until right about 3 months. She started outgrowing onesies first although a few of them still fit depending on the brand. But, she doesn't wear any of her 0-3 month sleepers or outfits anymore.

I think it just really depends on the length & weight of the baby I would say.
Adi was born at 8lbs 1oz. she will be 4 months this Friday (4-30) and her onesies still fit that are 0-3mo, she is really long, just about 26" right now so length for 0-3mo she went out the window lately but up until really close to 3 months she was still in some brand 0-3months. Now we are starting all over again with 3-6mo being too big, its true that they really only *fit* perfectly for a short while, but in our situation she was in the clothes for a good while and we got our use out of it, however for the first 2 months she basically lived in sleepers, so we really didnt need as many *outfits* that we had but it was fun to play dress up!

I know that the message that I am responding to was sent a long time ago, but I am believing that someone will benefit from my response! I have found that the length of time a baby can wear clothing items that are sized for 0-3 months of age depends on these things: the size of the baby at birth, their growth rate and also the brand name of the clothing.
My baby was 6lbs and 13oz's when he was born (May 03, 2005 ) and I am learning a lot about the clothing of a newborn. Yes they do grow fast but if you plan on having more children and this is your first don't be so hard on yourself about buying what you may feel is "too many clothes". You can always store them and use them again. Also, if you keep them clean and use bibs on shirts and onesies you can bless a family member or friend with lots of goodies for their baby. If you see things that you want your newborn baby to have and you have the means to get it then do so. This is your baby and you deserve to dress himor her in a variety of things if you so choose!
The brand name "Carter" is an excellent brand. You can find it at Burlington Coat Factory for a lesser price. I have found that my baby can still wear Carter's "NB" or newborn size and he has got to be at least 13 lbs right now (He turns 3 months on August 3rd). Carter's NB size states on the tag that it will fit up to 7lbs. Well, like I said, my baby is at least 13 lbs. Their sizes run bigger than they advertise according to my baby's weight when I compare them to other brands!
He has other clothing items made by "Starting Out" (You can find this brand name at Dillard's). Starting Out has beautiful sets for babies! The onesies by this brand name shrink when you wash them and my baby being a couple of days from 3 months of age cannot fit their 3-6 month items at all after they have been washed. It looked like he would fit it when I looked at the onesie in the store but when I washed it, it shrunk and now it looks like a 0-3 month item made by them. The shorts that came with it is size 3-6 months as well and believe it or not he has room to grow into them! Yes the onesie shirt shrunk but the shorts didn't. They were definitely a set but each piece made of different materials! I just have what once was a complete outfit, now appearing to be something that he can't wear together. I guess I could have kept the shorts and swapped onesies for a 6-9 month size, but when you see it in the store you would have thought that if I wanted him to wear this now 6-9 month onesie it would have been too big!
The best thing to do is to know your brand names and experiment a little. You will be surprised at how some brand names will hold up in the wash :sewmachin!

Since we have started this up again, I will also respond! Ian was large at birth (8 lbs, 15 ozs.) and was in 0-3 months for a short time, many 6 weeks. He was born in September and it was still warm so he was wearing alot of the little cross-over t-shirts (you know what I mean?) and a diaper and a onsie at night for sleeping.
I also have found that brand does count for a lot when looking at sizes, especially when they get bigger. Carter is a very cute brand, but for Ian, ran small. As did Koala Kids, the Kids R' Us brand which is soooo cute. Old Navy seems to be pretty true to size while Baby Gap runs slightly big. Children's place stuff seems to be good.
I should follow this all up by saying that Ian is now about 26 and a half pounds and wearing 18 months clothes...he is 10 and a half months.

I responded to this a long time ago about my daughter Melayna. She was in 0-3 for a long time... about 4-5 months I think. But she was small at birth and petite (still is). I had my son about 4 months ago and he was bigger at birth (8lbs 3oz) and he gained weight very quickly! He was out of most of his 0-3 month clothes by 2 months, some sooner. I found that the Carter's Rompers and most of the Gymbo clothes ran a bit bigger and he was able to wear them longer.

Elias will be 4 months next week and he is still wearing some 0-3 months. I'm buying some things size 3 months because 3-6 is too big for him and I rather see him wearing something 3 or 4 tims but his own size.
He's now in the transition from newborn diapers to medium (5 to 8 kgs)
He's still petite
