My name is Amber and I just had my 2nd miscarriage. My first miscarriage was due to the placenta pulling away from the uterine wall at 18 weeks. My 2nd was due to a lack of progesterone(9 weeks preg) I just found out from the doctor of the reason. Unfortunately I didn't know before. The doctor told me I am going to have to get the shots if I want to try again. Are these shots typically covered by insurance or is it going to be out of pocket for me? Can anyone please let me know what to expect? I do have 2 girls that the pregnancys went fine and were 100% healthy. I am scared to even try again. Please help. Thank you.

I do not know anything about the progesterone being covered by insurance or not. I just wanted to say sorry for your 2 losses. :( I hope everything works out next time now that you know what the problem might be.

You can call your insurance company to find out whether they cover progesterone. All companies are different as far as what they will cover.
I've had progesterone injections in the past. Do you also have any questions pertaining to the injections?
Sorry to hear about your miscarriages. I know that even if you already have children it's not necessarily easy to cope with.

Pam,
I wanted to say thank you. As far as the injections, did you have any problems with them? Did you start getting them before you got pregnant or after you were already pregnant? I want to try to prevent another one. Both were so hard to take. Thank you again

Thank you Lyoshka and Amy05, I appreciate every little bit of help I can get. I'm glad there is a place I can go to, to talk to people that have been through the same thing. I truly do appreciate it. Thanks

Hi Amber -- I think docs do it differently based on your progesterone levels and history. I don't think they start the shots before having a + test, though. Some people use supposotories, as well. :dunno: I would discuss it with your OB and have a plan in place before.
I am so sorry about your losses :hug99:

Amber ~ My situation is different than yours in that we used the Progesterone shots (& later suppositories) in an Invitro Fertalization cycle. I believe that I started shortly after the embryo transfer, maybe a few days after. I think that in cases where you are ble to get pregnant on your own that you start the shots after you get a positive, like Karri mentioned.
The injections weren't pleasant. The progesterone is in oil, so it's thick & you might feel it for a bit while it's going in. We had to do them at home. Some women do them themselves. I didn't want to partially since the spot isn't easy to reach, so my husband ended up with the task. Several things that helped were to ice the spot before the injection (so it gets super cold), then afterwards to warm it & massage the area. I ended up with some bruises after one cycle that were pretty uncomfortble.
I look back & think that they weren't too bad. We did have to do them within a certain time frame every evening, so sometimes it was tricky since we were generally out quite a bit.
