View Full Version : What do you think about the reputation thing so far?

I'm really not sure if we will keep it. It can be fun, but people are also getting their feelings hurt, and I don't like that.

But, for now, I'm curious-- what do you think of it?

Stacey
November 13th, 2006, 10:23 AM
I think it's fun as part of the November posting thing... or in conjunction with it. I don't think it's actually part of it. But I'm not sure about it being an all-the-time type thing.

Barb

I voted "take it or leave it". I'm having fun with it, but I understand how others could be bothered by it.

I think I like that it is there to the effect that it is so easy to send a nice message to a friend rather then dealing with pm's. This way is short and simple! I don't care about the boxes or the numbers in people's profiles. I don't see it as a competition or anything. I like the idea of having a way to just say a nice thing to someone short and simple :dunno:

For now it's fun. I think I like it b/c I'm not taking it seriously at all. I'm not concerned about how many rep points I have or if I get a negative. I'm just having fun giving positive rep to people and reading the comments I get. But I can see where people could get their feelings hurt if they get negatives or whatever. Especially if it all becomes a popularity contest.

So I guess I'm saying I'm fine if it stays or goes. :)

gulp!
November 13th, 2006, 10:28 AM
I'm having fun leaving positive rep to people (especially those I don't know as well), but I can see how having the whole board see how many boxes you have might make people feel bad. So I guess I'd vote for continuing the rep, but not showing the amount under the profile pics.

If people really want to know who has the most points, they can go to the Member list and look there. :dunno:

I like surprising people with good mojo or leaving funny comments, but I think the opportunity to be passive aggressive or nasty to people and not have to own up to it (by not leaving comments or signing your name) is a downside. So I could take it or leave it.

schwanda
November 13th, 2006, 10:34 AM
I've enjoyed it but I'd hate to see people having their feelings hurt. If it's causing more hard feelings than happiness, I would get rid of it.

I agree that it has been fun to leave funny or nice comments to people, and it's great to get them, too. I can see how the negatives can be used in a not so nice way and I hate to see people get their feelings hurt by that.

I like the idea of getting rid of the boxes and numbers. I don't pay attention to them, and they're kind of visual clutter over there.

AmyLynn
November 13th, 2006, 12:28 PM
Well, right now I don't really have much to say, because in general I don't have much time to post anymore. But all it says is that I have a reputation, no comments that I am aware of, or maybe I just don't know how to read it.

NOW, I have to edit this because I do see something other than I "have a reputation". Reading that I "have a reputation, actually made me laugh.....you know....she has a reputation.

Try not to think of Bad Rep as a personal attach just that that person didn't like what you posted. If they choose to not say thier name well that is for them to deal with. Don't let it get you down :hug99:

It's been fun as a temporary thing. As an ongoing thing,I could see how it could become a bit too much like a popularity contest & leave some people with hurt feelings.

Like some others said, I love the rep as a fast and easy way to give someone a little perk. I don't see anything positive about the negative rep though. I said this in another thread somewhere... if you have a substantive point you want to make regarding someone's post, you can do that within the thread. Leaving someone a negative rep, which I'm assuming is usually without comment and unsigned, does nothing but hurt someone's feelings.

So I wish there was a way to turn off the negative option and also I agree with not showing the points in the profile. I think keeping the point total as a column in the member's list is a good enough way for someone to check into it if they want to.

Well, I think that just sucks that you got bad rep, Begona. Sucks even worse that you are getting such an unwelcome reaction in your neighborhood. I, personally, thought it was super nice of you to go to all that effort to post pictures of various clothes/outfits. :hug99:

Jayne
November 13th, 2006, 02:24 PM
I am sorry your feeling so unwelcome everywhere Begona. I hope that you know that it isn't the feeling of the whole board. I don't think anyone wants to make a person feel unwelcome :hug99:

Michele
November 13th, 2006, 03:15 PM
Deb told me to "full stop" (I guess not to post anything else regarding this rep thing), well that is kinda mean but I'm taking your advise. Full stop, it shouldn't have been a big deal.

Begona - first of all, I'm sorry you've been having a tough time and feeling hurt. I can't believe that people would put signs up in your yard in this day and age. :flippy: to them!

Anyway, I'm pretty sure Deb is asleep right now and I don't want to speak for her, but I didn't take her posting "full stop" as meaning she wanted you to stop posting. Saying "full stop" is just a way to end a sentence in British (and I guess Aussie ) English - like another word for period. It comes from the days when telegrams were sent. A telegram would say "stop" instead of having a period, and "full stop" was used to demark the end of the entire telegram (ok and now I should go to the useless trivia thread!). It is kind of like where someone here says "period" at the end of their sentence for emphasis. As in "I don't like mushrooms. Period!"

Anyway, I just wanted to say that b/c I really don't think Deb meant for you to stop posting all together....

Shel

I'm not a fan, because I'm not big on popularity contests. (Especially since I have no rep compared to everyone else  ) I've just been pretty much ignoring it and have only used it once, but if you leave it, I'm not going to be all upset by it. I'd love it if we could take the number out of our profiles though, or at least have it as an option if we wanted it in there for people who like to play.

Bring on the negative rep. I've already been called the "One bad apple" in my rep for posting that I didn't like it earlier

LISA
November 13th, 2006, 04:53 PM

I confess I am the one who put the words bad apple in Shel's positive rep but I was trying to say that the person spreading the negative rep is the one bad apple that spoils the rest. That person is spoiling the fun for everyone else who is treating this as a fun game not a serious thing. Shel is not a bad apple for not liking the game so much.

Sorry for the misunderstanding Shel! :)

Begona, I agree with Michele and Lisa on what Deb said. I'm sorry your neighbours suck! :hug99:

Bev

Actually I totally understand how it happened. She said something about not liking it because of a popularity contest and some negative reps or something and I put in a hug and said it was a fun game to give it a chance and then totally changed the subject and said something like One bad apple, eh? Assuming she would know I was talking about the person throwing around negative rep.

My bad. Or do they even say that anymore?

I agree. I like that i can see a comment and its a cute pick me up and i can leave one and do the same. I like that it can be tied to a post and its easy. I don't care about the rest.

I think its been fun for Nov, but then it should be put to rest. People are getting their undies in a bundle over something they shouldnt, IMO.

I think it's nice you can leave fun notes for people. I've never been big on PM's, but I like this. It's awesome to come here and see if you have any new notes! What I don't like is the negatives. There's enough crap in real life, I don't think you need to come here and get it too. I'm sure like others, I come here for a break. Not to come here and find out someone didn't like my post and gave it a negative. Sure, it's not "personal" and I shouldn't give a crap, but I would. It's a two way street, I wouldn't give anyone a negative either. Life's too short to crank about stuff like that. Especially the silly ones people have been getting negatives for.

I would agree in that I have had three neg rep comments coming from my last post back in July about Mary possibly having cancer. None of them have been signed. I sure am glad three people took the time to find out what my last post was to do that. Somone left one and was at least honest enough to sign it and let me know why they were doing it.

I'm having trouble keeping up, too. I end up hitting a bunch of people in one thread because I forget and then play catch up. It's not that it's a popularity contest as far as I'm concerned; it's more in how often you post. The more you post, the better the chances I'll hit you with some rep. (and I have a feeling that's the case in general; I bet the people with the highest post counts have higher rep points.)

I gave you the negative for your post in the Beatles thread. I don't why you would jump in to a Beatles discussion when you don't even like them. :dunno: I don't watch Grey's Anatomy and I've never even read the thread, let alone jumped in to say, "I don't watch it, so I have nothing to say".

Blue means that the person who gave you rep has no rep power.

Jayne
November 15th, 2006, 08:00 AM
NO power Sheila...Meaning they have no rep or meaing they wanted to give you rep but at that time they didn't have it to give so you get a hint of it?

sheila
November 15th, 2006, 08:18 AM
No power, meaning their reputation power is 0. I used Stagg's account to test the rep thing initially, and his to me was blue. Now that he has rep, his has power, so it would be green.

Blue reps are rare, rare things. Clare should feel lucky.

I'm laughing my butt off at these last posts.... "Jayne is a name known to all is my fave so far." :tease:

I think I like that it is there to the effect that it is so easy to send a nice message to a friend rather then dealing with pm's. This way is short and simple! I don't care about the boxes or the numbers in people's profiles. I don't see it as a competition or anything. I like the idea of having a way to just say a nice thing to someone short and simple :dunno:Good idea, Jayne

I'm "meh" about the whole contest - take it or leave it.

I think it's ok as long as people take it in stride.

My boxes say I have a spectacular aura :giggle:

No power, meaning their reputation power is 0. I used Stagg's account to test the rep thing initially, and his to me was blue. Now that he has rep, his has power, so it would be green.

Blue reps are rare, rare things. Clare should feel lucky.

"Reputation for Dummies" :loser: needed here. Could you explain, um, differently please?

Nichole

Cami, it means that the person who gave the reputation doesn't have enough posts or hasn't been here long enough to have any reputation power. I think your "reputation power" is determined by how long you've been here (you get a point for each year), how many posts you have (a point for every 1000 posts), and I think you also get more as your reputation number goes up. So the person who gave Clare that rep is probably new or has a really low post count. Make sense? :)

When you give reputation, you give a certain number. This comes from how much reputation you have, how long you've been a member and how many posts you have. The more of any/all you have, the stronger your reputation power is.

So when Clare got reputation with a power of "0," it came from someone who had very few posts, little reputation and was new.

Does that help?

Thanks for the blue box explanation, Sheila :) I'm just glad to know that I don't need to get my eyes checked

I got it from a welcome thread, so it must have come from the new member that I welcomed, hence the no power yet :)

Trish~ The reputation has nothing to do with the posting contest. The two are separate.

I just wish I could give more than 20 reps a day. :shuffle: I keep hitting my limit and having to wait.

OK - so I have to have a certain number of posts to give a reputation. More importantly, can I still *get* a reputation? I am aiming for a record. Call me REDMan!
