View Full Version : Have you turned on the heat already?

Now that autumn is here to stay I am thinking of turning on the heater at night in the kids' room for the first time tonight.

That made me wonder ---

Have you turned on the heater already?
When did you start heating?
Do you heat 24/7? Do you have a thermostat that checks the temperature?
Do you heat the bathtroom when they take baths/showers?

We turned on the heat a few weeks ago. As far as we can tell, there's no thermostat, just an on/off switch, so we turn it on for short periods until we're suffocatingly hot. I usually turn it on in the evenings before the kids take a bath and then turn it off before I go to bed or in the middle of the night. Or in the morning if I feel cold all night. And definitely in the bathrooms too.

I am going to turn on the heater in the kids' bedroom tonight I think. Our place is insulated really well so there was no need so far. Now the nights are getting cold so I guess itis time to start.
Unfortunately we don;t have a heater in the bathroom. But last years I used to drag the mobile heater we use for the kids' room to the bathroom when it was really cold.

My goodness yes..it has gotten below 30 here at night so it was needed. I have ours set at 68 so it comes on and off as the house drops that low.

Yep, we started over a month ago due to some pretty cool nights and frosts.

we have a thermostat on the wall in this room and its set usually around 69...but I have been known to kick it up to 72 to get it warmed up in here.
Especially if the fire in the other room is not going.

our main bathroom with shower is actually downstairs so its heated 24/7. My dryer is in there too so they can warm up towels if they want LOL.

We've also had a hard freeze, so it has come on. We also have programmable thermostats, so it only comes on when it dips below 68 at certain times.

We've turned the heat on, turned it off, turned it on, and I think that today is supposed to be another day when we turn it off and open the windows. Aah, autumn in Georgia.

Ours has probably been on for about a month. Our house is pretty cold. We have programmable thermostats that are set at 66 for the hours we're home and awake, and 62 when we're gone for the day and when we sleep. Last week, I was home sick one day with Maggie and it got really cold! I had to override the thermostat. Our bathroom also has a fan that will blow hot air so I use that when I shower.

As much as it killed me, I had to turn them on because we've had some pretty cold days. At first I had it set for 62, then it got a little colder and my cats were sleeping on top of me to stay warm. I felt bad so I turned it up to 64. Now it's programmed to be at 64 during the day while I'm at work and 67 when I come home.

We've had ours on for awhile now. The weather in the mountainsis so wacky that you need the heat one day and the a/c the next. For example, it was 70 yesterday and today we are supposed to have snow. We do keep or thermostat pretty low 64 or so, but I cranck it to 70 and let it run once or twice when I get up inthe morning then turnit back down.

We have also had the heat on for quite some time now. Typically we have it set at 68, at night I will put it down to about 66 because we keep the kids doors closed and for some reason it tends to get too warm in there at night for them.

Ours has been on for about a month now. It's a programmable thermostat, it's anywhere between 68 and 70 depending on how I'm feeling.

That's the same thing we get :) We've already had snow and it's been going down to the 30s and even the 20s at night. Then yesterday it was 80. But it's supposed to be back in the 40s this weekend.

We set it at 62 at night and during the day when we're gone and 68 when we're home.

Dang, I'd have to bring a sweater to all of your houses! We've had ours on for a few weeks now. It's set at 72 during the day (because the kids and the nanny are there), and 68 at night. Ours is programmable, so we have it go up or down a few times depending on the activity level in the house at the time.

Yep, we've had it on for about a month now when we realized that the blanket on our bed wasn't enough at night. It's set for 68 during the day and 65 at night so cycles on and off as the house reaches those temperature.

Yes, ours has been on for awhile now, too. Its set at 68 during the day and 62 at night. (stef, i am cold like you, but thankfully we have all those windows and the sunshine gives us some natural heat)

Not yet, but I considered it a couple of weeks ago when it cooled down a little. I even bought a new space heater for the boys' room (we don't turn the furnace on at night because it overheats the bedrooms, so I just use a little heater for the boys and extra blankets for us). But then the heat came back (90s! :faint: ), so I haven't needed to.

We have a programmed thermostat so it comes and goes. It had been on for the last few days, but yesterday our air conditioner kicked back on

Us too, but we've got 4 floors to heat. :complain: The living room, where the thermostat is, is flooded in the afternoon and is blazing hot, so the basement room stays cold b/c the thermostat thinks it's warm in the house.

Karri likes it a bit chilly  Windows with lots of sun help. Ours is set for 70 during the day, and 65 for the night. OUr living just won't get warm enough if I set the temp any lower.

We turned ours on a few weeks ago too. We turn it to 68 when we get home from work. Then we turn it down to 62 before we go to bed and it stays there until we come home work the next day.

We have the opposite problem, Stef. Our thermostat is in our big open family room/adjoining big open living room, so it thinks it's never warm enough and then our bedrooms turn into blazing infernos.

Isn't that what sweaters are for? :giggle:

Yep, we've had ours on since the beginning of October. It's a programmable thermostat so it's 68 during the day, goes down to 67 at 5:00 and 64 by 9:00.

Got our first bill this morning. September = $32, October = $75.

I'm a miser and I have electric heat ($$)! I turned it on once in the other morning but only b/c I had a guy here installing weather stripping on the doors and he had the doors open for a while. After he left I thought it was too cold in here for Anna.

This place is pretty well insulated and gets a ton of sun, so even though it has been cold, I really haven't needed to turn it on besides that one morning.

We also have a similar problem as Stef and Nichole, our thermostat is downstairs right in the draft of the door (nice design! ) so it thinks it is cold in here and kicks on more than it needs to. The bedrooms are always about 10 degrees warmer than downstairs b/c of this. I wish it was the other way around.

Nope, we had a couple of cool days (mid 50's) but we're back to the low 80's :disbelief:

Oh yeah we've turned it on. It's set to 67 when we are home at night or on the weekends and down to 62 at night. So far the bill is still under $100/month.

If you are cold, put on something warm and wear your slippers.

I am interested to see how this will change for us in the next few weeks as we adjust from being in a 1 story 1300 sq ft home to a 2 story 2000 sq ft home.

I am a little skeered. :errr:

We have this weather too. It was 65 yesterday and it's snowing today. Ours has been on since the beginning of October, but I turn it off when it's warm out.

Haven't turned it on here yet. It's still in the 80's during the day and just down to the upper 50s at night. Our house is insulated enough that it doesn't get overly cold at night here yet. Really we rarely ever turn on the heat. But we live in the desert. :)
