View Full Version : Every day things that skeeve you out

I was thinking about this today as I was picking hair out of my shower drain (yuck!!!)....

What sorts of "normal" every day things gross you out? I don't mean like vomit which grosses everyone out (especially me!) but more daily life kinds of things.

For example: When I was at gymnastics camp as a kid, one of my bunkmates could not stand to watch someone else brushing their teeth. It totally grossed her out and made her nauseous. Do you have any "weirdnesses" like that???

My partial list:

1. We don't have a disposal in our kitchen sink in NY so we have to clean out the drain thingy after doing the dishes. It totally grosses me out! I HATE doing it.
2. I hate cleaning out the shower drain when it gets clogged with hair. YUCK!

I'm sure I'll think of more things...

I hate belly buttons. I hate looking at them and I hate it when people (Keith or Aaron) try to touch mine. And I especially hate it when Aaron's poking a finger in his own. :errr: (Just typing this out is giving me the chills)

That reminds me, Lynn. I can't stand to have the front of my neck touched. If I have to have my thyroid examined, I freak out! I swear I was strangled in my last life...

Lynn, Phil's the same way with belly buttons.

I hate people biting their nails. :dead: YUCK! It's like nails on a chalkboard to me. And I hate picking up nail clippings.

I'm that way with my collar bone, I don't even like shirts to touch it.

My step-father can not handle feet, he doesn't like his own feet, he can't handle if someone elses feet touch him, it's really quite funny at times, my mom teases him a lot.

looking a raw chicken makes me nauseous, thinking about the fact that chicken I am currently eating USED to be raw makes it so I can't eat it.

Stray hairs on me. I know they are my own, but it gives me the gag-and-pukes to have a random one stuck in my neck and tickling my collarbone, or dangling down the back of my neck. If I find a stray hair on my shirt, I fling it like if I found a bug. And shampooing my hair and having a few strays tangled around my fingers drives me INSANE. I have to stop and get them all off right away.

I can't stand to touch raw red meat...really hinders cooking!

I CANNOT bear it to have someone grab me by the ankle. It's a mixture of extreme ticklishness and a sensation of claustraphobia. Weird, I know. And my brothers still try to torture me by doing it. Both have been inadvertently kicked in inopportune places as a result of the thrashing I do to get away from the ankle grab. You think they'd learn!

I cannot stand anyone touching my waist. I clamp my elbows into their hands and yell at them to get them off me!

I hate cleaning out the peanut butter jar for recycling. I've taken to putting it in the dishwasher so I don't have to touch it.

I can't watch people slap gum, bite or pick their nails or twirl their hair. Drives me insane

OMG Clare that reminds me, Caroline's little friend Sarah next door is a compulsive hair biter/twirler/twister and it's all I can do not to slap her hands away when I see her do it!

I hate cleaning the drain in the sink too, Amanda. We have a disposal, but sometimes the kids throw their dishes into the wrong side.

I cannot stand the sound of metal rubbing on other metal, or the sound of metal on teeth (when people scrap their forks on their teeth). It hurts my teeth. Every time I go to the dentist, I have to remind them that I'm not flinching b/c they're hurting me, but b/c I can't take the metal scraping on my teeth.

I also don't like when people touch my face. I think this is left over from when I'd have breakouts. It's like I can just feel the oil and pollutants on their hands making my face clogged and oily.

I can't stand to feel bits of food floating around in the dishwater as I am washing dishes. I have to scrape & rinse them well before washing, or wear gloves. The feeling is the same to me as when you vomit and can feel the chunks of food coming up. Oh it turns my stomach just thinking about it.:puke:

Amanda I'm the same way over tooth brushing; I can't STAND watching anyone brush their teeth! Similarly, if I brush too hard or somehow "catch a whiff" of my own breath when brushing it makes me :puke: .

I also can't stand chalky things, esp. if the outside of metal pans or something similar get chalky. I can barely write about it. :errr: My husband insists on putting pans in the dishwasher, so they always get chalky and I can barely stand to touch them!

And although this doesn't skeeve me out (sorry) I hate seeing women wear shoes that are too small - esp. like sandals where their heels or toes are hanging off the ends. I just fixate on looking at it in horror. :errr:

I can't stand it when people crack their knuckles...you know, in their hands. Ewww...that sound.

The only thing I can think of is cleaning the hair out of the shower drain. :puke: Both Paul and I have long hair.....so it's a regular job. :(

Oh, I thought of another one - cleaning up cat/dog puke. :puke: Steve does this regularly (hair balls).....and thankfully, it's rare for Greta. So gross........

I can't handle breath, it freaks me out, even if it doesn't smell just the feeling of warm breath on my face sends me crazy. I am constantly making Tony turn over so he doesn't breathe on me.

That goes in hand with the close talker. I have personal space that needs respecting, I feel all squimy if someone gets into it.

I also can't handle the sound of someone gulping liquid down their throat, or chewing noisely YUCK

Not just shoes, but also socks. I can't stand that pilling between my toes.

Pants....you mean undies only or skirt? Cause I am an underwear girl in the house :giggle: So watch it when you stop by unannounced

I also cannot stand anyone touching my belly button. I have this insane fear that if they do it will rip open. :giggle:

I can't handle putting lotion on my feet either, and I need to. They are so dry that it makes me teeth hurt to do it. (yes, I'm weird. )

Girlo

Silke - I hate socks more than I hate shoes. :giggle: I only wear socks if I HAVE to.

As for the no pants policy.....I won't be offended if I stop by your house....because I walk around the house the same way - tshirt and undies (panties??? :giggle: ) ideally. :heee: I do wear a long enough shirt so that my a$$ is covered just in case we do get company. I'm short though, so most shirts go down that far. :giggle:

Oh hair sucking is worse then twirling :errr: I also hate it when kids suck on their clothes!

I can't stand the knuckles thing.
I can't bear anyone/anything touching my bare knees/legs/feet.
I can't stand when my kids suck in (inhale) their stuffy noses.
When I hear someone puke I am close to puking myself.
I hate wearing boots - I love walking around in socks :)

I hate, hate, hate wet food in the kitchen sink. It makes me :dead: when someone takes a plate with food bits on it, runs water on it, and lets it sit there in the sink. Scrape the food off before you rinse the plate!

I hate cleaning out the peanut butter jar for recycling. I've taken to putting it in the dishwasher so I don't have to touch it.

That is a great idea. I hate the globs of PB that don't rinse out of the jar.

I thought of another one last night. Toenails. I hate toenails. I don't care if you have the prettiest feet in the world, or that you just got a gorgeous pedicure. Don't show me your toenails!!
A couple of months ago I was in Target and this woman was wearing flip flops. But she shouldn't have been because she seriously had the most heinous LONG toenails and it was grossing me out so much I had to change the line I was in!

Bev
November 8th, 2006, 09:28 AM
Oh Lynn!! I almost :puke: one time at a clients house when he was barefoot with long scraggly toenails starting to go ove the end of his toe. :errr: I'm throwing up in my mouth just thinking about it! :dead:

I HATE things around my neck. Turtlenecks, hands, etc. I'm okay with a neckwarmer or scarf because it's not tight.

Mine is particularly noticeable this time of year. Wet socks. :errr: I walk around the house in socks to keep my feet warm. If I walk through even the smallest amount of water, by the dog bowl or the sink, it gives me the heebie-jeebies and I have to take the socks off immediately.

I hate when the utensils scrape against the plate.
Long toenails.
Someone touching my belly.
When the cats do their business while I'm doing mine.

~ kids chewing on mittens
~ someone grinding their teeth
~ cat hairballs
~ vomit (including the sound of someone vomiting or wretching)
~ a dirty sink or dirty stovetop, I am always bleaching both of those.
~ chewing gum that is chewed up and not in someones mouth, or in the garbage
~ kids who wipe snotty noses on their sleeves, arms, front of their shirt (or parents who will use the child's shirt to wipe the child's nose... GROSS)
~ WHINING (adult or child)

YES! This is the first thing that came to my mind. I hate that feeling! :errr:

I also get skeeved by hair in the drain. Yick.

And I don't like to touch the handle of the toilet brush, because I imagine all of the germs from the brush part crawling up to the handle. :errr:

Bridget, I'm so with you on toes hanging over shoes! It's so tacky!

And long talon-like toenails. Nasty. :dead:
