View Full Version : How do you make a PBJ?

gulp!
November 5th, 2006, 02:36 PM
As I was letting my 4 year old make her PBJ today, I realized that both of us always put the peanut butter on the right hand side, and the jelly on the left. Every time.

How do you make your PBJ?

Bridget
November 5th, 2006, 02:43 PM
I make mine without the J. :scan:

I've made them for my husband but not enough to be 100% sure how I make them. By PB on the right hand side do you mean if you lay two pieces of bread out you put PB on the right one? Because I *think* that's what I do too.

Kelly
November 5th, 2006, 02:51 PM
PB on my left, jelly on the right.

Sandy
November 5th, 2006, 02:55 PM
I don't. I think they are disgusting!

I should say that I wouldn't eat a pb & j if you paid me, but Alex loves them. Gag!

I don't....HIGHLY allergic :giggle:

Same way. But if I am having toast and am using jam I will put jam on the right one and PB on the left. :screwy: I don't put them both on the same piece.

gulp!
November 5th, 2006, 03:17 PM
By PB on the right hand side do you mean if you lay two pieces of bread out you put PB on the right one?

I'm surprised by so many of you who don't like PBJ! :faint: I could eat them everyday. :)

Coincidentally, when making a deli sandwich, I always put the meat on the right side and cheese and mustard on the left side.

Karri
November 5th, 2006, 03:59 PM
PB on the right, fruit spread on the left.

I could live on them (and PB & banana) as well :lick:

Cami
November 5th, 2006, 04:01 PM
:dead: PB. I like the J. I have no idea which part goes on which slice of bread. But I do know that I flop the PB slice onto the J slice so the J doesn't drip off.

And btw, they don't have grape jelly in England.

I feel like all my posts today have said, "and here's another stupid England thing" :violin:

It's not that I don't like them...I LOVE them!!!!! It kills me that I (and my boys) miss out:mope:.

Darn allergies :tantrum:

I do it the same as you and Emma, Stef. I do the same with a deli sandwich too. Weird!

I don't think that I have ever noticed what goes on what side and when. I guess I'm not very observant.

Michal
November 5th, 2006, 05:12 PM
I always put the PB on the left then the J right on top of the PB.

Barb
November 5th, 2006, 06:13 PM
OK, I'm weird. PB on both sides and then jelly on the left. I don't like the jelly soaking into the bread. :)

Clare
November 5th, 2006, 06:25 PM
I've never made one and I never will :dead:

Emily said to me the other day "do you know that in America they put jam on their peanut butter sandwiches? WHY would they do that????"

LISA
November 5th, 2006, 06:27 PM
Hmm we don't make PBJ but I did used to make Cass PB and Nutella and from what I can recall I would butter the left with peanut butter and the right with Nutella.

Jayne
November 5th, 2006, 06:30 PM
PB on the right and J on the left. I love love love them and could also eat them every day!

MrsPeacefrog
November 5th, 2006, 07:25 PM
Now Lisa has the right idea!! I would definatley do a PB & Nutella sandwich but I would NEVER do a PB&J I have never done it and never will.

It's just not done here. I didn't even know what it was till I went to America when I was 15 and the host family I stayed with made one for me and I about vomited! :lol2:

Oh and as a side note I think it's funny you guys are calling Jam - Jelly

I've seen both jam & jelly here. Made by the same companies (like Smuckers &, hm, can't remember the stuff I usually buy  ). Though I would probably say jelly either way

:woo: i finally found something that i am not *anal with a capital A* about ... seriously ... while i can only eat a sammich if it is cut *diagonally* ... there is no rhyme or reason to where the P or the J goes [or the Meat or Lettuce, etc. goes ...

oh ... and fwiw ... i LOVE PB&J's ... rarely make em though ... and it MUST be Crunchy and Grape :lick:

Mrs. Shae

I've seen both jam & jelly here.

the Jam is easier to spread

MrsPeacefrog
November 5th, 2006, 07:50 PM
oh okay, so jam isn't jelly then? I always presumed that is what you mean. So what is jelly then? for us jelly is stuff you make with gelatine and you put it in the fridge to set and you eat it with icecream or on it's own.

Melissa
November 5th, 2006, 08:03 PM
Deb what you described would be jello to us.

I found this:

The difference among these spreads is largely one of consistency, and for the first three, standards are established by the Food and Drug Administration so consumers will know what they’re buying.

Jelly is a clear, bright product. It is generally made by cooking fruit juice and sugar with pectin as a jelling agent and lemon juice as an acid to maintain a consistent texture. Jelly is firm and will hold its shape (it “shakes”). Generally, jelly contains no pieces of fruit, although specialty jellies, like pepper jelly, may include pieces of jalapeño or other pepper.

Jam is made from crushed or chopped fruit cooked with sugar, and often pectin and lemon juice. Jam can be a purée of fruit or have a soft pulp, but it does not contain chunks of fruit.

Preserves are fruit cooked with sugar to the point where large chunks of fruit or whole fruit, such as berries, are suspended in a syrup base. The texture of preserves is not smooth like jelly or jam.

Marmalade is a soft jelly, often citrus-based, that includes both the flesh and peel of the fruit suspended throughout the jelly base. The bitterness of the peel offsets the sweetness of the jelly.

Conserve is a mixture of more than one fruit, often with added nuts and raisins, that is cooked until it becomes thick. It is used as a spread for breads, pastries and meats, and in the latter use is closest to chutney.

Chutney is a spiced condiment of Indian origin (chatni is the Hindi word for strongly spiced) made of fruit or vegetables. It is typically served as an accompaniment to food, not as a spread. The spice level can range from mild to hot, and the consistency from a fine relish to a preserve or conserve. Fruit chutney consists of chopped fruit, vinegar, spices and sugar cooked into a chunky sweet-tart-spicy mix: according to one explanation, it “blurs the Western distinction between preserves and pickles.”

Fruit Butter, such as apple butter or prune butter, is fruit purée or pulp combined with sugar, lemon juice and spices, slowly cooked down to a smooth consistency. The “butter” refers to its spreadability: there is no actual butter in the product.

Fruit Curd is a creamy spread made with sugar, eggs and butter, generally flavored with citrus juice and zest.

Fruit Spread is generally a reduced-calorie product made with fruit juice concentrate and low-calorie sweeteners replacing all or part of the sugar.

November 5th, 2006, 08:03 PM
Here that is jello, Deb, though I've never heard of eating it with ice cream!

I'm still baffled by the difference between jelly and jam, but I found this:

In jelly, the fruit comes in the form of fruit juice.
In jam, the fruit comes in the form of fruit pulp or crushed fruit (and is less stiff than jelly as a result).
In preserves, the fruit comes in the form of chunks in a syrup or a jam.

For me, I put PB on both pieces of bread and put the jelly in between.

Nichole
November 5th, 2006, 08:08 PM
I have to think about it, but I think put the PB on the left slice and the fruit spread (super chunky jam ;)) on the right, then smoosh together. Jackson prefers his PB sans J. ;)

MrsPeacefrog

PB on both side, jam (not jelly) on the right.

Yeah... Jam and jelly are similar, but jam has pieces of the fruit in it. It would definitely be the more popular of the two.

MrsPeacefrog
November 5th, 2006, 08:50 PM

I made Alex a PB&B today and now that I think about it, the PB was on the left. But I don't have the slightest idea if that is how I always do it. I always wipe the excess PB off the knife on the side that will receive the jelly, jam, preserves, honey or bananas.

Bev

November 5th, 2006, 09:20 PM
I put the PB on one side and the jelly/jam on top of it. I think wipe the knife off on the "clean" side of bread. That way the knife is cleaner for cutting the sandwich in half.

Amanda

MrsPeacefrog

I did see that Bev :awink:

Vegemite does have a bit of a salty taste to it, but it's a delicate balance, you can't throw it on as if it's PB, you need to lightly spread it over lots of butter and it's delish!

We we all grow up on it here so I guess we don't know any different :dunno:

Bev
November 5th, 2006, 09:26 PM
while i can only eat a sammich if it is cut *diagonally* ...
:fyi: That's because there is less crust that way! There is only crust on one side, not two!

Here that is jello, Deb, though I've never heard of eating it with ice cream!
:faint: You haven't?? It's good that way! Deb, Jello is a brand name that has become synonymous with the product of flavoured gelatin, so all flavoured gelatin is "Jello."

I'm okay with a little jelly in the pb but not the other way around. I do the jelly first & then wipe the knife on the "clean" piece of bread. Then the pb on the next piece of bread. I usually cut with a messy pb knife.

Speaking of Vegemite, which we were earlier, I recently read that it's been banned in the US b/c of the folate in it. I thought folate was good for you  (I really miss that little blue scratch head smilie, he was much better!) Anyway, you all don't know what you're missing! :snob:

Oh, PB on the left, preserves on the right.

OH MY! What a thread.

I don't really think when I'm making a sandwhich. We use peanut butter on one side and jelly on the other. We also like bananas in it (in addition to the pb&j). Carter has one every single day for lunch.

MMMM..........Nutella!

OK, our FDA (Food and Drug Admin) is a stupid group. They don't let in drugs that saved my daughter's life, but they allow TONS of crap in our foods that are HORRIBLE for your body! Doesn't make any sense to me! I don't know anything about the Veggemite (don't mean to offend if I've spelled it wrong).

As I was letting my 4 year old make her PBJ today, I realized that both of us always put the peanut butter on the right hand side, and the jelly on the left. Every time.

How do you make your PBJ?

Well, Janelle is a PBJ freak, so I make her a lot of pbj sandwiches. I put peanut butter on the left hand side and jelly on the right, and I always do the PB first then the J, then I cut it into triangles.

But DH says my pbj's are gross, so he makes his own with approximately a cm of peanutbutter and an inch thick layer of jelly.

If I'm making it for myself I toast the bread and then just peanutbutter or peanutbutter with sliced sour apples. I do NOT like jelly.

I heard about this on a scrapbook website. I thought that it was odd because the only articles confirming this were from Australia. I couldn't find a single article at that time from a US site. The articles said something about how it was the FDA that banned it. Okay, just found the info on Snopes & it looks like this was urban legend http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/vegemite.asp

PB on the right, jelly on top, and then put the left piece over top the right piece.

If I were to put the PB on the right and jelly on the left, I still think it's correct to put the left piece over the bread which would be messy  And to put the right piece over the left would just seem upside down :)
