View Full Version : At what age did your baby walk?

MrsPeacefrog
November 3rd, 2006, 07:22 AM
Well I am getting a bit jumpy, Jacob is 14 months tomorrow and is still not walking. He has only stood unaided for around 2 seconds.

I am trying not to freak out about it, but it's not easy, my other two were running by this stage so I just don't understand why Jacob has no interest in walking.

So I thought I would do a poll so I could either send myself into further mental anguish OR set my mind at ease over the broad spectrum of ages! :lol2:

For those with more than 1 child just answer for the one that walked the latest.

(that would work for this stat wouldn't it  )

Thanks guys.

Oh, and any stories would be welcome too :heee:

Both Cass and Paige were walking at about 10-11 months..

Aaron didn't fully walk until he was 13.5 (so I voted 14) months. He didn't even crawl until 10 months so I knew his gross motor was delayed a bit.

I voted 14 months in the poll because Brady was the latest. Both girls were walking well at 11 months. Brady took a teensy step at 13 months but then it was a few more weeks before he took another. I'm pretty sure he didn't stand on his own much either. But then at 14 months, he went from 3/4 steps to across the room pretty quickly. You know he's fine. He just wants you to worry about him. :)

Cami: EXACTLY. But you know I would feel alot better about things if he was showing some signs of walking, but I am not seeing them. So at 14 months it still feels like he has so long to go! I just don't know wether I should start bringing this up to the Dr or if I am overreacting and just let it takes it's course. I feel like an idiot even saying that, but all I keep thinking is that if there is a problem I would rather know straight away so we can start doing something about it to help him.

Mason walked about 10.5 months and Graham about 11.5 months or so. I answered 11 months for an average.

There are girls in my baby group whose babies aren't walking yet and they are older than Jacob.

Tylor walked at 8 months and Alyssa at 9. Both of the cruised at 5 months and that was really really hard. I would have given anything to keep them on their butt's a little while longer.

My friends daughter will be 17 months on the 11th and she has taken all of about 3 steps from time to time. They are not worried..She is number 5 of her kids and figures that Kingsley just likes to be carried..she has found it works for her  Kari is begging for her to just walk so she can finally stop dealing with the butt of her pants being worn out (She scoots and doesn't crawl) but she isn't really worried about the non walking..It will happen when she is ready!

Both kids were walking at 11 months...but I was just at the mall yesterday and there was a mother of an 18 month old there who wasn't walking, but their doctor wasn't concerned yet.

Alex didn't take his first steps until he was 15 months.....and didn't start crawling until 12 months. :) I was a little worried.....but in the end it's all okay. Someone in my MOM's club told me that by the time all our kids are 3, they'll be pretty much the same......no worries! :)

I voted 13 months and that was for Brayden. He was the latest as far as starting to walk. Maybe it's a 3rd child thing? The girls were both walking well before a year though. I wonder if it's just b/c they have their older siblings to get them stuff so they don't have to get up and walk to it, kwim? I'd not worry too much just yet, Deb. I'm sure that Jacob will be walking soon enough. :hug99:

Caleb was at 11 months, and Ahna at 13.

HOWEVER, if it makes you feel better Deb, a baby in Ahna's room could barely SIT UP at 11 months and she is now perfectly fine and normal (and walking). She just kind of went from 0-60 very fast.

I really think he'll be fine - I mean that girl in Ahna's class couldn't SIT UP!!!!!!! And now is fine!!!! All kids are different and I'm sure he'll do it soon and be just fine. :hug99:

Deb, is he pulling up & cruising holding on to furniture/etc?

Eliot didn't crawled until he was almost 9months, didn't walk until he was 13.5 months and didn't potty trained until after 3.5 yrs... some kids just like to take their good ol' time

I need multiple choices and a younger option.

Janelle was 8 1/2 months old, Kincaid was somwhere between 10 and 11 months and I feel like a horrible mom cause A. I don't remember when it was and B. I didn't write it down in his baby book either. I'm thinking it was right at 11 1/2 months, but dh says it was 10 1/2 months... :dunno:

For what it's worth my nephew is 6 months younger than Janelle and didn't walk till he was 18 months old... By the time they were 3 and 2 1/2 he was actually more advanced, gross motor skill wise, than Janelle was! So I don't think walking early/late means much in the long run. I also know that at least our ped told us walking is a skill that is normal between 9 months and 18 months...which is a HUGE range for normal...they don't consider it "early walking" unless it happens before 9 months and they don't consider it a delay unless it happens after 18 months.

Josh walked at 8 months..Austin was probably 12 months.

Rayna at 13 months. My nephew didn't start until he was 18 months. He is 9 now and freakin brilliant. A total joy to be around. So, you are all good Deb. :hug99:

Gavin walked at 11 months, but Jackson didn't walk until 14 months. I was worried too, but he caught up just fine. I'm sure Jacob will do it soon. :hug99: He's probably just trying to milk the whole "I sit here and people wait on me and pick me up; why should I bother moving myself?" thing.

Two of Amelia's cousins were late to walk. Both would be considered hyperflexible like Amelia. One didn't walk until 15 months. She is now 10 years old. Completely normal (well, I say she might be above normal). She held her own in competitive gymnastics until she decided that it was too stressful.

Deb, this is what I wrote in Brady's journal (his bday is Nov 26)

Dec 23: He’s still not walking. No interest at all. He’ll stand for a few seconds but not often. At his one year check, the dr checked that he could put weight on his legs/feet (he does) and checked reflexes on the bottom of his feet (fine).

Dec 30: Counted this as his first step today. He took one very tiny step (more like a shuffle!) but no steps after that.

Jan 22: He'll take 2-3 steps between things. He's finally showing some willingness to walk. (I also noted: said "map" while he was watching a Dora video)

Jan 31: He walked all over the room today. He can stand as long as he wants to.

So it must have come up in his one year check and you see what the doctor did. His next appt was at 15 months and he was walking all over by then.

Maggie took one unaided step on her 1st birthday but didn't actually walk unaided until she was 16mos.

I didn't vote b/c I didn't know which kid to vote for.

Cole walked right around 10 months old, and Maia did right at 12 months.

I've heard of lots of kids who don't start walking until Jacob's age.

Sarah walked at 17 1/2 months. She only started crawling at 15 months, and that was with physical therapy.

Thanks for the reassurance. As I said my logical brain says that he is fine and not to worry, but it's human nature to be a little concerned. Don't get me wrong I am not freaking out and thinking about it 24/7 but I get sick of the comments "He isn't walking, YET?" argh!

I can't help but wonder if my NY celebrations when I didn't know I was pregnant with him did any damage  I was 6-7 weeks pregnant by the time I found out and it was over the festive season and we did alot of drinking and partying and I guess I have always felt guilty about that

Riley was 11 months, but I had a coworker whose daughter didn't walk until 16 months. But her daughter spoke a lot earlier than Riley. I've heard some kids focus on certain aspects at a time. :dunno: They all catch up eventually.

Patrick walked for the first time a week before his first Birthday. Christopher didn't walk until he was 14 months old. Nathan will be a year old in two weeks and the jury is still out on whether he will walk before then. He will stand on his own for minutes at a time but when he wants to move on to another place he drops to his knees and crawls. I still think that he will most likely take a step before his first Birthday.

Jacob is a perfectly normal, perfectly healthy boy. Do not beat yourself up about something you can't do anything about!

You don't want to know how much I drank before I realised that I was pg with Emily, and as you know she is beautiful and brilliant and talented etc etc  That has nothing to do with it!

I voted 12 months cause Emily didn't walk till a week or so after her 1st birthday. Embarrassingly enough, I don't remember when the boys started walking, but I think they were both walking at their first birthday parties, so they were a bit earlier.

Anyway, I don't think you have any need to be concerned. Jacob is just a little peanut who likes being carried :)

:tantrum: BUT I WANNA BE A DRAMA QUEEN! NO FAIR!! I can't be now cause I have been called on it! :lol2:

I know I know I know! as I said my logical brain says it's all fine, but there is this tiny little portion of my brain that says 'hmmm'

Okay I am going to force myself to get over it! he will walk in his own time!

Actually Darcy has a point, he does have alot of vocab for his age and does alot of signs etc which my other two never did.

Deb, does he cruise and walk with a cart to hold onto? If it is just a matter of letting go I don't think it is a problem. Maybe he is just afraid if he lets go his brothers will knock him down.

MrsPeacefrog
November 6th, 2006, 05:36 PM
Yes he cruises along furniture, he also walks with his push toy. He will also walk if you hold one hand. He just won't do it letting go. He doesn't really stand unaided either, he has done it in spurts, but not for long periods of time, a max of about 5 seconds

Emma was a really late walker. She didn't walk until she was 21 months old. I was very stressed about it. 2 Days after I finally got an appointment with the specialist she took her first steps.

I *think* she was walking full-time around 10 months. I just remember she was full-on crawling around 8 months and it was about 2 months after that.

I know it's hard to not worry about it, but enjoy it. Once they start walking, there's no stopping them--like I have to remind you of that, though! You have other kids to help you remember that. :)

Maggie was 13 months but Will was 16 months. He took his first step at 14 months but then would not walk at all while I was in the hospital, a week after I came home he started walking and hasn't stopped since! (He just didn't want his momma to miss it!)

:love1: Brandi.

Well walking or not he is into everything anyway, he has crawling down to an art, and he pulls up on everything and can even climb :errr: I find him ontop of the kids shelves, boxes, up on the coffee table.

The boys have been walking him over the last few days. They hold both his hands and walk him up and down the hallway. He is getting good at keeping up with them. I think it's giving him leg strength, we will see how he goes.

Hooray, Jacob! I meant to post in this thread when you first started it, but of course, couldn't get on for long enought to post!!! He'll be independently walking and into everything within a couple of weeks I bet. Caroline walked at 10.5 months... Tatum at 11 months... Courtney did not walk until after we had Tatum!! She was at least 20 months before she took any independent steps and really was not fully walking until 21 months... but she walks fine. And the ped basically would not have referred her for PT until at least 18 months because of the huge range of normal walking age... Jacob is well within it. :)

TtownAnne
November 9th, 2006, 10:40 AM
Caroline didn't walk until two days shy of 14 months (and didn't even scoot an inch until she was almost 9 months old). But the benefit I found to that was that she almost immediately was walking full-time and being quite steady on her feet instead of that traditional "step-step-fall" routine that some kids do.

in my experience all children want to do it on their own terms and time. my 1st son walked at 10 months, my 2nd at 14 months and we're still waiting on our 3rd but there's no rush ...my third seems to be in a hurry to grow up though. he was sitting up at 5 months and craawling at 6 he's 8months now. i enjoy watching them doing do it for the first time though.
