Hm, I can't think of an odd food off the top of my head, but I have an odd food combination that I really like: scrambled eggs with ketchup. I've eaten my scrambled eggs that way since I was a kid. :lick:
(I also eat them with salsa or hot sauce, but I like them with ketchup the best.)

Oh we eat ketchup on eggs too.
You'll all flip (Karri's head may explode quicker than Sheila's from the Random thread...) when I announce that I used to eat Vienna Sausage and Miracle Whip sandwiches on white bread. :lick:

They sell fried pickles at places here and in Louisiana too. Not at all places, but if you know where to look you can find them. :) They are so good.
I like crawfish. I don't think it's an odd food at all, but I know many do. (I don't suck the heads.)

Sonic was selling fried pickles here last year. (I didn't try them though.)
Stacey, no head sucking? ;)

I too like fried pickles, and I put ketchup on my scrambled eggs...
The weirdest thing I can think of is this stuff called "Monkey Meat" that my college roommate's grandmother used to make. It is a "salad" made with bologna, mayo and sweet pickles...it is all chopped up kind of like Ham salad or something. My friend came back to school from Christmas vaca one year with a big tupperware of it, and after a night of drinking, a monkey meat sandwich on wonder bread really hit the spot.

that reminds me of my roommate who came back from home one time w/ a jar of peanut butter/bacon/mayo mix. OMG :errr: she'd eat the spread on wonder bread and we'd all stare at her in wonder and think, "freak"

I like Tartar, but haven't had it in years since it is not so safe to eat. It's raw extremely lean ground beef with raw egg, lots of onions, just pepper and salt.......add to a slice of bread.

Yeah Bridget and Silke!! Let's have dinner soon!! :lick:

Anytime  In Germany when you buy a whole chicken, the internals are in a small plastic bag inside (heart, liver, kidneys, also the neck)....yum..............or you can just buy it separate in bulk.

Silke, the entrails are still in turkeys here... and you can still get chickens that way (my favorite is the heart :heee: )
Mary, I've eaten tripe on quite a few occasions. On its own, not my fave, but in soup or porridge it's OK.

There is one other thing. The gills of the fish are a delicasse. The fish is mostly served with head in Germany.

Heart? HEART?! Bridget...I dont think that comes in all birds. I remember being commissioned to make a turkey the first year we had a house and hosted t-giving. I may be blockin it out, but there wasnt all that shit in there.
Can I ask...how do you (general) get past the "i am eating xxx" to enjoying that stuff

We call that Sandwhich fill. Mom makes it all the time. I am not a fan of it but they love it.
Right now the only think I can think of that most people thing is gross is that I love to dip my fries in Mayo (I know..heart attach waiting to happen). I love this with Chick-fil-A fries!

Karri, some brands remove the inside crap before they package it.
My husband hates to even see a whole cooked turkey/chicken/etc. He prefers to have it pre-cut and pretend it's not a real animal.

I do like pickled bologny, though
And, I think deep-fried pickles are dee-lish! :lick:

my mom teases me to this day ... about when i made my first furkey ... i was on the phone with her getting step-by-step instructions ... i had rubber gloves on ... and remember asking her "what kinda person thinks to cut parts of the turkey off and shove it up it's butt ... that's wrong!"

I have never cleaned or baked a turkey yet... to tell you the truth I'm not looking forward to it (ever!!) since I don't even like the smell of uncooked chicken :dead: I have to buy frozen parts (mostly breast) somehow those don't smell as bad when thawed out :dunno:

Three part answer/comment:
Sorry Karri I figured I'd gross you out for all time.
I think we always make sure to buy the birds "with" giblets so that's how we get them.
As for "getting past it" it's just like having your kid puke on you (OK bad analogy)... it's just mind over matter.
In some cases, it's less mind over matter than a total reliance on politeness (so as not offend the maker of said weird food). I am a pretty adventuresome eater, so I'm willing to try anything (important to my husband's family). Generally what you find is that the food tastes fine, it just sounds/looks weird or gross. Sometimes it's also a case of getting used to a new type of flavors or texture. Some things you have to learn to like... but it can be done!
I have to say that regular tripe (i.e., not in a soup or porridge) -- not my favorite. I also do not like this weird soup made out of bamboo that I call "witch finger soup". It stinks and it tastes stinky too.
I also do not like chocolate. Maybe the lack of the chocolate gene makes it easier to eat bizarre stuff.
My husband had to eat scorpions once and also duck foot soup and those were both :puke: according to him.

Oh man Mary, nothing nastier than menudo. :puke: Everyone here raves about it's ability to get rid of hangovers though.

Urgh, menudo. :dead: If you walk into a little Mexican market on weekend mornings, there's always a little cauldron of that stuff bubbling away. :puke:
My granny loves turkey necks! Every Thanksgiving, she calls dibs on the neck and we're all "hey, have at it, granny!"

I love crawfish and I'm not remotely Southern!
I get a bit grossed out by "scary sounding" food so I don't think I eat too much that's weird....
My husband LOVES gefilte fish which is the nastiest substance in the world.

Not weird to me but I like calamari aka squid grilled not deep fried with breading, octopus, tentacles and all and snails actually periwinkles(smaller version of snails) my mom makes them in a wine garlic "sauce" that is to die for..I was eating them since I was 3  I love mussels but won't touch a raw oyster if my life depended on it :puke:

I think the biggest reason people in southern Louisiana like seafood is b/c it's actually very good there. It's fresh, and it tastes damn good. I have had bad seafood, and I understand why some people don't like it if they've only ever had bad seafood.

Bridget - guess I'll just go on offending people
Chris's entire consulting group knows about me and my "eating habits." The person who plans their little parties wanted to do a brazilian steakhouse and Chris was like, "dude...no way. wife won't even set foot in there. She'd vomit." I couldn't even smile and nod
