View Full Version : Keeping track of hats, gloves, mittens

We've only had about a week of cold weather and already my son has lost his hat and one of his gloves at some point during the school day. He takes the bus to and from school and is in all-day kindergarten, so that's two recesses plus time outside at lunch. Plenty of time for a 5-year-old to lose track of things.
Is there anything I can do to help him hold on to his hat and gloves (other than talk to him about being responsible from his things which we've done several times). I remember when I was little we had these clips that attached our mittens to our coat sleeves. Do they still make those? Any other ideas? Or should I just stock up on hats and gloves for the winter and hope for the best?:crossfing

Yes, they DO still make the mitten clips! I last saw them at Sears. And I save on the whole hat issue by buying coats with hoods. :dunno:

Not sure about mittens, but can you label his hats with his name so atleast those will hopefully be returned to you?

Another idea is to stick a piece of velcro on the insides of the mittens (so it's not shown) and the hat and then another piece to his coat. Then you can have him attach them all together so he can keep track of them. Maybe also inside his backpack you can do the same thing.
Instead of mitten clips I've seen parents sew long pieces of yarn to the ends of the mittens and also to the tag of the coat. When the coat is on the mittens get threaded through the arms and then stay on and attached.

My suggestion as well. I remember that long string on my mittens as a kid and I'll actually probably do that with DD's this winter.

They don't allow cords or drawstrings at Mason's school. Strangling hazards. I like Lynn's velcro idea (Tiger's Fan for you Audrey! :) )
So far we haven't lost any but I am trying to teach him to put the gloves and neck-warmer in his hat and then the hat either in the backpack or his coat sleeve.
If all else fails, our local Dollar Store sells polar fleece hats and mitts and neckwarmers all winter long.

Thanks for the ideas! We did find the hat yesterday, but we've been using his hood the past few days so I think we'll stick with that for now (and keep the hat for when he's playing outside at home).
I think I'll try the string idea for the gloves. I'm afraid he'd start playing with the clips, take them off and then lose those too! I'll have to check with his school to see if the string would be a problem.
Good to know the Dollar Store has hats and mittens. I never would have thought to check there.
Go Tigers!!

We put Riley's gloves inside of his hat and then put that little bundle in his coat sleeve. We've never lost a set like that!
