View Full Version : Rash!
Angelina October 15th, 2006, 01:16 PM Help! It's Sunday and our Ped's office is closed and it's not an issue for ER.
My DD is 6 months old and Tuesday, I believe, she's got some weird spots on her left tushie side, 5 or 6 of them, just like a rash or something, like the acnes. I thought she need more "no diaper" time, so she was with no diaper for a while. It did not help her rash. And Desitin and Triple paste did not help.
But today she had no diaper for 3 hours, then I put one on, and her spots (1/8 of an inch in diameter) started to bleed! I put peroxide on them, but WHAT IS GOING ON?!
MamaGoofy October 15th, 2006, 01:53 PM Even though your pedi office is closed do they have a dr on call or is there an after hours place you could call and see if you need to bring her in? does she seem to be in discomfort???? I have never seen that before...
marcy October 15th, 2006, 02:15 PM Maybe yeast diaper rash?

MamaGoofy October 15th, 2006, 02:20 PM Marcy that is a great article!!!
Angelina October 15th, 2006, 03:24 PM Yes, they have a doc on hold and they charge 15 or 25 dollars for a call "after hours". And all this doc might say will be "Take her in tomorrow", I am sure, or will advice to go to ER if I worry too much.
Maybe it's yeast infection rash, I hope it is not strep or something. Allergy? She's on the breast milk, have never had any yet. She doesn't eat any solids yet (had some apple sauce and did not like it). She's got her shots Wednesday (and it's her second shot, she's fine, no fever)
It doesn't seem to bother her, but it really bothers me! it looks terrible! It's getting worse and worse.
marcy October 15th, 2006, 04:38 PM When Anya had it, it didn't bother her. And we never took her in - when we first called the office about it, they thought it was just a diaper rash. When it didn't go away and we called again, they said it sounded like yeast diaper rash. Anya's started out as individual pimple looking things, got more, and then they merged together. Let us know what you find out, poor baby.
Did you eat anything different in the past few days that the baby might be reacting to?
Angelina October 15th, 2006, 04:43 PM Did you eat anything different in the past few days that the baby might be reacting to?
All the same food. :gah: Seems like it really doesn't bother her AT ALL, even when I touch it with peroxide (to wipe some). Hubby suggested hydrocortisone, but I am not sure if I can use it with 6 months old.
Angelina October 15th, 2006, 04:56 PM And it bugs me, she's coughing. It's a dry cough, not a barking sound, like she has too much saliva, and it only happens when she's laying on her back.
And I have no experience with rash, my son have never had any.
MamaGoofy October 15th, 2006, 05:10 PM You could whip up some cornstarch and water and paste it on her hinney...it should hold her over until tomorrow. Good luck!! I can't beleive your pedi charges for an "oncall dr call".. that's just retarded.....
AmyP October 15th, 2006, 05:51 PM You may also want to try Stef's method. Mix equal parts Maalox and Aquaphor (both are over the counter at any pharmacy, Aquaphor is a rash cream) and put it on her. The Maalox neutralizes any acid in her urine while the Aquaphor protects her skin. It works on Sarah every time. It's a pain to mix, but it's worth it because it makes her feel so much better. I only use it on really bad rashes. Otherwise, I use A&D ointment. Balmex and Boudreaux's Butt Paste don't seem to work on her, but A&D does.
Hope this helps.
Bev October 15th, 2006, 07:57 PM :fyi: I wouldn't use peroxide on a person! St. John's Ambulance no longer uses or recommends using hydrogen peroxide because it kills/burns the healthy cells as it is disinfecting the bad ones. They use running water or soap and water to clean wounds now. At least that was the recommendation at the last first aid training I was on.
I like the suggestions the others made. :)
Karri October 15th, 2006, 11:50 PM Thanks for clearing that up, Bev...I was wondering about the peroxide thing. I've never heard of that!!!
Norah's had some doozy rashes...both rash and yeast. The maalox/aquaphor mix works well for a rash. If you don't see improvement w/ that in 48 hours, then I'd guess it's yeast.
Bev October 16th, 2006, 08:30 AM Karri, my course was, I admit, some time ago but I remembered this and it made sense to me because hydrogen peroxide always hurt like hell and I guess it was because not only was it killing bacteria it was killing good cells too.
Angelina October 16th, 2006, 11:45 AM She's better. Her rash is almost gone (it's dry and pink instead of bright red). Thanks for advice! I just put lots of Desitin and gave her tons of "no diaper" time.
I plan to buy her cloth diapers.
marcy October 16th, 2006, 11:53 AM Glad to hear that!
emzkee October 16th, 2006, 12:22 PM Glad to hear that the tush is feeling better.
We have the EXACT same problem. Ella had what even looked like burn marks on her tush and each diaper change was horrific. She was in so much pain. Doctor said that when a rash is this bad, not to use hydrocortisone as it is a steroid and can cause further damage.
The doctor ruled out yeast infection, but suggested the following treatment:
1) 3x a day, let her soak in warm water with baking soda to sooth the pain.
2) Dry tush (we actually use a blow dryer on the cool setting--she loves it) and apply a mixture of Penatin and Triple butt paste
The rash isn't getting any worse, but hasn't really dried yet. We're on day 3. If it doesn't get any better by tonight, I'm making another call to my doctor.
MamaGoofy October 16th, 2006, 12:50 PM Glad to hear her hinney is feeling better!
Chantal October 16th, 2006, 02:25 PM Back when Kaitlyn was a baby, and even now, with Lauren - we use Canesten cream on their bums until we can get into see the Dr. for a hydrocortizone cream.
Typically, if the bum is getting red and spotty, we slather on our diaper cream that contains 40% zinc (most carry 15%) and that seems to help.
But if the cream isnt working (which seems to coincide with teething), then we get the prescription cream - and also set aside the diaper wipes. Those suckers BURN the baby's bum when they have a bad rash - so we end up using the "bum cloths" (face cloths designated specifically for wiping bums) for a few days too.
Suzi October 16th, 2006, 03:46 PM Hubby suggested hydrocortisone, but I am not sure if I can use it with 6 months old.
You CAN use hydrocortisone on a 6 month old. Julia had BLEEDING diaper rashes for the better part of a year and we used 1% hydrocortisone OINTMENT (not the cream since the ointment provides even better moisture barrier) and any 40% zinc oxide diaper cream with every diaper change.
You could whip up some cornstarch and water and paste it on her hinney...
Unless you are ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY SURE that a rash is not yeast NEVER put cornstarch on it. If you put cornstarch on a yeast infection, the yeast population will EXPLODE since yeast feeds on cornstarch.
Angelina October 16th, 2006, 08:43 PM I've used Triple Paste (a lot) on her. And I will not use any wipe cloths anymore, just take her to the bathroom, wash and let her dry.
But she's coughing...a lot. No fever. Sleeping and eating fine. Playing as usual. Could it be the reaction to the shots?
Lyoshka October 18th, 2006, 01:35 AM Angelina, no advice here, and it seems you have it all figured out by now, anyhow. Just wanted to say I'm glad Angelica's bum is doing better and you are not worried sick anymore! Bednaya kisa malenkaya!

What type of shots?
I asked my Dr. if her rash was from her recent Chicken Pox/Measle shots and he said no. That would be a body rash, rather than one isolated to that area.

DTaP. No measles and chickenpox yet.
Angelina October 20th, 2006, 11:17 AM OK, the rash is gone but her cough got worse. She hardly can breathe thru it. Plus some head ticks started (she moves her head left and right fast, fast). It all started after the shots. I am taking her to the doctor, waiting for his call. I am scared.

I hope everything is okay. YES call Dr. immediately!
Angelina October 20th, 2006, 12:16 PM I am still waiting for him to return my call. It's been more than 1 and a half hour now.
Angelina October 20th, 2006, 12:55 PM OK, he called and said it's probably a cold she's got at the office during her last check up (more than a week ago). He asked me my CVS give him a call and he will prescribe her some medicine for her cough (nothing about the ticks she's having) and if that doesn't stop thru the weekend then he wants to see her.
Some medicine...I don't know the name, he said it should help but will make her very sleepy? It's by prescription only. What's that? I don't feel comfortable giving my 6 mo something that makes her sleepy... IMO
Bev October 20th, 2006, 03:54 PM How old is she Angelina? Graham moves his head back and forth really fast a lot but he's doing it to make himself dizzy.

Rachel is 6 months old, 6 and a half. I am thinking about having some MRI done, if she doesn't stop doing it, it freaks me a lot. She does it like 4-5 times a day, when she's sleepy but can't fall askeep on her own or just restless.
