View Full Version : Should I take my goddaughter to this?

I wasn't exactly sure where to put this, but it's regarding an almost 8-year-old and somewhat school-related.
Anyway, my goddaughter's 8th birthday is in two weeks and this morning I saw an advertisement on TV for Disney on Ice Princess Wishes. She's a total Disney Princess freak and I think she'd absolutely love the show! The problem is the only night I can get decent seats for cheap is a Wednesday night, which is obviously a school night.
My goddaughter is a good student, and generally a good kid. This show would keep her up past her bedtime, though. I am going to ask her mother if it's okay with her before I get the tickets (which I'd do no matter what night it was).
Would you allow your daughter to go to this show in these circumstances? Would it be a better idea to spend the extra money for another show we can attend on a weekend?
We're talking $37.50 for the school night show versus $49.50 for the weekend show for the same seats. That, and I usually don't spend that much on my goddaughter (even the $37.50 is a tad more than I usually spend on her). If I went with the weekend show, that would also be her Christmas gift probably. I may give her something very small for Christmas, but the show would be her main gift.

How much past her bedtime would it be? If we're talking half an hour or so, then go for it. If we're talking 2 hours, then no. I know what my kid is like if she's up too late, and I imagine it's not too different for an 8-year old!
And on a related note, I need a link for this because have heard nothing about it and I know my own little princess would like to go!

Anne, it's at First Mariner Arena. Just go to www.ticketmaster.com.
I'm not sure how much past her bedtime it will be because I don't even know when her bedtime is! I'd suppose maybe an hour or so? Heck, she can even spend the night at my house if she wants and I can take her to school in the morning (it's barely ten minutes from my house). That's assuming my DH doesn't mind, but I doubt he would.

On rethinking it, I say go on a weekend. It's rough for kids to be up past their bedtime, especially when they have to go to school the next day.

I have to say that I first would talk to her mother. I took Alyssa to the show. SHE LOVED IT...it was fantastic and well worth the money. We paid a lot because we got rink side seats!!! I think that it would be ok. Tylor would have done fine and he would have just slept in the car on the ride home had it been late. I think that if it is one time deal (she isn't up late every night) that she would be fine. Like I said..ask the mom but I would do it!

I took Natascha to a Hilary Duff concert last year. She was up way past her bed time. I had already planned not to send her to school next day, so I had taken a day off from work.
I would probably go for the weekend if you could get good seats. The Hilary Duff concert was only one night in town, so that didn't give us any choice.
gulp!

I'd ask her mom, too, like you already said you would do, but I don't think that it would be that big of a deal to go midweek. Especially for a special event like this one.

I think asking her mom for a one time special birthday treat that will keep her up past her bedtime is ok. I mean, it isn't like you are asking to schedule something late at night as a regular thing. :dunno:

If her mom is ok with it, I would do the school night. at that age, I think she would do fine adjusting to staying up a bit later that night.

I talked to her mom, and she agreed that I can take her on opening night. I just ordered the tickets, and I think she's going to love it! Of course between ticket expenses, parking fees, etc., that's probably going to be her Christmas present as well. I might get her something really small, like a little Christmas ornament, but that would be it.

Thanks, I'll tell everyone how it goes. Her birthday is the 20th and the show is November 1. I think, if her mom agrees to it, I'll just tell her I'm taking her somewhere for a special surprise on November 1 for her birthday and Christmas gift. I won't tell her what we're doing until we get there.

We just got back from the show. Caytlin loved it! I didn't tell her what we were doing and waited for her to figure out. I made sure she couldn't see our ticket stubs. She still had no idea when we sat down until the announcer said, "Ladies and Gentleman, boys and girls, Disney On Ice will be starting in 5 minutes." She was SO excited!!
We both really enjoyed the show and she loved her surprise. Her favorite princess is Belle, so she enjoyed that part quite a bit. I even broke down and got her a snowball with a princess cup she could keep. I wasn't going to, but I offered to buy her food and she saw that and I wasn't going to say no. :dunno:
I will say this trip to the arena was one heck of a lot easier than when I took Sarah to Sesame Street Live. At least Caytlin can walk and doesn't require a stroller or car seat.
And we weren't back much past her bedtime. She was dozing off in the car a little. She goes to bed at 9:30 and we left the arena at 9:20. We walked in the door of my house at 10.
