Scary letter came home today from our school. Please pray to keep these schools safe. One is where my son goes and the other is where Kara's son Goes. Not only that but I live right by the high school as does my parents and many good friends!

Dear Parents
A caller from the Columbiana Area called the Salem Police Department last night stating "Something is going to take place at one of the following schools-Lisbon, Salem, Leetonia, Columbiana, or Crestview in 76 hours and 14 minutes. You figure it out."

Doing the math means that the "event" would be scheduled to occure approximately 2am this Friday Morning. While this is a non-specific treat against a relatively non-specific target, I want to assure you that we are working closely with the police department to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

We have asked maintenance staff to monitor the exteriors of the buildings and grounds while custodial staff will regularly patrol the interiors of the buildings in an effort to ensure nothing out of the ordinary occurs. The rest of the staff will be vigilant as ever. As a parent myself of students in this District, I knew you'd want to know what's happening.

As a reminder, we have no school scheduled this Friday as our staff will be receiving intern service training.

Sincerly,
xxxx xxxxx
Superintendent of Schools

Kara's son Josh is at Lisbon and Tylor is at Salem. My Uncle and Cousin are both Custodial staff at the salem schools. I know that know children will be in any of these schools at the time of the "Event" however my Uncle and Cousin could very well be

Holy man! I hope it was an empty threat....a stupid joke or something and not really something serious. That isnt cool! :hug99:

:errr: I hope it's just a fake Jayne. How scary. :(

On the news they also said the person making the call was told he would be hurt by another male if he didn't do as he said...
So I'm praying that person will somehow come forward...

Its so scary...

Wow, guys. I can't imagine. :( I really hope that it's a cruel hoax, or that the authorities figure out what's going on.

Holy crap. :( Jayne and Kara - :hug99: I'm so sorry you guys have to go through this fear and worry with your kids. At least you can be reasonably sure that they won't be hurt if something does happen.....but you don't want anything to happen to the school in any case.

I agree with the others - I hope it's just a big (sick) joke and whoever is behind it gets the book thrown at them.

Isn't it scary what the reality of our time is. Why should things like this even happen. I mean seriously. There wouldn't have ever been anything like this happen when we were school age. This is just awful. It is so hard to believe we are raising our children in this kind of world. I too hope and pray that this is just some prank but you can never be to careful.

I think that if I have to deal with this with Tylor..what will come with Alyssa :gah:

Yes, it is scary! We used to have fire drills. Now we have "Lockdown" and "evacuation" drills. Our classrooms have "portable toilets", in case we are locked down for a long time.

Wow..I've never heard of that either...

We got a letter today..stating what was said in the call..and what our school officials are doing...
I'm still leery of sending him to school Friday but should I be considering the time is 2am???? I don't know what to do.

No, they didn't.

I remember when I was in high school (my senior year, IIRC), we had a bomb threat. They didn't evacuate *OR* let the teachers know what was going on. All we knew was that there were cops/dogs/sheriff's deputies searching all over the school while we were in classes. . . .turned out to be my brother's ex-girlfriend who called in the threat :errr:

Emily was telling me about evacuation and lockdown drills the other day. I asked her what lockdown was and she said "it's for when someone bad comes into the school and we have to hide from them" :(

Wow that is really scary. I can't imagine what we'll be facing when Catherine reaches school age. :hide:

The credit union I used to work at here on base used to get bomb threats all the time and we'd have to evacuate. They happened so frequently that they were not taken seriously (by us, not base security).

Melissa

I'd still send the kids to school. Since the beginning of schools there have been threats, since the advance of caller ID, the idiots are just finding other ways to give these threats without being caught. Normally it would be a student who wanted to get out of a test or something calling in the threat and the test would be called off. OR pulling the fire-alarm.

When I was teaching we had all kinds of threats, written in bathrooms, notes in the office, etc.... that's all they are 99.9% of the time. The fact that the note specified 2a.m. just justifies that the person who wrote the note is an idiot, wouldn't someone want to have a threat "go off" during the school day? with it being 2a.m. that means the kid doesn't know basic math.

I know it is hard to not worry about it, but I really wouldn't. :hug99:

We had a few bomb threats and one columbine esq threat when I was in school, all turned out to be false, but that's still scary!

Actually we had something similar like this happen when I was in primary school. I think that these things still happened but due to the climate we are in these days the reaction to it is heightened (and justly so)

Wow, Joan. I've never heard of the portable toilets in case of a lockdown. :(

I know! In May, the school provided each classroom with a big 5 gallon bucket, a box of kitty litter, and a roll of TP. Told us it was part of our new safety plan.

Now that is just weird but what ever keeps you safe!

I agree that most of the threats are just a threat because a child wants out of school. That note was written my our Super by the way. the threat actually came by a phone call!

Salem doesn't have school on Friday but I am guessing the other schools do. I am not getting all worried about it because I don't want to scare the kids. Tylor is at school today and if he had school tomorrow would also be there. I have talked to my Uncle (Head Custodian at Salem) and he said they have done all sorts of checks and rechecks at the schools and he is not worried. Makes me feel much better that he is not afraid. I think tonight will roll over like every other night.

And people wonder why I choose to homeschool. Threats like that happen quite often in this area. Children shouldn't have to know what a lockdown drill is. They should feel secure not scared at school.

Really? I only think I hear about 2 or 3 a year, and there are so many freakin schools that I figure that's not bad...but now you have me scared, how often?

The most recent ones that I am aware of were in the northern suburbs. I know last year the schools in our district were on lockdown because of a bank robbery in the area. Parents had to go pick their children up from school. And personally, imo, 2 or 3 or 20 is 2 or 3 or 20 too many no matter the number of schools in the area. I know the high school in our district has a police officer there every single day because I see them as I drive by. I don't drive by the elementary or the middle schools so I can't say if they are there or not. We have some parents in our church that have recently pulled their children out of the public schools and have decided to homeschool because of different things and one of them is the police in the schools and the possibilities of threats.

Our high school has a retention officer (cop) as well, but that isn't abnormal in America anymore. I remember our school being locked down when I was in junior high b/c a guy escaped from the county jail. . . I remember a similar incident when I was in sixth grade. . .it happens everywhere. I would venture to say that the likelihood of being mugged/robbed/burglarized is about equal to having a threat to your school :dunno:

That may very well be. Again, this is only one of the reasons we are homeschooling. We also live in a neighborhood where there are a lot of people who stay home. I do not go out alone with the kids after dark or even by myself without my husband and our doors are locked all day when he isn't at home. But then, I don't allow my children to be upstairs (ground level) by themselves while I am doing laundry or cleaning downstairs. They have to go downstairs with me but their play area is down there so they are there most of the time anyway.

Jayne just called me and they have arrested an 18 year old student from the town where the calls were made and one of the schools on the list. Jayne heard he is in a treatment facility. I will post the info if we get any more.

Yea, I grew up in the middle of nowhere in northern mid michigan (farwell...it's in clare county, about a half hour north of mt. pleasant...) and we had a police officer at our high school in 94-98... I just figure thats normal.
