View Full Version : What's in the packed lunch?

Cami
September 11th, 2006, 07:22 AM
I thought we might get some new ideas if we posted what we packed for our kids' lunches each day, kind of like the dinner thread. Anyone up for that?

ham and cheese sandwich, cut into triangles
apple
raspberries
yogurt
carrot sticks

You can see why I need some ideas.

ps, if this is better in the "food" forum, please move. :)

1 tetra vanilla milk shake
1 yogurt drink

Lisa, is the squiggle kind of mush like applesauce? Thanks for the links  I have seen that Nutella before at the store but I wasn't sure what it was until now.

Nutella...oh man, you don't know what you are missing  The original is even better...the US version tastes a bit different.

Natascha's lunch or better brunch...they have lunch at 10:30
Pigs in a blanket (turkey hot dog and cheese baked inside croissant)
Cucumbers
For treat: Mini croissant with nutella
Fruit cup

No the Squiggle is just a squiggly shaped fruit snack( not additives/preservitive type of fruit snack though ;) )

Nutella Kicks ass! :lick: I loooooove it! even better with peanut butter, it's just like a reese sandwich

Peanutbutter Crackers (this interchanges with a peanut butter sandwhich)

Yogurt
Pretzels
Milk
Peanut Butter on crackers
Turkey/cheese
Turkey Hot Dog
cheese stick (almost forgot that one)

For the girls:

Yogurt

Peanut butter on crackers

I only send snacks, Mason is a half day JK.

grape tomatoes
cracker/cookie thingys (PC Funshine crackers)
grapefruit juice

They have snack sometime between 12:50 and 3:10 when school is basically over.

Tomorrow he has a container of
craisins, raisins, dried blueberries and a few chocolate chips
drink
something else

gulp!
September 11th, 2006, 03:54 PM
Emma's lunch today was:

salami slices rolled up (sometimes she asks for a sandwich, instead)
cheese
yogurt drink
strawberries
tortilla chips (or rice crackers, or goldfish)

I also throw carrots or celery in there instead of a fruit. If we have some, she likes to have cold leftover pasta with a little parmesan cheese on it.

We can't have anything with nuts, which stinks b/c her 2 favorite foods are PBJ and granola bars.

LISA
September 11th, 2006, 04:17 PM
So much for the cupcake/Spiderman theory  the muffin came back...squished! which is why she didn't eat it :lol:Oh and I forgot I packed baby carrots( she didn't eat them all but some  ) and she didn't eat her pudding because her teacher told her she didn't have time :dunno:

For lunch the kids usually get:

turkey and cheese sandwich
apple slices
yogurt
water

Other things that get substituted or sent for snack are:
banana
grapes
raisins
apple sauce
pretzels

Maia's in a totally nut-free room this year, and Cole's is supposed to be nut-free on Wednesdays. Last year they got PB&J sandwiches sometimes, but that's out this year.

Julie-
I think I've asked you this before, but I can't remember the answer. Do you have to do dairy? Or is it just meat free?
When Aidan went to the JCC last summer, I could do anything, as long as it was meat-free. So as his 'main' dish, I'd do a cold pasta salad w/ some diced veggies and parm on it, assorted cold veggies and ranch dressing for dip, half a bagel w/ cream cheese, zucchini-carrot bread, sliced cheese and triscuits, and then I'd pack a fruit, a yogurt, and a water bottle.

Silke, she'll eat this cold (or room temp)? Somehow it just seems like it should be hot! :freak3: I might try this if I can find bread dough.

My kids have pretty much the same thing every day.

Emily:
Vegemite sandwich
apple
strawberries
crackers/gogurt or muesli bar
packet of Tiny Teddies (little chocolate cookies)

Harry:
Peanut butter sandwich
apple sauce
crackers
Tiny Teddies

Here they are Teddy Grahams so Mason said the other day that Graham was having some Teddy Grahams and he was going to have some Teddy Masons.

Alyssa

Always these:
Either PB&J or rolled up bologna
Fruit (so far an apple or grapes)
Aninal crackers or Nilla wafers

then I've been rotating:
granola bar
cheese stick
yogurt

I plan to try (edited after reading this thread!)
raisins
pretzels
popcorn
rice cakes
applesauce
jello cupss
mini veggie muffins
salami
celery w/ PB

They provide milk or water, so no drink. They also had a mid-morning snack - he's told me goldfish & animal crackers, so far.

I put ritz crackers in on the first day, and those are still in there too, but he only seems to eat one a day. :dunno:

I am so jealous of those of you who can get your kids to eat raw veggies. Even w/ dip, we're having no luck there. (They do okay w/ cooked ones though. :dunno: )

I don't have to pack a lunch for Jackson, unless he does Lunch Bunch, but I don't think we're ready for that yet. These are some good ideas for at home lunches too though...I feel like we're in a lunch rut.

Alyssa, will they eat cooked ones at room temp? Sometimes the veggies I pack are cooked carrots, corn, or peas, or leftover veggies from dinner.

Cami

Teddy Masons  Too funny

We don't have to do this yet (next year), but for Caroline's camp this summer, I had to pack lunch... she had the exact same thing every day, b/c she asked for it... 1/2 PB sandwich (no J) and a snack of some kind, with a juice box or Capri sun.

TtownAnne
September 12th, 2006, 01:25 PM
I'm with Bonnie, we won't have to do this until next year because Caroline's school ends at 11:20 this year (no full days yet at Montessori!) But I'm lurking to get ideas because I know I'll need them for Madam Picky-Pants.

pink grapefruit juice because (according to him) "he can't have chocolate milk because yesterday he spilled it and had to clean it up."

Here (www.kraftcanada.com/en/KidsCentre/Recipes/Lunch/SimpleLunchBoxSolutions.htm?smid=1000762) are some good lunch ideas from Kraft. Of course everything is Kraft products but amend as you wish.

When you are sending lunches/snacks are you using sandwich bags etc. or reusable containers? I send reusable containers.
A rubbermaid drink box:

http://www.rubbermaid.com/rubbermaid/images/product/3117_sm.jpg

A Starfrit lock and lock 180ml container, which actually fits a lot! These are very easy for Mason to open so he doesn't need help. I think the Tupperware dishes are too tough sometimes. Some of these have dividers which I would like to get, but my local store is out of them.

I love these little containers from the baby aisle by First years.
For drinks I use Sigg bottles.

Jen
September 14th, 2006, 12:23 PM
plain albacore on whole wheat with provolone.
Apple juice
Few goldfish crackers

She also loves:
Raisins
Fruit leather (kind with only fruit)
Cheddar cheese
String cheese
noodle soup (likes it room temp)
PBJ (use only kind with all peanuts and no additives and pollaners)
Plain cheerioes
and ravioli although I try to limit that to once a week or less b/c it's not healthy.

Everyone here seems to wrap sandwiches in aluminum foil, so I am following the crowd on that. I use those bright First Years containers for chopped fruit and veg. Sandwich bags for crackers, popcorn, and bigger stuff like carrot sticks.

Cami
September 14th, 2006, 12:38 PM
Oh and if you send a fork/spoon, what kind is it? Plastic disposable, reusable kid utensils, or your everyday stuff? :)

sandwich bags, here. Though I like the idea of reusable stuff, but they just seem too big for the food I send to school. Everything (unless she gets a full sandwich) fits in a snack-size ziploc bag.

To answer Cami's question- I'll either use a reusable kid spoon, or a plastic disposable one.

Bev
September 14th, 2006, 04:29 PM
Stef, that's what's so great about the 180ml (6oz) container I send, it's super small and the perfect size for 10-12 baby carrots or a handful of grapes. I haven't sent anything requiring a spoon yet.

Cami, aluminum foil? That's seems weird to me. I remember wax paper wrapping sandwiches when I was a kid but aluminum foil seems sort of expensive and wasteful to me. Of course, I re-use aluminum foil, so that's just me.

Silke
September 14th, 2006, 04:35 PM
I send in reusable plastic utensils. I stack up on the ones at IKEA. They are cheap so my feelings don't get hurt if they land in the trash by accident  Those disposable ones are just too flimsy.

:duh: I didn't even attempt to convert 180 ml into oz, so I was just going by the perceived size in the pic. That's a cool container!

Silke, I've seen those before and they do look cool. But am I the only one that immediately thinks of Molly Ringwald in the Breakfast Club?

Tomorrow, Emma will take to school:
2 rolled up slices of turkey breast (we call it turkey salami- my kids will only eat lunch meat if it is called 'xx salami.')
1 slice of cheese and 1 cheese rectangle (like a stick, different shape)
cucumbers
yogurt drink
water

Bev
September 14th, 2006, 09:49 PM
Great site Silke! I don't think $34 is unreasonable for that. Tupperware would likely be a similar price. Plus, I think the Whimsical colours are totally fun and you get that book too. If I was working and had money to spare, I'd buy one for sure.

Bev

Thinking Tupperware, then it's not so expensive. You can actually buy just the inside box with containers and book under individual items. It's $19.99. I have been seriously considering it since it is pretty flat. Perfect fit for Natascha's school bag. The box is just a tad long, so not sure if it would fit her lunchbag. They do sell a cooling sleeve. Hmmm........once I bring in some bucks again.

My daughter has to be the only kid on the planet who hates pineapple (and mashed potatoes) but loves liver :puke: and spinach.

Silke
September 14th, 2006, 11:38 PM

The kids have reusable lunch boxes and drink bottles. I wrap the sandwiches in cling wrap and put cut up fruit in a smaller container. I send a plastic reusable spoon with yoghurts, apple sauce etc.

I remember the wax paper wrapped sandwiches too

A litte off topic..
I'm so dissapointed with Nutalla right now.. I read the label tonight and for some reason they have added peanut oil to the product :tearhair: I'm almost 100% positive they didn't do this before ( when Cass was Paige's age) we have no peanut allergies to deal with but still..I checked the label of the knock off nutella at work and it has no peanut oil so I guess I'll be buying that when this runs out..Paige's teacher sent home a note saying that there are students in the class with allergies to Shrimp and Strawberries which sucks because last year 4/5 times P would take strawberries..so we better find another fruit to replace it with..

I worked last night and am about to go to bed..dh packed her lunch so I have no idea what she's bringing today :)

LISA
September 15th, 2006, 05:45 AM
Oh and if you send a fork/spoon, what kind is it? Plastic disposable, reusable kid utensils, or your everyday stuff? :)

I send disposable spoon/fork with Paige but she is good and brings it home..I told her there is no need to throw it out when it can be reused again..I just don't want to send "nice" utensils incase she does lose it.

Alyssa
September 15th, 2006, 06:47 AM
Alyssa, will they eat cooked ones at room temp? Sometimes the veggies I pack are cooked carrots, corn, or peas, or leftover veggies from dinner. You know, that's never occurred to me. Carrots & broccoli are the winners here, so maybe I will try that. Can't hurt!!

Alyssa
September 15th, 2006, 06:56 AM
Emma's lunch tomorrow will have:
salami and cheese sandwich on wheat bread (cut in the shape of a heart)
yogurt drink
apple
organic guacamole flavored tortilla chips

And, b/c Mommy is parent teacher tomorrow, I'm having pretty much the same lunch. :awink:So what I want to know is if you cut your own sandwich into a heart shape too? :awink:

Aidan is very big on telling me if he wants rectangles or triangles for his sandwich.

I've been using ziploc bags to send everything in, but we have a surplus of them. Once that is lower, I am considering looking into one of those sandwich containers and maybe some snack-size containers for crackers, grapes, etc.

I also have a surplus of plastic spoons from parties, so I send those with the yogurt. They don't come home either so I don't want to send anything nicer. (Although I'm sure I could ask Aidan/his teacher to bring them back.)

My question: do your kids leave remnants of the food in the bag so that you can tell what they ate and didn't eat? Aidan seems to leave part of his sandwiches or rolled lunch meat in there, which is good for me b/c I get a sense of how much he's eating. Usually it's been just part of the crust or one piece of rolled meat, so that's reassuring. He's also left a granola bar in there for days and has brought back some animal crackers other days, but the rest is gone. So I'm assuming if something doesn't come back it's been eaten.

Cami
September 15th, 2006, 08:13 AM
My question: do your kids leave remnants of the food in the bag so that you can tell what they ate and didn't eat?

At their preschool last year, the teachers were good about leaving the remains  in there so you'd know what they ate.

Addison's school doesn't do that now. The teacher doesn't eat with them. There's just a lunchroom monitor for a big bunch of kids so I think they're on their own. So far she's brought back stuff she says she didn't like. Some of the other mums were talking about this and wondering how long it would take for the kids to get smart enough to throw everything out and tell us they ate it. :)

Mary DK

My question: do your kids leave remnants of the food in the bag so that you can tell what they ate and didn't eat?
Yes, everything comes back from both of the boys so I know what they didn't eat. Eliot usually will open his lunch box on the way home and eat the leftovers :giggle:
I did noticed yesterday that Ian's lunchbox was empty for the first time though, I hope they don't do that everytime so I can see what he ate/didn't eat because I know he didn't eat everything.

Bev

Dry cereal is a good idea. I hadn't thought about that. I am laughing at ice cream though! However I insulate the bag, I just don't think it's gonna make it. :)

I agree Cami. It is a list for our preschool. We would bring that in right at snack time if we were going to do it  I think it would be good for birthday snack (we can get those little individual cups of ice cream in the freezer section so I am thinking about it!)

Thanks Jayne :)
Once a month on the date of his bday (Ex. Jan 31st ~ the 31st of each month) Eliot has to take snack for the class so that would give me a list to choose from aside from the regular crackers & cookies... although we do have to bring something that can be stored since they're like 5 kids that bring it on that day so they have to save some of them.

Hmm, those individual ice creams would be good to bring in for Mason's birthday. :) I'll have to see if our grocery store sells them. I think there is a fridge in his class.

Yogurt has been coming back home every day this week so I'm done packing that! Bizarre because she loves yogurt. She says she doesn't have time to eat it?

Aside from the yogurt, today was:
roast beef and cheese on a hot dog bun
apple
raspberries
cheese flavored mini rice cakes

Cami, we do the drinkable yogurt. I just send a straw with it for him to drink it. I don't think he would make the time/have the time to eat a cup of yogurt since I think at lunch time he talks more than he eats

I agree with Mary. Drinkable goes down faster.

Emma requested flavored cream cheese yesterday. :dunno: So today's lunch included:

1 slice bread with strawberry cream cheese (folded over)
3 slices salami
cheese stick
yogurt drink
water

I'm astonished that so many of you are allowed to bring peanuts to school. I thought most schools were peanut free nowadays.

Mason's snack today is:
strawberries
raisins
mini ritz smores
fruit leather or whatever it's called
lemonade

Today Paige brought
- half a montreal bagel ( cinnamon sugar) cut into bite size pieces
-sliced pickles
-squiggle
-granola bar
-juice/tetra
-lemon pudding :)

So far Paige is doing much better with her lunch, she's eating most if not everything we pack

Kalyssa often doesn't have time to eat all of her lunch either. I think she's talking instead of eating. They don't let them socialize much so she saves all her campaigning for lunch time.

Today I sent:
Cold whole wheat pasta curls with leftover smoked samon (I mixed in a tiny bit of ketchup so she would eat it)
Red and green grapes
White apple grape juice

Anything more, and she can't finish it.

She will bring home leftovers despite the fact that I've told her to throw them away. I can just ask her what she ate.

The teacher actually put an open can of soup back in her metal lunch box 3 times until I sent a note asking her not to do that. There was soup leaking down the lunchbox each time. Makes me wonder how someone like that got to be a teacher in the first place.

Today:

Drink Yogurt
Fruit Cup

For tomorrow:
Mini-bagel pizzas
chocolate milk
granola bar
apple

Great idea getting them to make their own lunch, I need to start doing that soon. When she first started preschool they encouraged that and I let her help the first week or so.

Today I packed
a little bit of noodles and samon
whole wheat banana muffin
cheese stick
fruit juice box

Jen~ how irritating to clean up soup spills every day. Shouldn't she have noticed it leaking the first time?

I think I'm going to try some drinkable yogurt and muffins next week. For the yogurt, do you pack a straw or do they just open the top and drink? I'm always worried she won't be able to open what I pack.

Emily just drinks it from the pack. I don't know how she gets it open though, I have a hard time ripping the top of those things

Jen, Natascha usually helps me set up the snack portions for her lunches on Sunday. I like to pre-prep as much as I can, i.e. trail mixes, apple slices etc. That way she also gets a say-so what she eats, and I know it'll be eaten.
She won't starve if I don't have lunch ready. She knows how to help herself

Emma typically requests a straw, and I don't mind, b/c its so much neater to poke the straw through the foil cap.

Emma's lunch today:
slice of mushroom pizza
yogurt drink
goldfish

Not the healthiest lunch

If I send a yogurt, it's dannon light and fit smoothie. It's got a screw on top and I send a straw to make it easier to drink.

The teachers will help them open anything in their lunch box. When I sent the raviolis, they made sure to tell her to wait for an adult. After the 'adult' opened the lid, they left it there and kalyssa cut her finger on it trying to pull off the pop-top ring. She claimed that her friend collected them  That gives me a good excuse not to give her ravioli any more!

Cami, her teacher did notice the soup leaking and even pointed out that "something is leaking" in her lunch box. It was "soup at hand" which has a lid you drink from. I don't know why the teacher would put half a can of open soup back into a lunchbox. :dunno:

I bought drinkable yogurt last weekend and packed it Monday and yeterday and it's come back each time. She says she can't get it open, although she practiced doing it all weekend! She said she tried to poke the straw through too but it wasn't sharp enough. Today I peeled the lid back a bit, to get it started, and hopefully she'll be able to get it open. But we might be done with the drinkable yogurt experiment.

Today I packed:
roast beef and cheese on a hot dog bun
apple
juice box
grapes

I really need to send some fruit with her, the last few times I've sent raisons the box has come back untouched..banana's end up getting squished somehow and she won't touch a bruised banana( don't blame her) I think I'll try sending a peeled orange with her tomorrow.

Lisa, grapes are a big hit with my kids. Red seedless or black are best but I just read an article about the pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables and grapes and strawberries are the worst so they shouldn't eat them daily.

Cami, I tried your idea for ham on a bun and Kalyssa loved it.

Today I sent soup-at-hand chicken and stars, cheese stick, yogurt and juice. She probably won't drink the juice.
