View Full Version : No Poop...
Michele September 8th, 2006, 08:40 AM Sorry for the topic of this thread, but Anna has stopped pooping!
She's had 2 big blowouts in since last Tuesday (so a week and a half), but nothing since this past Tuesday. She is peeing a lot and passing a lot of gas, but doesn't seem particularly uncomfortable. (The gas smells horrible though.)
From everything I have read, she is still in the normal range, but this isn't normal for her. Should I do anything about it yet? What should I do?
She has a doctor's appointment on Tuesday, but I don't know if that is too long to wait to talk to someone.
She is BF-ed, but gets 1 bottle of formula (if that) a day.
Darcy September 8th, 2006, 08:45 AM Jeremy only poops every 5 days or so and has been this way since the very beginning. My ped said it's nothing to worry about for BF babies. BF babies use up most of the milk and only poop out what they don't use. He is incredibly gassy, though. It's just odd for me because Riley was also EBF and pooped regularly. Gee, guess I'm not much help. :shuffle:
Michele September 8th, 2006, 08:48 AM My issue is that she used to ALWAYS poop - literally every time I changed her diaper there was poop in there, and now nothing....
Jackson never had any issues either, so I am at a loss with this topic!
Darcy September 8th, 2006, 08:50 AM It couldn't hurt to call. They may just tell you that it's nothing, especially if Anna doesn't feel uncomfortable. Don't you wish sometimes both kids had the same issues since you knew how to deal with it the first time?
Karri September 8th, 2006, 08:58 AM I would say it doesnt hurt to call, but I do remember something about how a breastfed baby changes over time....from pooping all the time, to not needing to necessarily poop all the time (obviously some babies...not all of them)
Karri September 8th, 2006, 08:59 AM BTW - Norah had that stanky gas, too, when she was breastfed. We used to joke that she could clear a room and was worse than a grown man. Her nickname was Stinky McPew. I dont know what it was, but damn, it was awful.
Michele September 8th, 2006, 09:16 AM Anna is a little Stinky McPew too! I had Scott smell her butt last night and he couldn't believe what came out of this tiny little girl!
I guess I'll call - I just really don't want to have to take her in today. (as bad as that sounds)
Dennis September 8th, 2006, 09:19 AM When Joe wouldn't poop, our ped suggested adding karo syrup to the bottles and putting some vaseline on a q-tip and sticking that up his butt.
AmyP September 8th, 2006, 09:32 AM Sarah went from pooping all the time to pooping once every 6 days at about Anna's age. Maybe a little younger. I called the ped about it probably twice, but she said it was fine. She also said it was very typical of a BF'd baby. As long as you're getting a lot of wet diapers from her, she's fine.
She did this until we added in solids at about 4 months. It was easier on us anyway because the diapers weren't so stinky.
Angelina September 8th, 2006, 10:29 AM Oh well, exactly my worries. My son when he was a baby pooped at least once a fay, then he stopped around 5 months. And it did cause him some problems-he was crying a lot and touching his tummy. So, we started giving him some applesauce when he was 5.5 months old and that help.
My daughter, when she was born, pooped several times a day and then around 3 months she started to poope every 5 days or so. But it doesn't affect her as I see. But her gas smells awful too. She's 5 months old, I started giving her some water in a teaspoon (3-4 teaspoons) and in a month I'll start the applesauce. By the way, the water helps-she poops every day I give it to her.
Our pediatrician said I can give her the prune juice (Gerber) diluted with water, 2 ounces max. I did not try it yet.
She is (and my son was) also BF.
Michele September 8th, 2006, 10:32 AM Well she pooped! I knew once I posted that she would do it.
OMG it was horrible. I was holding her on my lap, and the diaper did nothing! We were both covered with it. She's now had a bath and I took a shower so we are good to go. I am so glad that didn't happen while we were out.
mcox September 8th, 2006, 10:46 AM I'm an OB nurse and every time we check a baby's temp rectally they poop. It's from the stimulation. So if she starts having problems again, check her temp. BTW, I'm glad she pooped but sorry it was so messy!!
Sandy September 8th, 2006, 10:54 AM Ok, I am totally glad that she pooped for you Michelle, but I have to say this thread is cracking me up!!!
Stinky McPew!!!
I kind of did a shutter w/ what Dennis posted! Yeowch!
But the best comment by far was this:

Nichole September 8th, 2006, 10:58 AM There's no depths we won't sink to with kids, is there?
I remember when those blowouts would happen after a few days of no poop. It was like waiting for the storm to hit after a couple of days. You know it's coming and you know it's going to be baaaad.
Michele September 8th, 2006, 11:01 AM My poor little girl - every one out there now knows all about her case of stank ass (as Scott calls it).
I had remembered the thermometer trick from when Jackson was a baby...that was going to be my next step. I'm glad I didn't have to resort to that...it could have been even messier that way.
I think we may have another blowout...she's grunting and groaning in her swing right now...I'm scared!
Darcy September 8th, 2006, 11:33 AM Yeah, isn't it fun? I remind Phil that every 5 days or so it's "Poop Day" in our house. And sure enough, J will be grunting and groaning and produce. I joke and ask J what it is that he ate, and then I remember that I only have myself to blame since he's BF.
Glad Anna pooped for you, but sorry that you were a victim as well.
gulp! September 8th, 2006, 11:41 AM Glad she finally pooped for you Michele!
Krishan did this as well- he was very regular, then all of a sudden would go days with nothing. His longest stretch was 10 days of not pooping! :faint: You can imagine how much fun it was when he finally went.
AmyP September 8th, 2006, 11:41 AM Yeah, I'd forgotten until you posted that when Sarah would finally go, it was the motherlode.
The conversations we have once we have kids...
Karri September 8th, 2006, 02:59 PM  OMG...I can just imagine
We called it stank ass, too. Oh the joys of parenthood.
Clearly, Anna won't be needing this t-shirt :giggle:

Alyssa September 8th, 2006, 08:34 PM Nice shirt, Karri!
This happened w/ all my kids. I was going to suggest the Karo syrup too, since our pedi said she found that worked, but I didn't feel like it helped a lot for them. It just took time.
Hope you're not covered in poop right now. :lol2:
Lyoshka September 9th, 2006, 09:28 PM Jeremy only poops every 5 days or so and has been this way since the very beginning. My ped said it's nothing to worry about for BF babies. BF babies use up most of the milk and only poop out what they don't use. Darcy and I already had this discussion (sort of)...interesting thing is, I was told that BFed babies will poop often, several times a day when they are that little, and formula babies will skip a day or two sometimes... Darcy and I go to the same dr's office and we get different info (more than once now)...makes you wonder, eh?
The stimulation helps... other than the thermometer, you can take a q-tip, put vaseline on it and insert the very tip into her butt... We did it when Nikita was gassy, and it did produce poop, too :)
Alyssa September 9th, 2006, 09:43 PM Hope you're not covered in poop right now. :lol2:I feel like me teasing you got me in trouble. This morning, Seamus had a major blow out. He's only had a handful ever. Well, today I ended up covered in poop. My arm, my shirt...ick! I blamed my comment here for it. :tease:
Michele September 9th, 2006, 10:11 PM Ha Ha Alyssa! I'm guessing that a Seamus blowout is worse than an Anna blow out these days - with him eating real food and all.
She has been regular as rain (is that the saying? I've had a few glasses of wine) since yesterday. It kind of sucks having to deal with poopy diapers again.
I swear every time I post something on here the opposite happens. I post that Anna doesn't poop and she does...I post that Jackson has been really well behaved lately, and he's a complete monster. What's up with that?
Alyssa September 9th, 2006, 10:13 PM Ha Ha Alyssa! I'm guessing that a Seamus blowout is worse than an Anna blow out these days - with him eating real food and all.
You can't even imagine...the smell, the consistency, the color. Total horror show. :puke:

Well then can you post that Deb won't be winning powerball on Thursday night!
:tease:

Jillian September 20th, 2006, 10:39 AM My issue is that she used to ALWAYS poop - literally every time I changed her diaper there was poop in there, and now nothing....
As babies get older they start digesting BM better and there just isn't much waist, at least that how our ped described it. Janelle popped every Friday for a long long long time when she was exclusively breast fed. The longest she ever went was 13 days, crazy girl, but she was never uncomfortable or anything and our ped said it was completely normal for a breast fed baby.
