I bought her a new bag, clothes and shoes but that's of my own doing..

Sorry. That list is for Tylor. In Preschool they only need themselves!

Book covers are sometimes stretchy material we put over the books to protect the binding. When we were young we used brown paper bags. You just cut them a certain way and they cover the book.

Oh..and we pay a 25$ supply fee. That supplies stuff for crafts, paint, work books etc.

LISA
September 2nd, 2006, 12:18 PM
Oh ya, I saw book covers on clearance at work the other night

and a $25 fee ontop of all that stuff you have to buy? um, isn't that what your tax dollars are for?

We didn't get any kind of supply list so I left a message at the school to ask them. If I don't hear from them before the first day, she'll be going in with nothing but herself!

Our schools hurt as it is. I don't mind the 25$ plus the supplies. It is standard here. We have been doing that since I went through the same school district. Our Tax dollars go to keeping the schools open, keeping our kids bused, and many other things.

Mary, they are required to have hand sanitizer? not that I think it's a bad idea..
and what are the baggies for?

Hey Lisa.

Our tax money doesn't cover many schools supplies here anymore. The schools here are hurting so bad that the teachers have to supply things like tissues, hand sanitizer, that kind of thing, if they want it in their classroom. So they ask each parent to supply one box of tissues, one bottle of sanitizer to the class stock so the teacher won't have to buy as much on their own.

I saw some parents in Office Depot the other day and they were spending $50-75 for school supplies PER KID for their elementary and middle school kids. And that was just buying the stuff on the lists supplied by the schools.

The only things Rebekah needs is a composition notebook with her photo on the front and a backpack with an emergency change of clothes in it. (this is for 4-yr-old preschool) The teachers do ask us to donate tissues, toilet paper, and to give gift cards to craft stores instead of Christmas gifts to the teachers.

Yep, the sanitizer was on the supply list

As far as I know they will use it to bring home some of the crafts/papers they do... like the other day they cut up a page that had 8 squares with pictures of different looking buttons that they could use to sort by groups of color/size/shape/how many holes they had/etc, the squares were sent home in a little baggie for us to reinforce/for them to show off what they've learn in school that day, like that all the pieces stayed together... there is probably other stuff they will use them for.

One thing that they have used twice now are the little brown paper sacks and I know those were not on the list so either the school or teacher are providing them... I might ask the teacher next time I think about it to see if she needs some extra ones.

For preschool Madelynn needed:

a backpack
a folder
box of markers
box of crayons
2 glue sticks
small white board with markers
roll of paper towels
clorox wipes
and kleenex

Karri

For kindergarten, Aidan needed:

3 glue sticks
1 pk. 24 crayola crayons
1 pk. 8 classic colors crayola washable markers
1 2 pocket folder
1 container clorox wipes
1 roll paper towel (boys)
1 box tissues (girls)
backpack

In kindergarten, the supplies are for common use, so they had to bring the crayola. The only thing that is his is his folder and of course, his backpack.

We have a $35 fee for the school year this year. With each grade level, the fee goes up. I am not certain what these fees go towards?

We have to take turns bringing in snacks. It averages out to once a month per child. If you want your child to have milk at snack, you pay $25 a semester. Otherwise, you send a water bottle with them. Long gone are the days of free milk and crackers for snack  (and we live in a well-off school district).

As a teacher of middle school I send home a supply list the first day and give them the rest of the week and the weekend to fill in what they may not have already gotten. I purchase markers/colored pencils/glue etc through the school general purchase orders, but it is always nice if the kids can have their own since with 100+ kids they go fast.

I have never heard of parents giving money to a general fund like that. From a teacher standpoint that's great, but as a parent I would question what the school then is doing with their "supply money" that is given by the state funding.

For JK school supplies Mason has to bring:
prepaid 35mm camera film
box of kleenex
crayons
markers
I bought a box thingy to put them in. After reading Karri's post, I don't know if they are his or everyones to share.

SILs boy in grade 3 had a long list and stuck in the middle was:
36" flat screen plasma TV (optional)

She said she wouldn't be surprised if someone actually bought one. She said there are lots of rich/competitive parents at the school.
He also has to have a backpack for bringing notes home.
Indoor shoes and spare clothes.

Maggie needed a backpack and a non-paper folder. Katie needed nothing, but I will be bringing snacks in during the year.

I thought it was very odd that I had no school list for either girl, and no extra fees either. I have a feeling this will be the last year for that.

We haven't recieved a list yet but I know they will send one soon.

We got them backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and pencil boxes. I'm just waiting on the list to get the rest.

Each kid at Mason's JK is responsible for their own snacks for recess/snack time.

Kerrie- I dont know if it was my post you were referring to, but I wasnt alluding to the $35 being supply money/general fund. Its a registration fee. I dont question it. I figure it goes toward something needed. I am sure if I asked I would be told. Heck - I bet a veteran parent would know.

For all 3 kids preschool-school supplies, it was almost $150 this year :errr:

30 glue sticks
6 boxes of crayons
3 watercolor sets
6 boxes of wet wipes
3 disposable cameras
3 pairs of scissors
6 bottles of glue
3 nap mats
6 boxes of kleenex
6 boxes of washable markers
3 backpacks
3 lunchboxes

. . . there was a bunch of other stuff on the list too, I just don't remember. . .

I think a general supply fee would be great. it would be cheaper for the teacher or school to buy supplies in bulk rather than have each parent purchase. Before I went to digital photography, I really wanted to ask each student to bring in a roll of film but I was advised NO because film wasn't an essential :( I used to spend at least $100 a year of my own money taking and developing pictures.

Wow Shanna that seems excessive considering you pay quite a bit of money for a class that is a few hours a day! You would think some of those supplies would have been provided with the paper and such.

Okay, so I guess I missed that part... so all your kids are going to a private pre-school?

If yes, then I wonder why they're asking you for so much!! Eliot went to a private MDO/preschool until last year (and Ian started this year) and all we had to do is pay a $25 supply for the whole year!

Why the disposible cameras and film? Don't most schools or teachers have adcess to a digital camera? You can usually develop digital prints cheaper than film anyways.

Our old preschool asked each parent to supply a disposable camera too. They labelled them with the kid's name and took random pictures when our kids did something cute or whatever. When your camera was full, they returned it and you took in a new one. The teachers did have digital cameras too that they used for special occasions or when the class did a project or whatever, but the disposable ones were solely/primarily pictures of our own child.

That's a good idea for pictures for the parents of their own children. I know a few teachers at my elem school uses disposible cameras, but its usually pictures for bulletin boards and such. Its great to have pictures, but many of them can get by with using digital cheaper.

Our preschool only asks kids to bring a backpack and a spiral notebook. Everything else is provided by the preschool. I wish we had a digital camera at school...we just use the disposable ones or one of us brings in a camera and shares pictures.

I don't remember what Hannah had to bring in for 1st grade. Our PTO buys the supplies...all we had to do was write a check. So much easier than braving the lines! We don't have a registration fee, but I wouldn't hesitate to pay it. When I was a teacher, most of the things I used in my classroom were payed out of my pocket...and I taught in a pretty well-off district.

I finally found out that we don't have to provide any school supplies! The school does it all. We pay £5 to the "school fund" and that's it. (although I'm not sure exactly that money is used for).

When I stopped at the office last week to ask about something, I noticed a huge stack of Canon digital cameras! I guess each classroom gets one or something.

Wow that's nice! £5 is next to nothing compared to what parents have to pay for supplies!

We didn't have to provide anything either, and the only money we paid was tuition! I guess they make it back from us in the parent volunteer requirement, though. :)
