to rollerskate? I've been taking Caroline rollerskating, and I've been astonished at the number of people that tell me oh, they couldn't take their kid, they don't know how!

Yup, my mom used to take us every weekend to Skate Land. It was so much fun and I plan to teach Sarah!

LOVED Skate Land! So many of my friends had birthday parties there, and my mom took us once in awhile too. I haven't roller skated in ages, but I do know how and had so much fun with that as a kid. I had a pair of Rainbow Brite roller skates.

We skated a lot untill I was about 12. At that age our locak skate center turned scummy and we all quit. I won't be taking my children there. I have heard it is better but I am not at all into it now and neither is anyone else we know.

Yes but I can only go forwards, no crossovers or backwards. And I can't shoot the duck either. We only got to go a few times a year.
Stacey
August 17th, 2006, 11:11 AM
Yes, I can... or I could as a kid. I had lots of my birthday parties at the skating rink. I never did learn to go backwards though. We only went to the rink for special things like parties.

Yep, or like Stacey, I could as a kid. I'm not sure I'd trust myself now. Skating parties were a big thing when we were kids. I could even do crossovers and go backwards. :dude:

I spend many a Saturday at the roller rink, and I'm pretty sure I could do it, again. Loved it, as a kid!

Yep. Or at least I used to. I haven't skated in about 15 years. I'm assuming I'd still be able to do it though. :dunno:

Nope, I was a deprived child  and when I got older my foster sister would take me but I never got the hang of it, I would hang off the edge of the rink  they closed the only roller rink in the city 5 yrs ago..too much gang activity, stabbings drugs etc.

Oh yes, used to roller skate alot as a kid. I would probably be pretty clutsy now though. We also used to go to the ice skating rink in junior high. Used to flirt with the older boys that worked there...that was fun!! (I think I even kissed one or two of them:blush: ...ahh, to be young again!)

Yes! We used to skate every Sat. morning!!!!!! And I'd win the limbo and win free skating parties for my class at school all the time! It was so awesome! And I had a birthday party at the skating rink too!!!!! Those were good times!!!!

I voted sort of--- because I can do it. But, not very well! There used to be a skating rink around the corner from my parent's house called "The Skate Connection". Oh the memories!!

I voted yes even though I was born in the 60s.
I can rollerblade too. :)

I can, or at least I could. Roller skating isn't something I'm going to do in my current condition, I'll tell you!

I had to mention Skate Land for the Baltimore folks! I know I had my own skates as a child as well, and I think they were Rainbow Brite. I'm not 100% positive though! I have my mom's skates now if I want to go roller skating. I went about six years ago and it's like riding a bike. I picked it back up okay.
Last time I was there I was 22 and taking my then 13-year-old brother out just for fun. They had an adults only skate for 18 and over and the guard whistled at me and said, "It's for 18 and over." I said, "I'm 22! Do you want to see ID?" and the guy got all embarrassed and said okay. He was probably 16 or something. That was a fun skate because there were maybe five people out on the rink! :lol2:
Hmm...this gives me an idea for the next Maryland get-together. I'm pretty sure Skate Land is still open!

I haven't been on rollerskates since I was a young child. I've been ice skating as an adult. I suppose I could still skate but who knows.

I still know how to roller skate. I love to amaze my children!
I was a rexer! Did anyone else call dancing on skates that? I wore pom-poms on my skates. The color matched my wheels and my satin jacket. :tongue2:
and mmmmkay, I was born in the late 60s.

Okay, everyone with the 1960s birthdays, I wasn't trying to EXCLUDE you, I was just aiming for an average! :)

Our 7th and 8th grade dances were held at roller rinks. :) So yes, I used to know how to roller skate. Is it like bike riding and once you learn how you never forget?

Yup I can skate, but I haven't done it in a long time. I used to love going to the Roller rink in middle school. I used to love doing shoot the duck. I had those Rainbow Brite skates too, and Strawberry Shortcake ones before those.

what is 'shoot the duck'?

what is 'shoot the duck'?
It's where you sqat down while still rolling, and extend one leg out straight. It was a super cool trick back in the day.

I was also born in the 60s :shuffle: and we roller skated all the time in grade school through high school. It was the cool cool thing to do back then. I had a pair of skates that looked like gym shoes~ blue with white stripes. I envied the girls who had pom poms on theirs!
My mom has a picture of my brother and me, mid 70s, rollerskating on a California boardwalk on vacation. I have my cool blue skates, tube socks, and rainbows all over my clothes. My brother has big brown coke bottle glasses, tube socks, knee guards, elbow pads, and a helmet. I'm not sure how I got out of wearing all the protective gear.
I guess I could still skate but it's been a long time.

I voted sort of because I was born in the 80's and spent most of my time at Skate Land and Cheap Skate here in MN, but I was always roller blading. I think I could still roller skate, but I much prefer blading.
Off topic but my best friend and I would hang out at the local tanning, video rental, and roller blade rental shop. We got to try out the latest in greatest in skates before anyone else.

Lynn - it is like riding a bike  I took Emily to a roller skating birthday party earlier this year and I was surprised that I was so good at it! I didn't fall over once and it must be at least 20 years since I last skated. She's got another party there next weekend and I'm really looking forward to it
I voted yes, but I'm another 60's baby :) I spent most of the early 80's rollerskating  I had the ones that strapped onto your shoes though, no fancy boot skates for me  I was so jealous of my friend Marie who had beautiful white boot skates!

I remember one guy who had custom (well, fancy at least) skates and they had hot pink wheels with little lights that twirled around inside. Sooooooooooooooooooooo cool. He could do all sorts of fancy skating tricks too, at least by my feeble estimation at the time.
I wanted those big puffy two-tone pom poms for my (rental) skates too Cami but I never got any either.
A couple of times I went to a really old rink in a small town that had wooden floors. There were also walls on two sides (whereas newer rinks had those half walls most of the way around). It was spooky and LOUDLOUDLOUD!!!!

I wasn't sure how to vote since I wasn't sure if 4 months in the 70's really counts, but yea, I know how to skate...I still remember the year my brother and I got skates for our birthdays he got he-man and I got my little pony, I think I was 5 and he was 3.
