I'm taking Alex to school today and I get stopped about a 1/2 block away by someone who says there is a high pressure gas leak and we couldn't go any furthur. (They are building a new shopping center in this area and they must have hit something) I told him we were trying to get to the school and he said "I wouldn't do that". So, we backtrack and I call the school and they don't know anything about it! She said that people were able to come from the other direction and get there with no problem, so she told me to come the other way. Maybe I'm just a little paranoid because a family in my hometown got blown up by a gasleak, but I took Alex home instead of the school. I called back 20 minutes later to tell them that he wasn't coming until later(if at all) and they still didn't know anything about it. Should I call someone and ask why they aren't evacuating the kids? Or why they are letting people in the area from one direction, but not the other? Who would I call?

I would call the gas company. If there IS a gas leak, they wither will know about it or need to know about it. If there is NOT a gas leak, they ALSO need to know that there is someone stopping traffic and telling people there is a gas leak.
Kelly, I would also take Julia home. Several years ago there was a gas leak around here in the gas delivery system and SEVERAL houses/businesses in many different locations blew up. Something like 20+ people were killed...you did the right thing!

I agree with Suzi and I also agree with calling the Gas company. Gas leaks are not something I would play around with. I am glad you took Alex home. I would hve done the same thing.

Thanks guys. There was that nasty gas smell, so there was something going on. Freaks me out!

Actually, I think I would call the police right after I called the gas company. THEY need to deal with the person stopping traffic.

I called the gas company and they just said no leak had been called in. How frustrating. She made me give her an address. Well, there is no address, it's just an empty lot right now. How annoying!

I agree, gas company. Tell them to send someone out to see if they smell gas.

The lady I talked to was pretty useless. Some people should not be in customer service. I'm going to drive by on my way to work and see what is going on. Luckily I can take the boys to work w/ me for a little while!

I probably would have called 911 first, right then and there. Especially if there is someone not of authority to direct traffic. Very odd that no one had called it in and you were stopped.
