View Full Version : SHOULD I be concerned about my age?

Hi all! I am currently 32 (won't be 33 until September), and have a 9 1/2 month old daughter. I was almost 31 when I got pregnant with her, after just a few months of being OTL. My cycles up until getting pregnant with her were always textbook material - 26 - 28 days long, with O around day 12 or 13. Of course, I still haven't gotten AF back since having my daughter, but I'm sure that's because I'm BFing (but currently weaning). We very much want more children (preferably 3 total), and want to start actively TTC soon (we have been OTL the past few months, but since my cycles haven't resumed yet.. nothing has happened).
I've honestly never thought much about my age being a concern. Because there are no fertility problems in my family, and my cycles have always been perfectly normal, and I didn't have trouble getting pregnant the first time around, I figured things will be fine. However, it seems like I keep coming across people IRL and posts on the message boards about it getting harder to get pregnant once you're into your 30's, or people who had no trouble conceiving number one but it took them forever to conceive number 2... etc.
So, now it's starting to concern me! I know I won't really know until we start trying.... but should I be more concerned about my age than I am?

I don't think so, or I hope not  I'm in the same boat... didn't have any problems conceiving #1, but you hear/see/read so much about secondary infertility that's it's just downright scary. Here's to quick conceptions, easy pregnancy and easy childbirths for both of us :aok:

well, i got pg accidently at 35, and just got pg on our first try at age 37. so obviously for some people age isn't a huge problem :)
:crossfing: you have no issues! 32 is still young!

Age wasn't a problem for me either. I conceived Christopher on our first cycle TTC at the age of 32. Patrick was conceived when Christopher was 10 months old also on our first cycle trying and I was 34. I am now 36 and am contemplating TTC again in the next year.

I conceived within 3 months with Mason (age 34) and on the first try with the complete mole (age 36). I suggest you avoid the latter. :) I am hoping I get pregnant right away this time, as I'm allowed to try this month.

I am 32 also. I got pg straight away with my son Patrick who is 2 1/2 years. We have been TTC#2 for 8 months now and I'm not sure what is happening. I have regular cycles too. I'm not sure if the age is an issue? When I speak to my dr. she never raises my age as a concern. We would love 2 also.

We started TTC when I was just about 39. THe problem was my husband was deployed in Korea and only home for 30 days. So we didn't conceive that month! Then I met up with him a few months later... still nothing. But after a bunch of moving around and slowly going off medication for anxiety, I got pregnant. Total of about 8 months. I was 40 when I delivered. When my husband gets back from this deployment we're TTC again. We tried for the 2 months before he left but it was so so so stressful at our house I'm not suprised!
I think I mentioned in the other thread that our dr said to go to BDing every other day around the time you O.
And good luck to all of us who are still trying!

I can't say from personal experience since I'm 25 and have never been PG. My mom had my older brother at 28, me a month before her 31st birthday, my slightly younger brother at 32, and she had an oopsie baby a few months before her 40th birthday. I think you'll be fine!

I was 32 when DD was conceived and born. It did take 14 cycles, but that had nothing to do with my age according to both my OB and the initial fertility testing DH and I had done. It's just that with all of the ladies who are successful right away, somebody needs to help out that 6 month average! :)
I have two aunts and two cousins who had children in their mid to late 30's. The only problem any of them had related to age was when my aunt had a m/c with her first pregnancy as a result of her amnio (which was, of course, recommended because she was over 35). She got PG again almost right away, skipped the amnio that time, and my cousin is a beautiful, healthy 2 year old now. I certainly don't say this to scare anyone...most women are fine after an amnio, especially with a competent doctor performing the procedure, which my aunt now does not believe she had.
I wouldn't worry. We're not even going to start talking about TTC #2 until I'm 34 and I don't plan to be worried about my age for at least a while.

Marcella: You have nothing to worry about!!! I was 34 when I got PG with Brooke and had no problem. Got PG within 2 weeks of going off BC. Am hoping to conceive by September or October and haopefully it won't take too long. Who knows. Don't worry about it.

Marcie, I hope not. I was 29 when I had Sarah, I am turning 30 this year and as you are aware, I am not TOC or TTC until I am around 33/34.
A friend of our family just had her 2nd one and she is 41 :)

My mom's mom had her first child at 38, and proceeded to have three more children, each two years apart. So, she was 44 when she had her last child (my younger aunt). And this was back in the mid-40s/early 50s, before there were any kinds of fertility treatment!

My grandmother had my dad, her last child (6 total), at age 46  I don't think you should worry so long as your cycles are normal. The only thing to be concerned about would be the increased chances for birth defects.

I wouldn't worry either! I didn't get AF back with my 1st until I stopped BF him at 6 months, we were OTL with him straight after his birth, and then once I got AF back I only had 1 AF then bang pregnant again with number 2! now he is 7 months old and am still BF and no AF!
I would put it down to the fact you are BF... I wouldn't worry until you get your AF back and you still won't get pregnant! Good luck

You've got plenty of time! I had DS in 2002 at age 33. I was pg in July-October 2003 and had a MC. I feel confident that I can go ahead and have another child and I am Turning 35 in a few weeks.

Another OLD mom here! I got pregnant with Alex at 34, gave birth at 35. We tried for two months and on the 3rd, I added charting and OPKs and got pregnant right away. Now at 37, I wouldn't worry about being pregnant again but I'm too tired to go through the Terrible Twos again.

I had Sadie the month before I turned 33 and we will be TTC #2 in June (I am now 35). We concieved the last time on the first try and hopefully we will be just as lucky this time around.
