I know this is related to the thread Clare started about school absences, but I wanted to create a separate thread for this...
Aidan starts public kindergarten on Sept 5th. Its only half-day, from 8:30-11:10.
Sept 24th-25th, my husband's firm has this mandatory retreat that he has to go to. For the 2nd year in a row, its being held at this hotel/conference center w/ an indoor waterpark. As a perk, they get as many free tickets to the indoor waterpark as they want for that Friday, the 25th.
I am staying w/ him on Thursday night b/c the spouses are kinda expected to attend the dinner and whatnot. So my mom was thinking of bringing the kids up on Friday morning so they can enjoy the waterpark. To do this, we'd have to pull Aidan out of school that morning. No - we can't wait till after he gets out of school. You have to come before 2:00, and its a 2.5 hour drive from our house.
I am curious to hear if any of you would you pull your kid from school for the morning to do something fun w/ the family?
Oh...before you make your decision, let me tell you that kindergarten in WI is *NOT* mandatory.

I would. It is only one day, and really it is just half day kindergarden

Heck yes. But I'm taking my kids out of school to go to Disney. I think as long as it's not a habit, one day a year is not going to hurt him. Especially not in kindergarten

Yup, I think it is ok. It is no different than preschool, IMO. And by not taking Aidan out of school for the day, all 3 kids would miss out on the fun.

I'd do it too.

Definitely  I don't have a problem with kids missing a day here and there in kindergarten, especially when it's not compulsory. It sounds like it will be fun! :)

It's just one day in kindergarten, so I say yes. My parents pulled me out of school for a week in kindergarten to go to Disney and I suffered no ill effects.

I would do it even if kindergarten were mandatory. It's only a few hours, are they really going to cover something crucial to his success for the year? Think not.

I wouldn't think twice about it.

Given the circumstances and his age/program, I would go for it as well.
gulp!
August 2nd, 2006, 09:12 PM
Absolutely. IIRC, his kindergarten is for younger ages, right? So it's not all that different from preschool.

It's a half day, as someone else said Norah and Elliott would miss the fun and really, as Anne stated, it's not as though he'll be learning something crucial enough to affect him for the rest of his life.
Have fun at the water park. :rain: (there isn't a water park smiley, but there is this!)

I would do it. But I wouldn't do it if it was the first week of school because I think he would need to be around for the settling in activities that they do at the very start of school.

We take Dylan out of school for vacation days a couple times a year and she is in 6th grade. We've been doing it ever since she started school. Each year she misses 1 week due to vacation and maybe another couple days for weekend trips. That's what happens with year round school schedules. She is still a straight A student and doesn't have any problem making up the work. When Alex starts school next year, I won't hesitate to pull him out either.

Sure - I would do it. :) In fact I've taken my elementary and middle school aged children out for week long vacations during the winter in the past. :heee:

I don't know... he might miss something that will turn up on the final exam. Okay, so yes, I would go for the waterpark.

We're planning on pulling Paige out of class the first week of school to go to African Lion Safari 'cause it's cheaper and less busy :shuffle:
