But since we are "already" on the subject of toilet paper... do you monitor how much your kids use? Do you have a self-imposed "square quota"?
:bullhorn: Warning, overshare ahead.
My college roommate jumped me once for using too much toilet paper. #1. Get outta the bathroom while I'm in here beeatch. #2. I'm all for saving the earth, but I'm also for cleaning up that which needs cleaning, so if I need the TP I intend to use it. And again, get outta the bathroom while I'm in here beeatch.
Soooo beyond telling him not to unroll the TP all over the floor, I haven't really told my son there's a limit to how much he can use. Do any of you care? Should I go back to the home now?
Yeah, yeah, I know this question kind of stinks.

I have a 6 year old niece. When she first got potty trained, she would tell me she could only use one square of TP. I thought my brother and SIL were toilet paper nazis. Who does that to a kid and why does it matter? How naive I was. ;)
Now that I see what kids do... unrolling practically the whole damn thing, I am about to institute the "one square" rule too. Although I might be more generous and allow them 2 or 3 squares. :)

Matthew only uses the kids disposable wipes and he knows he can only use 1 at a time. I hadn't thought about the toilet paper issue, especially for when Sara's PTd. I think I'll let her have a few ;)

No, I don't monitor my family.....but my mother should be monitored. She is killing off all the forests in the Northwest!

 We have not instituted any quotas yet but Genavieve is already notorious for unrolling the whole darn thing!

Cottonelle actually makes a little "kids kaddy" that has a built-in roll of tp and a kid's wipe container. The theme is "underwater" and on the tp, there's a snorkeling puppy who leaves his "footprints" on the paper... the kids are supposed to learn that they keep unrolling the paper following the footprints until you get to the puppy, then you tear it off... just to give them guidance on what's a reasonable amount to take at a time. The length of the design runs about 5 squares. I can't necessarily report that it helps "train" them since the're boys and still need to use the wipes when called for, but it's a neat idea.

Caroline's teachers put an overly obsessive fear into the kids about clogging the toilets, so Caroline practically self monitors, even though I tell her the toilets at home won't clog like the toilets at school (those goofy kid-sized toilets with not-good plumbing). So she's very conservative about it through no cause of mine.

I'm just happy when they use it.Sadly, I gotta agree. It's not been a problem w/ Colin, but Aidan was "forgetting" to wipe as recently as a few months ago. Not always, but sometimes. :dead: I haven't noticed it lately though.
In any event, we haven't rationed. Other than a few of those "experiements" about what happens when you keep on pulling, we haven't had a problem on this front. Or in our case, back. :awink:
(Sorry, trying to be a 1/10th as funny as Bridget.)

We try- but we're also trying to achieve some bathroom independence for Isabelle, so we're not watching closely. We did just get a potty training kit from Charmin for Rebecca that has a little "sheet guide" that you can put on a roll to show how much to use. We thought it was really silly and didn't use it- until we realized that they were noticing that in the little book that comes with it and commenting on it. So we put it on just the other day. I think it allows 4 squares. They can get more later if they still need it- but not half a roll on the first round!

I'm a little bit nazi-ish when it comes to this. I let Emma unroll until the edge touches the floor, and that's when she's supposed to stop. She's pretty good with it, but then again, she still refuses to go independently, so I'm always there to stop her from taking the whole roll.

Maggie sometimes tells me that she didn't wipe because she didn't want to. :errr: We're slooooowly working through that though.
Beyond asking them not to unravel the whole roll and/or see what happens when they run water over it, I don't care all that much as long as they use it.

I stopped trying to ration the TP after I realized it wasn't getting me anywhere. I tried the two square rule at first with my son (no one has told him that boys don't wipe after they pee yet and at 3 I don't see a problem with it).
He only uses a wipe when he poops but he poops a little just about every time he goes to the restroom. I actually prefer him to bring the wipe to me so I can be sure he's clean but I'm sure in the near future I'll teach him how to wipe more thoroughly. For now I'd rather do it myself than to find out when I'm doing laundry that he didn't wipe well enough.
I'm afraid he has overflowed our downstairs toilet once with a huge amount of TP. After my reaction, I think he's learned that you don't put that much paper in the toilet.
The problem we have is that when the roll is down to about 1/4 left, he likes to throw it away and replace it with a fresh roll. I recently noticed about 6 rolls in the powder room trash can that all had plenty of paper left on them.

No monitoring here. I buy recycled toilet paper, so I'm not worried about the effect on the forests.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. I alway remind Christopher and Patrick to wipe but they don't necessarily listen all the time. :shuffle: We are working on this though and they seem to be getting better about it.

Caroline is very good about it, w/ no real oversight from me... I always used to just give her a little bit, and I think she just followed what I did...
No one else is PT'd... I won't let Courtney near the TP b/c she LOVES to unroll the whole thing... rationing will be called for.

Did any of you have those wacky "roller restriction" thingies in your grade school/school? Ours had this little bar that stopped the roller prevented you from rolling off more than about one square. So if you needed more you had to dispense it one. sheet. at. a. time. It was very annoying.

I remember those!
No rationing here. I don't want to even think about why Sean only needs a new roll every 2-3 months. :puke:

Aiden uses the wipes still, but I do leave a roll in there toilet and I do have to monitor it because once he did clog the toilet by stuffing the ENTIRE roll down there along with a GI JOE toy... when I finally dug joe out, he did die a horrible horrible death, it wasn't pretty :errr:

I am not rationing the TP use but I HAVE to monitor it. My kids LOVE TP and play with it while they are sitting on the toilet (making crowns, whole garments and other creations LOL). They can easily go thru one whole roll each time. So ... I just stopped putting TP in their bathroom. When they were done, they called and I gave them the roll.
Once they were better about it, the TP went back in place.
