Anyway, given the choice of only ONE apple....Braeburn, by far! :lick:

I guess I have been limited as to what I have tried but I love love love big old Granny Smith apples! They are a staple on any vacation. I love to have them in the car for snacks!

Dennis
July 26th, 2006, 10:09 AM
Red delicious. But they have to be the ones with pesticides - the organic ones don't taste nearly as good.

Golden Delicious for me...I've never heard of some of these...I'll have to look for them now.

Geez, you guys can complain about anything. I only had 10 options, so I took the first 10 listed on the first website I found. I was not going to research apples all day long.
You can only please some of the people some of the time, no?

Mine's not on their either Silke!! What's yours?
SHAMROCK's are the best!
Thanks for posting this Shel. I've been thinking of a What's your favourite apple thread. I wasn't thinking of a debate but....
Red Delicious apples SUCK!! They are mealy and pulpy and generally taste BAD! They are anything but delicious. Same goes for Golden Delicious.

Elstar...old German apple type
Boskop...for baking
oh yes, those delicious apples are so not delicious. All those overly cultivated apples got like no flavor. http://www.crunchlite.com/boards/images/smilies/gag.gif I prefer the ones straight from the tree from grandma's garden

Oh no, Dennis! It's all "delicious" ( :puke: ) apples that taste bad. :box:
What about Gala? No one's mentioned them. Or Jazz?
Does everyone buy the same type of apple each time they go to the store or do you switch it up? I never buy the same kind twice in a row, unless it's on a big sale. And I never buy "delicious" apples. :)
LISA
July 26th, 2006, 12:27 PM
I must be shopping in the wrong store 'cause I havn't heard of some of the apples mentioned :dunno: and I agree with Bev, "delicious" apples are

There's a little chart above the bins of apples in our produce dept. that lists their properties (i.e. - juicy, sweet, tart, good for baking, etc) and I like to look at it and choose a new apple if I can. That's how I discovered the Pink Lady.
Ooooh, I also like a crunchy Empire too!

I've got to go with Granny Smith - although I like MacInoshes too, but only if picked fresh, the ones in the grocery store are usually no good!
I always buy Granny Smith, but I think I need to expand my apple horizons!

I don't know if we have that, but there are always so many varieties I always want to choose a new one. I do not go too crazy though if they are expensive and I consider $1.49/lb expensive. I usually go for the .99 ones or the $1.29 if I really need those ones. :)
Yeah, I like Empire and Pink Lady! My Dad likes Gravenstein the best.

Shel, what ones don't you have? I know I have only ever seen Shamrock's on Vancouver Island. They look like a Granny Smith but they aren't as hard and they aren't as tart. They are really, really good. :)

I voted for Red Del. I know, kinda boring. But for me it just has the best crunch to it. I used to really like Granny Smith, but as I get older, I find them to be a little too sour.

Royal Gala now. For most of my life it was the Golden Delicious. I don't know if I've ever seen a Braeburn. :dunno:
We should all meet at an apple farm someday and go from tree to tree doing taste tests. It could get ugly, but could also be a lot of fun.

I like golden delicious too. The red delicious ones I'd buy in NM were always mushy.

For those of you who like Granny Smiths, here is a tidbit of information! I actually grew up in the area where she lived and grew the very first Granny Smith  even visited her grave on a school field trip
