Natascha's new school finally posted the supply list. I am so clueless
What the heck is a 3-ring notebook (3-inch)?
First I thought binder but on the list for 7th and 8th grade it does say binder.
Here is part of the list...wouldn't make any sense having any papers with holes etc with no binder.
3-ring notebook
looseleaf paper
subject dividers.....I think, I know what this is
zippered pouch with holes.....pencil case?
Marble composition book...that's those little bound books with empty pages, right?
spiral notebook...got that
the rest I actually understand
Signed...just a tad bit embarrassed German who never had to buy school supplies in the US before

pictures are good. Isn't that a binder? Or is there a difference?
gulp!

I see them as the same, Silke.
You are right, the zippered pouch with holes is for pencils, erasers, and such. They are usually clear, if I recall correctly.
The marble composition book will have lines on the paper- look for a black and white cover. The binding is usually sealed- I don't think they are on a spiral.
Subject dividers are just plastic pages with holes that you put at the front of each new section for subjects. I always liked the ones that had pockets.

A binder is different. Hard to explain but different.
3 ring note book. (usually they tell you what inch they want thoug :dunno:

zippered pouch with holes
(this one I am not sure what they are asking for. Maybe a pensil case that can be clipped into the tree ring notebook. :dunno: )

 3-ring notebook = binder. The 3 inch means it needs to be 3 inches thick. They usually come in 1/2", 1", or 3" thicknesses.
Looseleaf paper is the paper that goes in the binder. It's lined paper with 3 holes along the sides.
The zippered pouch with holes is a plastic pencil case that can be put into the binder. (it has 3 holes, too)

What grade is she going into? Tylor needs most of that stuff as well. He will be in 5th grade this year!

Oh...one more question
When they say "pens (red, blue, black)" do they mean ballpoint pen?

I would assume this:

looseleaf paper

Although for her age I think you want regular and not "college ruled" - college ruled is more narrow of lines.
subject dividers.....I think, I know what this is
Can't seem to find pictures - I'll keep looking.
zippered pouch with holes.....pencil case?
A pouch yes, for pencils - it's about 5x7 and can be attached to the rings of a binder. Looking for picture...

6th grade, Jayne. We never had to worry about it before since her previous school supplied everything.

Yes.
I'm surprised that the kids have an option of bringing red pens. Used to be just blue or black - red was just used by teachers to correct papers.

This is the pencil case - the holes are on one side and the other side is zippered.

I was surprised about that, too. They even want two of the red ones.

They will probably be trading papers to correct each others' and will use red pens for that.
I'm with Barb; that's a spiral notebook. A 3-ring notebook is a binder.

In a lot of schools, teachers aren't allowed to use red anymore because it's too "harsh" or some BS.

That's crazy, Dennis. I hadn't heard of that.
I would think that a 3-ring notebook would be a binder too.

THey might be buying the red pens to give to the teacher to use :dunno: Most teachers are responsible for buying all their own supplies so this would help them out.
I thought they also outlawed kids from grading each others papers because someone sued because their child was teased by the kid grading for a mistake or some crap.
I think many stores (wal-mart) have kits already put together with all the supplies you will need and they are listed by local schools and grade. Call around before you begin the massive scavenger hunt because it would be much easier to just purchase a big sealed bag with all you need inside.

Tylor's teachers till use Red. They do trade papers but they have to use black ink at his school when they trade to grade because the teacher still does the final grade in red.
Marcy it is so hard to believe that my little boy is going to 5th grade. I feel like I just finished school how can he be in 5th grade. Granted I finished 11 years ago but still  They learn so much more then we ever did and at such an advanced rate now. It is just amazing how fast things change.

I believe Office Depot also has school lists. Maybe not kits, but lists.
Oh, and on the pens, you may want to get erasable (Paper-Mate makes a decent kind). I used those when I was in school, and they were much easier.
Yes, a 3-ring notebook is a binder. The terms are interchangable, and the 7th and 8th grade lists were probably written by different teachers who just used different terminology.

This is true. We had a class session devoted to it while in college. The law was about a student's right to privacy concerning his/her grades. It is the same reason that teachers can't post grades in a public area and technically, printing honor roll lists shouldn't be legal, but instead parents are allowed to opt out.
I've heard about the red pen thing, but honestly, I just used any pen that I could find that worked (that my coworkers hadn't stolen. :angry2: ).

I wish I would have known this last year. Tylor came home with a spelling test marked with two wrong. When I asked who had graded it he informed me that it was a kid next to him (2nd week of school) Anyhow..the two that were wrong were actually correct. I was very angry. (this wasn't for a grade but it meant that he had to take the test again at the end of the week). I sent a note on the test and pointed out the mistake in grading. I got a note back from the teacher saying it was the kids responsibility to approach her with any grading mistakes and since it was past the point of opportune time (with-in 10 minutes after the test) she would not credit him. She said the student has a chance to change the test if she lets it get longer then that. I was so mad:angry2: . She was basically calling my son a cheater without even knowing him. I let it go and talked with Tylor about what was right and wrong and left it because my DH didn't think it was worth our efforts.
Sorry for the hijack...back to the topic at hand

That's just lazy teaching, IMO. And a bunch of crap. :disbelief I don't have a problem with trading papers to grade them, because it's a good way to reinforce the subject matter. But she should be looking over them after they're checked to make sure someone didn't make a mistake.

I agree! And if a parent sent back a test that I didn't look over I would certainly give the student the correct grade!

The crap about not using red to grade papers is just that - a bunch of crap. They were trying to tell us that we couldn't mark kids' papers as incorrect because it would stifle their creativity. What a bunch of crap. I'm so sick of the public school system these days.
I don't like other kids grading your work. It's none of their business what someone else gets on their test and I think it's wrong. I know the teacher has a lot of work to do, but I'm sorry, I just don't like it.

All of you are correct about the supplies. I teach 6th grade and that is what I require. The binders are great for teaching organization. Will your child be in once class the whole day or seeing 5-6 teachers and be needing this for each class? Just wondering because my students see 5 of us and need different binders/notebooks/etc for each class.
Pens-my favorite. The red ones I use in my class since I do alot of maps. It's nice to have a different color for measuring lines, labeling capitals etc. The red pen correcting thing is different at each school. Like someone mentioned I just use whatever pen is working that day! Could be red could be pink who knows.
Suggestion-don't by Sharpies unless the teacher asks. My students for whatever reason use them all the time and I can't stand them. They get on the desks and if the classroom has a white board which uses dry erase markers and they accidentally use a Sharpie on it it wrecks the board.
Tissues are also a great thing to have on hand. We are always in need of them. I saw Target had the multi packs of Kleenex right by the school supplies.

If I have my kids correct each others work it is usually a homework assignment (multiple choice, fill in) or a notebook quiz where they get to use their notes to take it. I would never have them correct a test or major quiz-none of their business what each other got. But then again they are at the age where they will show off their tests/quizzes to each other. One was proud of his 11 on a test!

Jacob had to have red pens last year, but they graded their own papers. They had to clear off their desks and only have red pens out to grade spelling and math. It was an "Exercise in double checking their work"
