View Full Version : sleeeeep....how about it?
Lyoshka July 12th, 2006, 10:21 AM Well, I'm voicing the same frustrations Bonnie brought up just a little while ago. Nikita used to wake up once a night (mostly), and I was totally fine with it. It didn't tire me out that much, and he is usually only eating for maybe 3-5 min, so it was no big deal. Well, for the past 3 weeks or so, he wakes up 2-4 times every night! I thought, maybe a growth spurt, and it'll go away...Nah, he still wakes up a lot. Last night, he went to bed at 8:15, was up at midnight, 3ish, 5, and up for the day at 7 ( i think..they may have been one more in there somewhere).
I don't know if this has something to do with it, but maybe I'm not giving him enough solids? He still clearly prefers being breastfed, so he only gets veggies and cereal once a day, and not even every day. He doesn't seem hungry, though, when I only BF him. The times when I did give him cereal at night didn't make a difference-he still woke up.
I have been a little worried about my milk supply because for the last month or so, I can't seem to pump much at all (we are talking less than an ounce per side) before I go to bed (I used to pump 4-5 oz combined). I also feel totally soft when I wake up, and used to be VERY full. Could be because he is eating at night so much, and I also kind of just stopped pumping. I have been trying to drink lots of water last week or so. ( I will add that last Sunday I did a triathlon, so I fed him at 3:15 am and next time wasn't until I was done at 10:20 or so, and I was bursting at the seams with milk...)
Any ideas what is going on here-both with Nikita and my milk supply (I seem to ask the milk question every 3 months, and it's always fine, so i'm sure it is now, too, but any input would be great)?
Lyoshka July 12th, 2006, 10:21 AM ...oh, and sorry for the long post....
Brooke July 12th, 2006, 10:31 AM Hi Lena.
Could he be teething? Daniel was sleeping through the night but then he started waking in the middle of the night every night for over a month until he finally got his 2 bottom teeth. Once they came in, he went back to sleeping through the night.
Lyoshka July 12th, 2006, 10:40 AM I suppose so... I thought he was totally teething about a month ago, he had a few nights with low-grade fever, was fussier than usual, etc...all the symptoms. Yet, here we are at 7 months, and no teeth yet. Could it take a while even if all the outright symptoms are there?
Lyoshka July 12th, 2006, 09:09 PM .....Soooo...anybody have any thoughts on my milk supply question? I just never feel full anymore and can hardly pump much..though the baby seems content.. any ideas what is going on?
AmyP July 12th, 2006, 09:31 PM I don't know what to tell you on the milk supply. I think you're okay, though. If you don't pump often, the pump probably won't do much for you. I gave up pumping when Sarah was 9 months and went on the scrap retreat six months later. Sarah was nursing twice a day, happily might I add, and I was pumping less than an ounce on each side while I was away.
When Sarah was 7 months old, she was eating two meals of cereal and veggies or fruit twice a day. I went from feeding her cereal and veggies or fruit once a day if that to her needing two meals a day very abruptly.
At that age, Sarah was up at least once a night, I think, usually 2-3 times.
pam July 12th, 2006, 10:18 PM I wouldn't worry about the nursing. If Nikita isn't complaning about being hungry & he's gaining okay, I think all is well. According to various Lactation Consultants & Educators: 1) if you are nursing on a consistent basis, your breasts should feel soft & 2) the amount that you pump doesn't necessarily correspond to how much milk N is getting. It's likely that he is getting much more than the pump is able to get. They have also said that supply is greatest in the morning. My guess is that if you used to pump & don't do it consistently you won't get as much as you had been.
As far as teething, even if you aren't seeing any teething it could be happening. It seemed like Amelia teethed forever (& still is) before any teeth started coming in. Now she has two little teeth that have cut through her gums. I'm sure that others aren't far behind. I've heard many places that teething can interupt sleep.
Lyoshka July 13th, 2006, 12:14 PM Perhaps I need to tell on Nikita more often. He slept from the time he went to bed till 5 without a peep.... He went to bed at 8:15, but by 9:30 pm woke up twice...he was finally out close to 10.. not sure what that is all about. I did give him cereal at 7:30 hoping it might get him full, though he did not eat much.
I also wonder if putting him in a sleeper helped? A lot of times he sleeps in a onesie, and being how he moves all over the place now, I wonder if he wakes up because he gets cold? Last night he slept in a sleeper.... will try it again tonight. Who knows, maybe that's all it is.
Lyoshka July 13th, 2006, 12:15 PM Oh, and I WAS much fuller this morning, since he didn't eat every 2 hours... so I guess all is well with milk.
Alyssa July 13th, 2006, 12:36 PM Jack had been sleeping great for the past 2 months or so. For the past few weeks, he's waking a few times a night, and for good around 6:30 - about an hour and a half before his usual. Argh! He does not seem hungry when he wakes, and has refused a bottle when we have tried to give him one in the middle of the night. He's majorly teething though, so I'm hoping this is just a stage.
When we went through this a few months ago (and so Jack was closer to Nikita's current age), I did put him in the Swaddle Me blanket and it did help. It's just too hot for it here now and we don't have AC. But maybe that would help you?
Lyoshka July 13th, 2006, 01:11 PM Alyssa, did you just swaddle him for the entire night, then? Does Jack toss and turn normally? Also, do you think this would work for us, considering that Nikita is a tummy sleeper and sleeps literally ALL OVER the crib these days?
