View Full Version : Switching to a "big girl" bed
sunnyflower July 10th, 2006, 10:46 AM Not that I want to rush it or anything, but I was thinking about this the other day. Brenna will be 2 in September and is still sleeping great in her crib. Knock on wood but she has never attempted to climb out. I read somewhere that they should go to a bed when they reach 35 inches and Brenna is pretty close to that now. Her crib converts to a toddler bed-should we do that for the time being?
When did your little one go to the big kid bed? THanks!

Nocona July 10th, 2006, 11:03 AM Matthew switched at 17 month and that was only because he was screaming non stop in his crib and it stopped in a bed. I plan to keep Sara in there as long as I can. I don't see any reason to switch before they are 3 :dunno:
Dawn July 10th, 2006, 11:07 AM We switched Alexia when she was 3 yrs. 4 mos. old. That was only because we moved to a place temporarily while looking for a new house. The crib was kept in storage and we had a bed for her already.
As for Angelina, she'll be 2 in Nov. I plan on keeping her in the crib as long as we can (hers also converts to a toddler bed). She seems to be a climber though, so unless she starts climbing out of it, she's staying in there for a while longer.
Nichole July 10th, 2006, 11:19 AM I just put a crib tent on our crib to keep Gavin in his. I'm hoping to keep him in it as long as possible! I'm not ready for any night time exploring he will decide to do.
I don't think there's a need to rush her out of the crib as long as she seems comfy in it. It wouldn't be any different if you convert that crib to a toddler bed, kwim? Still the same size mattress.
I guess it depends on how you feel she'd do with staying in a regular bed. We moved Jackson to a full-size bed when he was around 20 months, but that was only because we were going to need the crib for his little brother. He did fine, but I just don't trust Gavin. He's more adventurous.
Darcy July 10th, 2006, 12:18 PM We moved Riley earlier this year, so she was about 25 months. We did it for the same reasons Nichole did--we needed the crib for the new baby. We bought her a full-size bed, and she transistioned VERY well. I think it helped that at the time she was sleeping on a cot at daycare and no longer in a crib. We put up a bed rail on the one side, and we pushed the other side against the wall. She never fussed from the minute we put her in there. I think my husband and I were a little more apprehensive about putting her in there than she actually was!
Eva July 10th, 2006, 12:45 PM Emma will be three in 2 weeks and we are planning on making the move within the next month. Not only will she be moving to a big girl bed but her big girl room. All this time she has done well in her crib and never tried to climb over do we saw no need to rush the move. Now we will be putting the new baby in the nursery and crib so I want to make the transistion a few months before the baby comes so she doesn't feel like the baby is kicking her out of her bed and room. We have been talking for months about her big girl room and her big girl bed and making a big deal about it. She seems excited so I am keeping my fingers crossed that the move goes well.
sunnyflower July 10th, 2006, 12:46 PM Thanks. I think I am going to keep her in the crib for awhile. THey are only little for so long.

Lynn July 10th, 2006, 01:03 PM We just transitioned Aaron about a month ago. He turned 3 at the end of June. He never tried to climb out.
One of the reasons we did it was because I hated changing the crib sheets so much. Not that changing queen sheets is any easier, but I don't have crib slats to mess with. We hyped up the big boy bed for about a month and he was just as excited as we were.
As we were taking the cirb down it said right on the side (on the inside, so it was always hidden) that children shouldn't be in there past 35". Aaron is 39". :shuffle:
I have to admit, it killed me to take down the last of his babyhood. I'm such a baby over stuff like that.
sunnyflower July 10th, 2006, 08:05 PM At Brenna's 19 month appointment I think she was 32 or 33 inches so I know that part of it is coming close.
Melissa July 11th, 2006, 05:30 PM We moved Katie at 30 months or so. We just set up the bed and she moved right into it. It wasn't a big deal to her. Good luck!
Dennis July 11th, 2006, 09:20 PM We just converted Frances' crib tonight. She'll be 3 in a few weeks.
Michele July 11th, 2006, 09:44 PM We just moved Jackson about a month ago, he's 2.5 and around 37" - he was fine in his crib and I only did it b/c we needed it for the new baby. He has done ok in the big boy bed, he has good nights and bad nights. Naps have gotten trickier sometimes as well, bot overall it hasn't been too bad. I would keep her in as long as possible though, it was nice to have a place to contain him.
jbaker317 July 21st, 2006, 01:13 AM We switched our daughter, Caroline, right when she turned two. We were expecting a baby in November, so we wanted to move her well before the baby came. We ended up losing our baby, but we decided to keep our plans for Caroline. We also switched her to a new room, as we were going to keep the nursery for the baby. So, she was very excited watching us paint and get her new room ready.
She never tried to climb out of her crib, either. She is not quite 35 inches, as I have heard to wait until too, but I thought she would still be okay. She has been in her bed for a month now, and has not yet tried to climb down except when we come in to get her. I have one side against a wall, the other with a rail, and I pile up her pillows at the end of the bed.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
Zaina July 24th, 2006, 07:40 AM My husband and I gave a king size bed to our daughter when she was only two because she would not sleep in her crib anymore. She usually wakes up at night otherwise and won't sleep until someone sleeps with her. Do you think it's a bad idea...she seems to love her bed though...it makes a lot of room for her to play and roll over...she likes jumping on it and there's a matress beside the bed on the floor so even if she falls she won't get hurt. I sometimes sleep with her too...there enough room...when she's sick, she never wants to sleep alone nor do I wish to leave her alone.
MrsPeacefrog July 24th, 2006, 08:05 AM Aiden went to a big boy bed at 19 months old, the main reason was Riley was going from the bassinet into the crib. We then bought bunk beds just after having Jacob because we were going to need to put Jacob in the crib, so Riley moved into a big boy bed at just on 2 years.
I personally couldn't even imagine Aiden being in a crib at over 3 years old, I was a little suprised to see how many of you still have them in there at that age. I am sure if I didn't keep pumping out babies and needing the crib my thoughts would be alot different.
Either way both my kids did great, even at that young age  so I think whenever you are comfortable with it, they will be ready!

Cami July 24th, 2006, 08:45 AM We switched both the girls right around their second birthdays. With Addison, it was totally abrupt with no preparation, because I was having a difficult pregnancy and couldn't lift her out of the crib. With Aubrey, we prepared her more and I think we did it when we did because we needed the crib for Brady. With both girls, we switched them to queen mattresses on the floor and for the most part, they did fine. Brady will be two in November and I will keep in the crib as long as possible. If he tries to get out of it, we'll switch it to the toddler bed. His room isn't big enough for any other mattress.
