We're not even close to being ready for school registration here, as Jackson's not even 4 yet (and we're strongly considering holding him back due to how his birthday and the date cutoff falls), but I was just curious about something.

How do you know when you're supposed to register for school? Is it on the parents to contact the school district or the local elementary school to find out when they need to register their child? I've got to think that a lot of students would miss the deadline if that's the case.

I'm just wanting to make sure I don't drop the ball when it's actually time to put my kids in school. I'm so not cut out for homeschooling.

Nichole, I've thought of this same thing. Maia will start kindergarten next fall, so I'm assuming that we'll need to sign her up sometime during this school year. I was thinking I'd just call the school or the school district.

They have a note on the sign in front of the elementary school here. Registration starts July 27th. :dunno: I have no idea how I would know if I didn't pass that sign 16x a day.

So you don't register until July for that coming fall? That seems so late to me. I was thinking it would be during February or March. But the only reason I think that is because that's when the preschool registration is.

ETA: Am I the only one who thinks it's a little freaky that we're wondering about registering the kids (babies! ;) ) for elementary school? They're going to look so small going to school with the big kids. :)

I was gonna say...ready for school...had me going there for a minute. Schools here have that info posted on their website. It is sometime in spring, April, I think.

Here our registration is in February/March. They send a letter out to the preschools, publish it in the local paper and post it on the school. Other then that there is no form of info. :dunno:

It is freaky, Stacey. I feel like I blinked and I suddenly have two big kids. :woa:

I don't drive past the school often and I just checked both the district and school websites and couldn't find any information. I guess I'll just call the district to find out what's up. Their websites could use some user-friendly updates, that's for sure. ;)

Our registration process starts in January and we are on year round school calendars. Alex will start kindergarten in July 2007. :woa: The reason I know this is my daughter is already enrolled in the school and our neighbor teaches the kindie enrichment program. A blurb is posted about it on the school keiosk and on the website closer to enrollment time. They certainly don't make it easy.

Kalyssa will be going into kindergarten this year and I just looked up the school website and registered her online. I also have to go in and show proof of residence and my TDL and her actual SS card and birth certificate. That's something to think about for you moms that are looking ahead. Luckily I have her SS card (and actually know where it is for a change) but if you don't, you will probably need to get a replacement card.

I think unless you are registering for private school that may have a waiting list, you don't have to register a year ahead for public school. Some people only move into the new district the summer before school starts anyway.

It is crazy to think I'll have a kid in school. I wonder where those 5.5 years went. :dunno: And Nichole, I'm trying to rush my baby out of the womb before Sept 1 so it can go to school earlier! My edd is Aug 31.

I wonder this all the time so I'm glad I'm not the only one  I see it on our school signs all the time, but I assumed that meant for people just moving into the school district. We are in Parents as Teachers, so I'm assuming our chick will hook us up with the 411 this fall. I assumed the registration would start in the early spring so they can plan for the number of teachers they are going to need.

I have to start the ball rolling in October! If we don't move, and it's not looking good, I am going to do school choice, and you have to register in October. Scary!

Really, Bonnie?! :woa: How did you find out about that? We'll have to do school choice/intradistrict transfer, too.

 Jen! The cutoff here is Dec 2, which I think is kind of silly. Why not match it up with the school year at least? :screwy:

I called the school office this year to find out. That said, we don't have public K so it wasn't an immediate issue.

Our town has school choice, so I know I have a bunch of open houses/tours to take in the fall. Then you register for your top 3 choices, and I think you find out in Jan or Feb which school they got. The information on all of this is on the town's website, under the Dept. of Education page, but it's not all that easy to navigate. No idea if they send a letter home to parents or not, but since there are 8 schools to choose from, I've started worrying about this a little and have started doing some research. :)

Here it is posted on the school website, in the newspaper, the local parenting magazine and on at least one portable sign outside a school I drive past almost every day. We had to register in February. All kids turning 4 before Dec 31st are eligible for Junior Kindergarten (half-day).

Since Mason will be 5 three days after the cut off, we put him in the afternoon session to avoid having all the 3 year olds in his class. The young nappers will all be in the morning session. The afternoon session is usually only about 13 kids, so lots of good one-on-one time. :aok:

Our registration for this coming fall was this past February. They sent it out in a newsletter and then we also got a big fat envelope in the mail w/ information about registration and all about the kindergarten programs in our school system and what they teach.

We have school choice in the entire state - you can go to any school as long as there is room (the big factor) and you provide transportation. You're guaranteed a spot in your local school. For Denver schools, you need to enroll in Dec. or Jan. if you want to go to a magnet school or choice in to a school other than your neighborhood school.

Ours schools have Kindergarten Roundup towards the end of the previous school year. The schools usually advertise on their marquees.

I would definately call the school if you have a question. Our school secretaries are happy to assist.
