View Full Version : 9 month old not sleeping through the night: help!
Bonnie July 4th, 2006, 01:32 AM Tatum is STILL waking up twice a night or more! She will take a bottle and go back to sleep, but she is big and old and should not be doing this. Any suggestions? I just don't think a 21+ pound baby should be doing this!!! HELP!!
Theresa July 4th, 2006, 06:00 AM I had the same problem with Ian! What I found helpful was gradually reducing the strength of his bottles until eventually I was just giving him water. I think he figured it wasn't worth waking up for to just get water! I also started giving him a sippy cup of water in his crib.
Good luck! Ian didn't sleep through until like 18 months. I was about ready to buy him the one-way ticket to China!
MrsPeacefrog July 4th, 2006, 06:59 AM :hug99: I know your pain, not only with the fact that Riley took 14 months to sleep through the night, but ever since Jacob came to be weighing under and the nurses recommendation to wake him up for night time feeds again has now gotten him into the routine of waking.. I got spoiled with 12 hours sleep and now it's been taken away from me, he also is waking of a night, sometimes twice but mostly just the once... he takes the breast for about 5 minutes then is back to sleep.
The only thing that worked with Riley was not offering the breast anymore and patting him while he cried and leaving the room in shorter time frames as the nights went on... took about 3 nights to fully get him to sleep through, BUT he was 14 months old, I am hesitant though to do that with Jacob because I feel he is too young for it.
I am not much help am I!
Does she take a pacifier? have you tried just going in and giving her a cuddle and putting her back down and seeing how she handles it?
Good luck :hug99:
Bev July 4th, 2006, 09:17 AM :hug99: I feel your pain Bonnie! Graham is up every 2-3 hours. I give him a boob and he's out in 5 minutes. After the second time I'm too lazy to keep getting up so I bring him in bed with me. He will be standing up and shaking the bars of his crib.
Mason took a super long time to sleep through the night, so I'm expecting more of the same. At least it's nothing new for me.
I hate the idea of letting him cry and cry so I'm just going to deal with this. I do think it will be better when I wean him and I'll give him some water in the night.
Mandi July 4th, 2006, 10:28 AM :hug99: Brayden was the same way, Bonnie. He woke up to nurse at least once a night until almost a year old. It did get pretty old and frustrating at times. Eventually he just stopped waking up. :dunno: I have heard though that the bottle thing does work. Just keep adding less and less powder until it's straight water.
Jen July 4th, 2006, 11:38 AM Could it be teething pain waking her up?
I also give Keira a warm bottle of water in the middle of the night if she wakes up. She mostly just holds it under her arm and goes back to sleep. Lately she's been waking up because she doesn't like her diaper wet at 4am. Thankfully she goes right back to sleep on most nights.
Have you tried feeding her oatmeal or rice cereal right before bedtime? That was another trick that worked for us. Get their belly super full and they sleep longer. Worth a try.
magoo July 4th, 2006, 01:37 PM I don't really have any suggestions, but I'm there with you. Anna was 15 months old before sleeping through, and at 11 months, J rarely sleeps through.
Lyoshka September 18th, 2006, 07:20 PM Bonnie...how is Tatum sleeping nowadays? PLEASE tell me she is sleeping through the night! PLEASE...hehee Nikita is 9 months now and is waking up 2-3 times every night. I"m so tired, and really need to concentrate on my business and it's very hard... I hope this ends soon. He just cut two more teeth (4 total now), so I hope he'll start sleeping better now. I don't want to let him cry, but as opposed to when he was 6 months, I'm thinking of this option now..........
Bonnie September 18th, 2006, 08:00 PM She is better, but still usually up at least one time. ARGH! :tearhair:
stass September 18th, 2006, 08:40 PM Flynn is hit or miss but lately he's been sleeping through more. :woo:
Lyoshka September 18th, 2006, 08:54 PM I could deal with one time, *I think*.. you know how I know? because it's better than two! See, i smaaart!:tease: ....or sleep-deprived (do we have an insane smilie?)?
Stacey, how did Flynn sleep before?
Bev September 18th, 2006, 09:03 PM Well, since I followed Kim's advice and put the smackdown on Graham (really more of a gentle tap, ) he started only waking up once!
I stopped nursing him in the night back in June, I guess, which wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Now he wakes up at 11:30ish usually and a quick snuggle and he's back to sleep.
Lissa September 19th, 2006, 09:59 AM I am sorry you are still struggling through this. William is 21 months and still doesn't sleep through....he wakes around 12:00 for a few minutes then back to sleep. If we are lucky, that is the only time he does wake up. This was such a huge change for us because Alex slept through the night begining at 6.5 weeks.
Lyoshka September 20th, 2006, 12:37 AM Well, since I followed Kim's advice and put the smackdown on Graham (really more of a gentle tap, ) he started only waking up once!

Bev, share Kim's advice!!! What do you do?? ONce a night would be sooo nice! I know Graham used to wake up a lot...so what have you changed to change that? tellmetellmetellme!!!!:gimi:
Lyoshka September 20th, 2006, 12:41 AM Lisa, has he always slept like this?
Bev September 20th, 2006, 08:15 AM I stopped nursing him in the night. I would go pick him up and snuggle him and he'd cry for a couple of minutes or so and then go right back to sleep.
He still struggles to fall asleep for nap and bedtime. Mason was the same way; like a fish out of water, flipping and flopping all over trying to avoid falling asleep. I used to have to physically hold Mason down to get him to stop moving. Graham isn't quite as bad, which is why I think he sleeps better during the night. Mason was getting up at least once per night until he was probably 3.5 years old.
It didn't bother me so much because I knew it wouldn't be forever and I knew that when he is 14 I'd be Why won't he get up??!!
stass September 20th, 2006, 08:23 AM Flynn used to wake 2 times or more. Now it is 1 or none. My advice is to hang in there and maybe work on getting him to eat a bigger dinner. I am not a fan of the smack down or cio but do what you feel is right for you. :)
Bev September 20th, 2006, 08:30 AM I have to say, I was freaking out about stopping nursing him in the night, but after he rooted for a sec and I didn't let him have any, he very quickly stuck his face in the smell, squawked a bit and went right back to sleep. That's why I said it was more of a gentle tap, than a smackdown. Also, because I picked him up and snuggled him, I didn't let him CIO really.
Lyoshka September 20th, 2006, 09:11 AM Bev, I think we'll give it a try again. We did try that a while back, I would just hold him, and he would root and cry and root and cry until he got me. I think the one time I held him for like 30 min...he was insistant on the boob before passing out, and of course, as soon as he got it, he was out cold in 2 min. Maybe it will work better now that he is a bit bigger.
Jillian September 20th, 2006, 10:36 AM I think you just need to hang in there, some kids just don't sleep through the night in the first year. Kincaid, who is my GOOD sleeper, didn't start consistently sleeping through the night every night till he was 18 months old. Janelle didn't untill 3 1/2 years old.
