I need some help.... I have a name picked out for Peanut, but I don't think that it is going to work. So, I have been thinking of a different name, but I don't know what spelling would be best.
Alastar
Alasdair
Alastair
The middle name would be Hamilton.

Kate - how are you pronouncing it?
Al-i-stair or Al-is-ter?

I agree with Brooke. The pronunciation will help determine the spelling.

It is pronounced AH-lah-star. It is a Gaelic name meaning protector of mankind.

Then I would go with Alastar. But I think the spelling Alastair is nicer looking. But you might have people mispronounce it that way.

I think the traditional spelling is Alastair. I like that the best.

I like Alastair, but it would probably be misprounounced quite frequently. Gaelic names generally have that problem  There was an Alastair born to a couple in my childbirth classes. I think it's a nice name :)

And just so everyone knows, his nickname would be americanized to Alex.

Kate- I know this is ridiculous but I hate this name because it's the name of a super-evil character in a soap opera called "Passions"....
This is why we ruled out the name Emanuelle even though it means "God is with us". There is a whole series of porn movies starring an Emanuelle...
Pathetic, isn't it???

i went with #1. i think with irish names here in america you really need to keep it as close to how it's pronounced as possible.
for example, i have a friend in ireland whose name is eoghan. i don't think a lot of people around here would immediately pronounce it 'owen'. kwim?

I voted for Alastair. For no good reason, I think of Alasdair as the feminine version of the name (possibly influenced by a female doctor I had who was named Alasdair). I really like this name! I think Alastair Hamilton is a great combination of names and (even without knowing the surname) I think it's very dignified and will grow to suit him through all the stages of life. Also, Alex is a great nickname.

I'm torn between Alastair and Alasdair. I don't like Alastar. It might be closer to the pronunciation, but I strongly prefer using traditional spellings.

Thank you for going with Alasdair. As a Gaelic speaking person, that is the right way to spell it ;)
