Catching up on my magazines, I came across this question and wondered what you all thought.

Say you were hosting a dinner party and made a special dessert. But one of your guests also brought an dessert, unprompted. Would you feel obligated to serve her dessert too?

Yes, I would feel obligated to serve it.

I would not feel obligated to serve it. Rather I would portion it up and send it home with each guest to enjoy.

Sure - who doesn't like a little variety?

Yes, I would serve it. The more dessert the better IMO. :)

I'd feel obligated and I agree, variety is rarely a bad thing.

Also, what else would you do with it?

I too would feel obligated and of course everyone loves a variety, esp when it comes to desert!

Yep. Two desserts are better then one :)

But if you serve both desserts, everyone might really like one of them and then someone will be embarrassed. I'd probably just serve the one the guest brought, unless there wouldn't be enough. And then there'd be more of my own yummy dessert left for me to eat by myself! :pig:

I would do this but I wouldn't feel obligated to do so. KWIM? I voted no because I wouldn't feel obligated to serve it.

ETA: I re-read the poll question before voting after I wrote this and voted yes, because the poll just asks if you would serve it, not if you would feel obligated to serve it.

Besides, if you didn't serve it, (a) what would you do with it, and (b) how would you explain to that guest why her dessert didn't show up on the table?

I'd serve both, too. I'd feel weird not serving it; I think the person who brought it would feel hurt.

As long as they serve drinkable wine, I don't mind them not serving my wine. I guess that's because my brother is a huge wine snob and is the kind of person who would carefully pick wine to match the food!

The other side of this is the hosts were probably annoyed that you broght them without being asked.

Yes absolutely I'd feel obligated to serve it. But don't think I'd mind ... I'd just offer both desserts and people could have whichever one they wanted.

I don't understand why anyone would be pissed off for their guests bringing something. Even if it is unecessary I think it is a nice gesture.

Nope,I wouldn't be offended and would offer both desserts, more dessert is never a bad thing :lick:

I am never upset when someone brings an extra dessert to a dinner party, it's nice to have some variety. Even if there was more than enough to go around in the first place, there is nothing wrong with leftovers.

I pretty sure that I would serve it. I would probably be upset if it was known that I was making something that took extra effort souffle or creme brulee, though.
