When you bought furniture for the "big boy" / "big girl" room, what pieces did you get and where did you get it?

I usually had all the furniture from the infant room and just added a twin bed and maybe some toy storage. My 3 year old son's room has 2 chest of drawers, 2 locker type storage units, a bookshelf, and armoire.

My oldest daughter is 5 and we bought her a desk and night table last year. Aside from that she already had a bookshelf, 2 chest of drawers with hutches on top, a sitting chair, a chenille child sized rocker, and an upholstered toy box.

My little one who is 16 months is still in her crib so nothing for her yet. She has a desk, a chest of drawers, 2 night stands and a queen bed in her room (it doubles as our guest room but we'll probably just give her the queen bed when she moves out of the crib)

I find most of my kid furniture for my son at Ikea. It's a pain to put together but worth it if you are on a budget, and it's just cute.

My daughter's things came from all over. Target, BrU, Ikea, consignment shops, and we got her twin bed and frame at one of those stores that only sell beds.

I don't have pictures...Jen, your daughters room is GORGOUS BTW...but Isabelle is still in her crib, so she doesn't have any actual big girl furniture yet, but Dugan's we also got at Ikea, except for his bed, we got that at Harlem Furniture (it has an attached bookcase at the head of the bed and drawers for clothes underneath). The Ikea stuff is great because it is so cheap and if he beats on it while he is playing with his friends/cousins, I won't mind if it gets a crack or whatever!! We got him an extra bookshelf, a 2 drawer "nightstand" and an armoire.

We got Lily's from a couple different places. Pottery Barn Kids, Costco, Target. She and Isabella share a room so it's kind of a mix between baby and toddler/big girl.

Jen, I love Kalyssa's room. The chandelier is gorgeous.
We did similar walls, but in lavender and yellow and a bit lower on the wall.

I'll have to find a picture.

The girl's have.... their pink kitchen, crib, toddler bed, table and 2 chairs, armoire, a shelf/night stand, and a toy bin. We're hating the toy bin and they have way too many toys for it. I'm trying to figure something else out for it.

I'm in the middle of doing Jackson's big boy room right now. As of now, he has a twin bed (just a frame, mattress, and box spring right now - but I am looking for a headboard and footboard), a night stand, a dresser, and a chair. The dresser is from Ikea, and I am planning on getting a matching headboard/footboard and maybe the matching night stand (we'll use his matching nightstand somewhere else). His chair is from Scott's grandmother's house, and his bed and the night stand are from my parent's house.

I also want a bookcase for his room - I am debating between getting an unfinished one and painting it, and getting this brushed metal one I saw at Target.

My plan is not to spend a ton of money on his furniture at this point. He beats on stuff, and we are not staying in this house for very long. My goal is to buy him a good quality, classic bedroom set when he is 7 or 8 or so. I don't want it to be too kid-ish b/c I'd like him to take it with him when he moves out.

Hopefully it will be done this weekend, and I'll post some pics.

I am hoping to work on Emma's big girl room by the end of July/beginning of August. We went bed shopping today and after seeing so many beds decided that we will get the bedroom set I fell in love with over a year ago.

It is from Costco. I will be getting the bed, dresser and night table since her present dresser/changing table will be used for the baby.

SHe also has this doll house/bookcase which I also bought at Costco about a year and a half ago:

and this toy box:

which my friend's DH made for her and it was a gift for her when she was born. It has her name on it.

Eventually I want to get a nice sitting chair as well but that can wait.

Eva, I remember that bedroom set. It's so pretty!

Marcy, are you just trying to get a jump on what you might need to upgrade from nursery to toddler room? I'm thinking just a bed and toy storage but I don't know what you already have. If the room is big enough, a sitting chair is a nice touch but if there is room, normally people already have one from the nursery days.

If you hang most of her clothes, you shouldn't need much extra clothes storage but when she gets where she wants/can dress herself you might invest in a drawer or hanger system where she can reach her clothes easily.

**Thanks for the compliments btw.

Well, we are now setting up Anya's room. We're renting a house right now, and she's been in a co-sleeper in our room. When we buy the house, she'll have her own room. My sister is giving me the crib my niece just grew out of. I wanted to get the furniture now that she'll have a while - a twin bed, dresser, bookshelf and... I wasn't sure what else. Her new room will have plenty of closet space.

Jen, I love Kalyssa's room.
Eva, great furniture from Costco.

Anna abruptly decided that she no longer wanted to sleep in her crib a few months before she turned 2. Once I figured out that was why she wasn't sleeping anymore, we just moved the double mattress from the guest bed onto her floor. It was like that for over a year, until we finally bought her this jr. loft bed a couple of months ago. She really loves bunk beds, but I was afraid of the height. This one is perfect. We don't have the shelves pictured here - just the bed for now.

Her dresser is the same as before - the one I had when I was little with a fresh coat of paint.

That's a great compromise for bunk beds. May I ask where it is from?

Marcy, planning ahead always makes sense.
I think you will want some storage for the new toys, books, etc. that come with being a toddler and beyond. It helps my kids keep things picked up when there is a place for everything.

If there is enough room for a small table and chair (kid sized one) that is a neat addition as well. She can have tea parties or do crafts/coloring, etc.

I always liked the chest of drawers with a hutch on top because it takes up less floor space but you get lots of storage/display area.

Stacey brought up some good points in Eva's trundle bed thread that a day bed can be a better use of space because the longest side is up against the wall, leaving more free space in the middle of the room for the children to play. Plus if you need or want a trundle, it's easier to pull out on a day bed than on a regular twin bed that may have a nightstand or other furniture in the way of the trundle.

Claira's bedroom is all from IKEA. She has a white metal day bed, 2 linen cabinets, a toy chest, a small table and chair set, 2 little rocking chairs and book some shelves. Everything I buy is from the 'as is' section, it is soo cheap and usually there is only a small scratch somewhere on it. There is a big 'as is' sale there every year, and 2 years ago we picked up the linen cabinets there, the first one was 1/2 price at $125 the second one was only $15! and you would never know because it looks like it's in great condition. Anyway, as you can tell I get excited talking about it because it was such a freaking good deal. Olivia is still in a crib that we will convert to a toddler bed when she is two, her bedding is so cute, it is pink toile with matching cutains and wallpaper.

That's a great looking jr loft bed :aok:

We got Eliot's "big boy" furniture at Cargo Kids (now Pier1 Kids)

We got the bottom bunk bed set up to have the choice of adding the top bunk bed if/when we decided to do it. We also liked that since they're simple pieces from one of their basic looks, we could always add more furniture as he grew up and needed it.
We also got him the dresser and the book shelf. All of it is in the Classic color scheme.

The next thing I want to get him in the next couple of years, is one of the desks.
