View Full Version : Just a cold?

Yesterday, Nikita was somewhat fussy during the day and took long naps. He also wanted me to hold him a lot. At night, he felt a little warm, and when I took his temp, it was 99.8. I gave him about 1 ml of Tylenol (I think at his 4 month appt he got 1.2 ml), he slept good, and when I took his temps twice during the day, they were 96.4 and 97.smth...He acted like he was fine all day, was playful, ate well and took good naps. Tonight, I gave him a bath, he ate his cereal, had some BM, and when I took his temp, it was again 99.7..... He feels *a bit* clammy. He doesn't seem any more tired than usual, though he is having a hard time going to sleep. He is usually out by 8, it's now 9:20 and he is still up-but that could be b/c of his long naps?

He started cereal last night, but I don't think solids would have any reaction like that?

Is it just a cold, or should I be worried? Should I give him Tylenol when he gets up in the middle of the night to eat? I think I'll call the pedi office tomorrow-just in case-but for now...any advice?

I doubt it's from the cereal. My guess would either be just a little cold or bug, or that he's teething. He's the perfect age for that.

Mandi, thanks! So just Tylenol and TLC?

That's what I'd do. Just keep an eye on him and if his temp gets about 101, then maybe call his Dr. Teething temps can often get that high. If you notice that he seems better after a dose of tylenol, chances are it is teething (and I'm not Dr, I just play one on the internet ;) ) Have you checked his gums to see if he's got any bumps?

FWIW, I agree with Mandi...it's nothing to worry about. :secret: Also, if the temp gets higher than 101, give Motrin instead of Tylenol...tylenol doesn't work well on fevers over 101 and Motrin lasts longer. Hope he's better soon!

Ah, thank you! He does have bumps on his gums...he has had about 6 teeth right under gums-for over 2 months now..but not the central ones. I will check again in the morning to see if there are any other developments...

Thank you for all your advice!

Something else I've thought about. Last couple of days, he'd had runny nose... and I mean-runny. I've put in breast milk and he sneezed some snot out, but also, when he is playing, a couple of times there would be clear mucus just running out of his nose. Could this be connected to teething, or is it a totally separate issue?

I think running nose can be connected with teething (we didn't have any problem with teeth, but moms in our playground told about such symptoms).
What is 99,8 in centigrade?
What d'u mean "he has had 6 teeth under gums,...not the central ones" - masticatory teeth? Nikita is about 5 m.o. right? That teeth should grow after a year of life.

Inna, 99.8F is right around 37.7C....
I am not sure what those teeth are called, they are the ones to the side of the two central ones....they are right under gums, you can see the big white bumps. They have been like this since he was almost 4 months. He will be 6 months in 6 days.

All of my kids got runny noses when they were teething. They sometimes got diarrhea or runny bm's too. And of course occasionally fevers and always grumpiness.

Every child teeths differently so that may be that he's going to get those teeth first. :dunno:

Thanks, Mandi! I think this must be it, because he doesn't act like he is sick.. He also has been sleeping A LOT during the day... and his poopy diapers have been on the green side the last 2-3 days (don't know if that has anything to do with anything). I think there might be a growth spurt going on there, as well.

All of that is typical of teething. Sometimes Sarah gets a runny nose when she's teething. I'd just give him some TLC and hope for the best. Baby Orajel works nicely for Sarah as well.

Yup, I'd say runny nose, sleeping, cranky and fever sounds like teething. My rule of thumb is unless there's a good fever (100+) not to worry too much. If he's having a lot of trouble getting to sleep you could try Hyland's Teething Tablets. They don't relieve the pain but help calm the baby so he can get to sleep.

Absolutely teething signs! Nathan exhibited the same symptoms right before his two bottom teeth popped through! I had the same experience with his older brothers.
