I've managed to freak myself out quite a bit in the last few days. Aaron, age almost-three, walks on his toes nearly all of the time.

I've noticed it before and figured he was still getting his stride worked out. It's not his shoes because I have been letting him go barefoot or just wear socks for the last 2 months and he's still doing it.

Almost everything I've read either points to cerebal palsy, autism, or some funky thing with the achiles tendon.

Has anyone else dealt with this before?

i know kate's (kate) son cameron did this  and he has none of the above (not positive about the tendon thing). i'm not sure he still does it, you should pm her.

my friend paul's son is autistic and does it as well.

i would get him into the ped asap so you can get a diagnosis and started on therapy. even if it's just 'habit' he'll need to relearn how to walk correctly.

Try not to worry yourself sick. I don't think it means for sure he has any terrible disease but I would get him checked at the pedi just to see if he might need leg braces. Are you noticing any other symptoms that lead you to think it may be more serious?

I noticed several symptoms of cerebral palsy in my daughter when she was in infant but it turned out to be nothing more than coincidence. I know it's difficult not to stress and worry about it so hopefully the doctors can check it out and give you some information that will help.

We have a neice who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as an infant. They said she would never function normally and gave her a very damning prognosis (she was severely premature at birth). Well, she is 19 years old and normal in every way. She is intelligent and has no lasting effects at all! You would never know she had been given such a horrible diagnosis.

She did walk on tip toes and did have to wear braces on her legs for a while when she was little, just to help stretch the tendons out but she was totally fine after that.

I hope you get some answers soon to ease your mind.

Lynn,

I have CP and still tend to walk more on my toes. Other than that I have no major problems. (Although my balance is really crappy.) I did PT when I was younger (through about age 12), And I also wore braces on my legs at night for several years. Oh and when I was 3 I had surgery on both of my legs to lengthen my ankle cords.

It maybe nothing, but it certainly doesn't hurt to go have him checked out!

My 22mo old does that and I was thinking that I'm gonna mention it at his 2yr old checkup in a couple of months.
I didn't know about the CP or autism but then again I wouldn't worry unless my kid was showing other signs.
I did babysat a kid a long time ago that had problems with his tendons needing to be stretched, he didn't have to wear braces just special shoes (they looked like booties with a harder sole) for awhile, he did learned to walk on flat feet but every once in awhile he would get on his toes again (force of habit maybe?) but all we had to do is remind him to walk on his flat feet and he would.
