View Full Version : How old is "too old" for a bulb syringe?
Amy May 10th, 2006, 10:45 AM Both girls are in Snotsville USA right now, and neither is even halfway capable of blowing it all out. Emily can do it once in a while, but no way can Molly handle it yet. I was using the bulb syringe on Molly last week (and getting out gobs :puke: ) but DH said he thought she might be getting too old for it. She hates it (understandably), but what else could I do??
If I thought I could pin Emily down, I'd get her nose suctioned out in a heartbeat. She can barely breathe and it's constantly running into her mouth. UGH!!!!
So when did you stop using the bulb syringes? Are 2 & 3 yr olds too old?
Jayne May 10th, 2006, 10:47 AM I have still used it on Alyssa when she was really sick and she is 4. I can also tell you I have used it on myself. I just was in such pain from blowing my nose that I got the darn thing out and suctioned it for 4 days straight. My nose healed and I could breath. I don't know that there is an age you have to stop using it.
Shanna May 10th, 2006, 10:49 AM I'm almost 29 and still use one on my own sinuses :blush1:
Nichole May 10th, 2006, 11:02 AM I figure as long as it works, it's all good. Especially if they're not able to blow it all out themselves.
Alyson May 10th, 2006, 11:12 AM Brookelyn is 2.5 and we still use it on her and will continue to do so. They were using it on her in the hospital this year still too. And I too have used it on myself quite a few times!!
Amy May 10th, 2006, 11:23 AM Yanno....I have been tempted sometimes to use it on myself but never did, but knowing so many of you have I will give it a try next time I can't breathe!!
I think I may try it on E later today. She's getting really upset with me wiping her nose all the time because she'll shove my hand up, which then shoves my nails into her poor little nose. :blue: It's a wrestling match using it on MK, but I think E may calm down enough for me to do it.
Shanna May 10th, 2006, 11:26 AM When I had my sinus surgery, my doctor showed me a trick - you fill a cup of warm salt water, then take a bulb syringe and suck the water up, then pulsate it up your nose - PURE HEAVEN, I tell ya!!
Melissa May 10th, 2006, 11:31 AM I agree, I don't think there is a "too old" range.
Amy May 10th, 2006, 04:28 PM Well, I tried it on Emily before her nap....and holy cow. :blue: It was awful. I asked her first, but I think the last time I used it on her she was maybe 1. She screamed and cried so hard she was shaking. Bad mommy!!!! No way will I do that again.
Although...I did get a lot of goo out of one side!!!
I think if I used it semi regularly (like I do on Molly) it would be different, but it really scared Emily.
Suzi May 10th, 2006, 05:02 PM I was going to post kinda the same thing as Shanna. If you use spray saline up the nose, it really does work to loosen the snot and get it all out - and quite easily, I might add! I used it on myself a few weeks ago and I was shocked at the results!
Karri May 10th, 2006, 10:14 PM Sorry that Emily was so scarred by it. I used it on Aidan (4) recently and although he wasn't happy, I was able to reason with him. Elliott (2.5) will allow me to use it, but Norah will not let me near her nose with it and will fight me tooth and nail to keep it away from her nose.
