View Full Version : Dressing babies in the summer

I'm still trying to learn the "Dress the baby one layer more than you're wearing" methodology. My question is this: Anya has a bunch of cute summer outfits - sleeveless tops and shorts. She spends the day at daycare - the room is warm - or our airconditioned house which is set to about 70 (so DH doesn't go crazy). It's in the 50s in the morning and 70s by afternoon. I tend to wear short sleeves in summer because I don't like bare arms. So. When can I put her in sleeveless if I don't even wear sleeveless? If I'd be outside in 80 degree weather, then I'd wear sleeveless but not inside.
Think I can use the baby as an excuse to my husband that the house should be kept at 73 in the summer?
When do you put your kids in sleeveless or shorts? Do you base it on indoor temp, outdoor temp, or what?

my daycare (in-home) doesn't have airconditioning, and they are outside most of the day so i send them as naked as possible
tanks, tees and shorts mostly.

I base it on the outside temp and also depending on if we're going to be out and about. If she gets chilly at home you can always put another layer on her and take it off when you leave the house.

I think 70 is on the coolish side but that's me.
If the back of her neck feels OK then she should be OK.

I live way south of you, so I am probably no help, but when my son was born (July 27), I rarely put more than a onesie and socks on him during the day :dunno: It is 100+ degrees with 90+% humidity here, though, in the summer

Kim - even when it's cold(er) in the morning?
Nocona - see, that's the thing - If I dress her in sleeveless and shorts in the morning, to put another layer on is both a pr of pants and a zip-up shirt. So she'd be bulky.
Stacy - I think 70 is cool also. I think 75+ is warm. I'll check the back of her neck.
Shanna - if we were still in Texas then I'd have no problem dressing her. It's the PA weather that's making it rough. In TX it's 70 still overnight, 90s during the day.

I might be able to help as Ohio is basically the same weather as PA. I have yet to have my kids in tanks. They have worn shorts occasionally but I still think that the chill in the air is there so we are sticking with pants and T-shirts.
Alyssa was born in December and that first summer I had so many cute things for her to wear. The weather here is so hard to deal with. I usually base it on the outside temp and keep a little sweater in the diaper bag. That way in the car if you have the AC on or the house is really kept that cool you can put it on her if you feel she needs it. For her D/C I think I would wait until it is supposed to be in the upper 70's by noon in the day. I know right now it doesn't hit that till almost 3pm. Also from my experience here the chill in the air doesn't leave for good until mid June. We have had snow on my son's birthday and that is May 27th so I would put all the winter things away just yet

I'm in MD and I generally only put Sarah in sleeveless on those insanely hot days in July and August when it's really humid and in the upper 90's. Although she is wearing sleeveless today because it's nice out and we're not turning on the AC.

I would put her in sleeveless and just use a light colored cardigan in the morning when there is a chill. My kid's legs are usually ok in 70 degrees and shorts/skirt. If she seems cold, maybe just put a light pair of leggings on and switch with shorts later in the day.
Of course, I'm also in Texas, where you can go sleeveless at Christmas time :)

We're in PA, too. Neither of my kids have worn sleeveless yet - it hasn't been warm enough. They're both in shorts/short sleeves today. I figure approaching 80 is good for shorts, in the 60's, they're in pants/capris. Last summer, when my daughter was an infant, I mostly had her in short sleeves except when it was crazy hot and we were going to be outside a lot. For airconditioning, I always carried a light blanket to cover her and a sweater.

Thanks. I now feel better about not putting her in her sleeveless stuff yet.
It was esp helpful to hear from you, Jayne, Amy, BuzzJen, since you're in the same climate. It's hard to get used to PA weather again.

I'm in Minnesota and I've been putting Mia in a lightweight long sleeve onsie with a pair of pants in the morning. It's usually a little cooler at my D/C's house anyway. But, if it gets warmer, she just take of Mia's pants and be fine. Then again, I, personally, am usually always on the cooler side so dressing her warmer than me would be like putting her in a snowsuit when it's 70 degrees out!!!
Whether it's right or not, my own stupid little theory is: If she's got long sleeves, then she can wear shorts. If she's got pants on, then she can be in short sleeves. At least part of her is warm then!!!
This is a good question Marcy!!! I've been struggling a lot with this myself.

That first summer, we had several light cotton (shirt weight) cardigan type thingeys that I would layer over sleeveless or short sleeves in the morning, before the sun was so hot. I never worried so much about the legs, rather, I'd just put socks on them.
As far as the house temp, I would raise it a tad during the daytime. 70 is freakin' cold!

I hear you! I would prefer the temp inside be low to mid 70s. DH sometimes thinks that it's too "warm" at 70. Crazy. Does he think we're made of money to pay that electric bill?
I set it to low 70s when he's not here during the day.
