View Full Version : What would you do?

I have a friend who I leant my baby swing to. She just e-mailed me to tell that it got broken. The part to fix it costs $16. I honestly don't care that much about the swing, but I was hoping to sell it at a tag sale this summer. I would probably ask $10 for it at the sale. Do you think it would be fair to tell my friend she can just keep the swing and give me the $10 I was hoping to get for it? It just doesn't make sense to me for her to pay $16 to fix something I'll sell for $10. :dunno: What do you think?
ETA: She was able to glue the swing so that it works. It just doesn't look so great.

Honestly, I think I'd jut tell her to forget about it. Let her keep the swing - if she wants to fix it fine, if not do with it as she will. If she offers up some cash for it terrific, if she offers to take you to lunch to call it even great...but it's just not that big of a deal IMO.

I agree with Suzi.

Yeah I agree, if it was a $50 thing then it would be a different story but for $10 seems kind of pointless to me. :dunno:

Agreeing with the others. If you only wanted $10 for it then I'd let it go.

Am I the only one that thinks the friend should just go ahead and order the part and fix it? I mean, you saved her $$ by not having to buy her own swing, surely I'm not alone in thinking she broke it she should fix it?:shuffle:

I would think that if Theresa wanted to reuse the swing or sell it for more money. But if the part costs more then Theresa planned to sell it for then I'd let it go. What's the point in fixing it for $16 to sell for $10?

Ah point taken..I still think if it were me and I broke the item I would fix it and not say anything no matter the cost to fix:shuffle:

I agree the friend should get it fixed, but I don't think it's worth making an issue out of for $10.

Tell your friend you'll just sell it to her for $10 and call it good.
Or you can not worry about it.
The way I see it - $10 is $10 - and that's good enough for say, oh, a movie ticket for an adult and child at a matinee... it's worth a parent's meal and a kid's meal at a fast food joint...
It would be easy for some people to say that $10 is nothing - but frankly, $10 can mean a lot to someone who doesn't have a lot of money.

I agree with this. Especially since you were hoping to get $10 for it at a tag sale, you may not have gotten that amount in reality. I would probably say something like, "Don't worry about it, why don't you just keep it and if you want to fix it, you are more than welcome to."

If I were your friend, I would have offered to fix it w/o even checking w/you, but that's just me :dunno: If something gets lent to me I take super good care of it and make sure that they get it back in the condition it was given to me. Sorry your friend put you in this crappy situation, but I would probably just let it go, as well and make a mental note about loaning that friend something, again.

She could have just fixed it and not even said anything. I could understand if she didn't know how to fix it but obviously she knows exactly how and what needs to be done, so she easily could have fixed it and returned it without saying anything.
I'm not criticizing your friend, Theresa... maybe she realizes that you're done with it and maybe she's done too so she figured, why make the effort to fix it if no one's going to use it.
With that in mind, Theresa, I would say to her: "oh, I was planning to sell it at a yard sale this summer, but don't worry about getting it fixed. I can sell it as is." And it kind of leaves the ball in her court to respond to that.

Actually this is what I ended up doing. I told her she could just give me the $10 I was hoping to get for it at a tag sale and she could keep the swing. She was fine with that.
I talked to DH about it and did not want to just give it to her. We've given her SO much stuff for her baby and she did know that this was on loan.
Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts! :)
