View Full Version : Discussion junction, what's your function? (weekend posting party)

New thread for a new weekend! I heard the Conjunction Junction song on the way to work this morning and can't get it out of my head, hence the title today.
Topic to start: what's the grossest thing you've ever eaten?
Hmm...I'm having a hard time answering my own question. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is steak tartare. It probably qualifies as gross because it's raw ground beef. (or maybe it's gross because I actually liked it  )

I can't think of anything gross I've eaten on purpose. I tried some Sushi one time and hated it, couldn't even swallow it, had to spit it out. :dead: Also accidentally swalled some sour milk once. Now I always sniff milk before I pour it.
Nichole

Ew, sour milk is definitely on the gross list. :dead:

Cavier. I still get sick thinking of it. :dead:

Yeah, I think caviar would be at the top of my list as well. I guess I am just uncultured.
Re: sour milk: I saw part of a commerical yesterday that had a guy eating "cottage cheese" out of a milk carton. The roommate walked in and reminded him that cottage cheese doesn't come in milk cartons, and guy #1 thought about it for a second, shrugged and went back to eating it. :puke: I had to turn it off right away. Even thinking about it now makes me feel a little queasy.

Do you remember what it was a commercial for? I think I'd puke if I saw it.
Nichole
April 21st, 2006, 12:06 PM
Ewww, that's gross! :puke: I wonder if it was a Carls Jr/Hardees ad? You know the one about how if it weren't for them, some guys would go hungry?

I don't normally think it's disgusting - but when I was in Paris, we ordered some shrimp and it came out with all the antennae and everything. It was definitely a different sight to behold, that's for sure. I don't like my food looking back at me.

I'm the same way, and I don't like it to resemble the creature it once was. :errr:

I have no idea what the commercial was for. I couldn't watch the end to find out. :errr:
This one time, on the way to a business dinner,[/American Pie] the guys I was going with took great delight in describing the "Three Screams" dish to me. Here is what I found online as a description, but the guys described it as being served with a very young/embryonic chick of some sort:
2) Three screams
Take a live young mouse (just-born). Clasp its head using chopsticks, it'll make one screaming noise. Then dip it into the sauce, it'll make another scream noise. Then put it into your mouth, and it makes another screaming noise. This dish therefore is called "Three Screams" (San Zhi Er).

There was a class held at my school Washington State University - in entomology - and at the end of the class, they taught you which bugs you could eat - and had a feast offering these bugs. :puke:

rattlesnake is probably at the top of my "most disgusting thing i ever ate" list. but it was almost unrecognizable since it was breaded so heavily and deep fried.
Mrs. Shae
April 21st, 2006, 12:16 PM
it was neither on purpose or really by choice ... but when i was young ... i was *tricked* into eating Rocky Mountain Oysters :puke: ... and they were nasty BEFORE i knew what they were ...

I try to stay away from anything to gross because I have a strong gag reflex. The one food I really can't eat is salmon and where I live salmon is THE local food, BC has lots of fresh, wild salmon. I worked at a Japanese retaurant after highschool for a bit and the sushi chef gave me a salmon roll while I was on shift once, I took a bite and started to gag right there in front of customers I had to hide behind the counter and spit it out; sooo embarassing!

Ok, I'm currently regretting the topic choice I made here.
New topic:
If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one food with you, what would it be? (assume you'd have an endless supply ;))
My DIF (desert island food): Cheeseburger with the works (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, etc). :lick: I figure I can eat just the veggies and bun if I get tired of the meat.
Alysia
April 21st, 2006, 01:02 PM
It would have to be my guilty pleasure... pepperoni sticks! Oh so bad for me... but oh so yummy!
Barb
April 21st, 2006, 01:03 PM
My DIF: I could never get tired of chocolate chip cookies.
LISA
April 21st, 2006, 01:06 PM

Gross foods - there's not much I wouldn't try at least once, figuring that if I were starving I'd sure be willing to eat it! So I've had shark, buffalo, alligator (not bad - done up spicy like sausage), escargot.
Desert island food - french fries! I literally could eat french fries every day and be totally happy.
Bev
April 21st, 2006, 01:17 PM
Gross foods: Wasabi. Many of the food choices at the "real Chinese" restaurant for my friends wedding when I was 3 months pregnant. You can't spit food out into a cloth napkin.
Desert island food: Toughie. I'm inclined to say peanut butter toast, but the fries sound good too.
Grossest thing Graham has ever almost eaten, just today: The flimy part of the cat claw that is shaped like the cat claw but sort of peels off the side when you trim the cat claws, or they fall off by themselves. KWIM? He's better for picking up crap than my vacuum, I swear!

Ooh, I'm off to scope out some shoes! :bolt: I like both of your choices Alyssa, but the pink ones are the kind that my feet would stinkify in short order. :dead:
DIE (desert island entertainment): Tough one. hmmm... I might have to go with The Princess Bride, too. I think a book might be a better choice for me, though. How to narrow it down, though? I shall have to think on that one for a bit.

Do the pink ones come with laces? or is that why they were such a deal?:lol: No laces is the style. But I will admit to looking for them in the box before I realized that!
They're at Payless, BTW. Also have them in blue:
http://www.payless.com/Images/beauty/047040_beauty.gif
And with backs in green:

I almost got these ones instead, but worried about what color to wear w/them:
http://www.payless.com/Images/beauty/045405_beauty.gif
These were the others I thought about. I don't have all my summery clothes figured out though, so I might go back. I like bying summer shoes at Payless b/c they are cheap and I don't worry if they get wrecked/go out of style:

Most disgusting food for me...chicken feet...I used to go for dim sum brunch in Chinatown a lot when we lived in the city, and one day I was dared to try them....nasty and never again!
DIF - I think for me it would be pizza, but Nichole's burger is sounding pretty good too.
DIE - This is a hard one, I don't really have a book or a movie that I watch over and over again. I think I would bring my old Little House on the Prairie (geek alert!), books - they are all packaged together in a box, so I think they could count as one. Those are the only books I have read multiple times, although not so much in the last 15 years....
Nichole
April 21st, 2006, 02:11 PM
Trish! You have to see that movie!
Michele, I loved the LHOTP books, too. I haven't read them in ages, but it sounds like a good idea. :)
I didn't see any work-appropriate shoes at Payless, but I do kind of like these for kicking around town:

I'm glad I'm not alone in my fondness for LHOTP, Nichole!
I like those shoes too...and I like the sneaker ones that Alyssa posted, but I too fear the stink factor.
I need spring/summer clothes in a bad way, but I just don't want to spend any money on maternity clothes. I squeezed myself into a pair of non-maternity capris today (they have a drawstring waist), not too bad for almost 27 weeks.
ETA: I just looked at my ticker...I thought I was closer to 27 weeks than I am...damn!

The tongue and area around the laces is sewn down, so they aren't flopping around on your feet.

Okay Posting Party Participants. I have a personal "help me" question.
If your job was in question due to your company being acquired, would you still put your house on the market knowing how slow the market is these days, or would you wait until you knew for 100% if you would still have your current job?

I haven't seen Princess Bride or Goonies either.

Nichole - Hope your baby's ok. It sucks when they're sick! Angelina always seems to be sick and she's not even in daycare! :wtf: When she goes to the Dr. next mo. for her 18 mo. visit, I'm going to mention it to him because I *think* she may have allergies now.
What is everyone's plans for the weekend??? What's the weather going to be like too?

Oh no, Bretta. :blue: I hope Ashley & Savannah get well soon. :(
I'm sure they'll be fine with G'ma. :) You have a good time at Six Flags! Lucky you! It's been a couple years that we went, and hope to go this season! :) They've added so much stuff and rides....I'm dying to check it out!

:wavey: Hi Everyone!!
I just pulled myself out of bed a few hours ago (its 2:45pm) because we spent the entire night in hospital with Jacob :blue: my poor baby was vomiting non stop and pooping like there was no tomorrow, he was starting to get dehydrated. He has viral gastrointeritis (sp?) and has spots all over his body.. The dr's were concerned because he is on heavy antibiotics for his staph toe and if he couldn't keep anything down then the antibiotics won't work and they were talking penicilin shots and everything, but by about 4am this morning he stopped throwing up and managed to keep down 7 x 3ml syringes of pedilite. So we got sent home with orders if it starts up again to bring him back... MY theory he caught it when we went to emergency on tuesday for the toe, there were manky kids all over the joint
Okay... so my answers
Disgusting food: witchiti grubs
Disgusting drink: a cocktail of milk, scotch, beer, sub zero and red wine... skulled in one hit! ACK!
DIF: my mothers broscholi's they are the BEST
DIE: I would bring the internet with me as well...
Alyssa: I would always wait to see whats going on.
Nichole: hope your baby is okay!
And as a side note I just recently saw goonies again when it was on Movie greats.. I used to love it as a kid!

Oh Bretta: I missed your post.. I hope the girls feel better!
yeah it sucks hey Dawn! Its gastro season here... we were at the hospital for over 6 hours and I had a view of the triage nurses desk from our bed and I must have seen him hand out 50+ bottles of pedilite and doing fluid trials with all those children! just CRAZEEEEE

Ya, I'm curious what movie you picked :)
I've been awake since 3:f'n 30 in the f'n morning :dead: ( can you tell I'm not dealing well with it ) I have wicked heartburn and nothing I take will get rid of it :tearhair:

:hug99: Lisa.
It's rainy here today. UGH. That means no biking or park. :fado:
We have to pick up something for the IL's 40th Anniversary.
? for y'all.
Rick thinks that because it's his parents that married each other that they should be the ones to buy each other something or do something special.
I think that as the children, he and his brother should have planned something.
I didn't realize it was the 40th this year. I thought it was next year.
Anyway, when it comes to milestone anniversaries, what would you do for your parents or ILs?
As of now we are picking up take-out chinese for dinner and Dylan is going to pick something out.
Dylan said he is going to get them a Dora Game. :locolaugh

Stacy, anytime I've been to a 40th(or any anniversary) party it's been hosted by the kids :dunno:
this weather SUCKS!:angry2:
Stacy
April 22nd, 2006, 09:38 AM
Those are my feelings, Lisa but in Rick's family it's about the couple only.
It's the dumbest thing, imho. My parents are celebrating 35 years in October and I have already started to get ideas.
My grandparents are celebrating 64 years in July and my parents have an open house all set up.

Hi all..
Just about to head off to bed... I am a little disappointed we were supposed to have our bon voyage party tonight, we had a friend come in from another town for it and everything but we had to cancel because of poor Jacob being so sick. I didn't want to risk something going wrong with him. Thank god we did cancel though because he had a really rough night but is finally asleep. (its 11:40pm now) My girlfriend still came over but she just left to stay at her sisters house. It was great that she atleast got to see us, but a shame we couldn't have our party :blue:
the next 3 weekends are booked out so we won't be able to reschedule it.. Oh well we will have to have a "welcome home" party instead :heee:
Stacy I personally think with such a milestone the kids should throw something. All the big milestone parties I have been too were thrown by the children as well. If it wasn't for his parents getting together he wouldn't be here.. and secondly isn't it nice to do something like that for your parents

Poor Gav was up most of the night coughing. Nothing knocks him out, so he's stuck being miserable and awake. :(

April 22nd, 2006, 10:17 AM
OK I'm back now. Kai is outside doing yard work and I've been taking care of overtired kids.
Sorry about the party being cancelled Deb. :( And sorry about the sick kiddos and general lack of sleep with all of us this morning! At least it is the weekend.
Thanks for asking about our evening. It was OK. Kai was late which often happens, but that meant I got to hang out at my friend's 60th bd party longer than expected, so that was cool. It was all work friends and started right after work. Kai was ultra grumpy and kept waffling on what he wanted to do, but ultimately he opted for the movie and picked... NOTHING that anyone suggested! (I let him pick since he had a bad day.)
So we saw V for Vendetta. We missed the first couple of minutes and as I was sitting down I was turning my phone onto vibrate (can't have it off due to PNO/daycare) and making no noise and three people are started yelling at me! :errr: I wasn't bothering anyone at all or making noise or doing anything but they saw my phone and totally flipped.
In their defense I should have quit fumbling with it before I walked in. In my defense they scared the crap out of me and three people yelling at me (Kai was out getting popcorn) isn't my idea of fun. So when Kai came in we moved.
Anyway, it was a cool sci-fi flick, which I could say people would either love or hate. I liked it and it had cool music. Basically it's The Count of Monte Cristo/Brave New World with a new name and better effects.
Truth be told the ending was a bit dorky & predictable but I'm ok with that.
Anyone else seen it?
We're lounging today as we're all tired. Kai is doing yard work and tomorrow I have to go to the office for a bit.
Nichole
April 22nd, 2006, 10:23 AM
Trish, I agree that it's too early but I'm usually up by now regardless.
Sorry for the grumpy movie patrons, Bridget. They must have had a bad experience with cell phones at a movie. Is that movie the one with Natalie Portman? I've heard about it, but haven't seen it (and won't until it's on DVD, because we're lame  ).
Bridget
April 22nd, 2006, 10:26 AM
Yeah it's the one with Natalie Portman. I don't blame them for thinking I'd start talking on my phone, I just felt a little threatened but really I brought it on myself, so whatcha gonna do?
Caleb is obsessed with cheese again this morning. The kid's going to sprout a tail!

I have to go to the bank today by myself with the boys. It's a good thing Gav loves sitting in the P3 so much or I'd be dreading the trip. ;)

I registered for a bunch of bills online while he was sleeping. Cool, no more paper bills for me!
I'm going to see Inside Man with SIL and a couple of girls tonight.
Right now we're going to get ready and go for a picnic on the riverfront as it is :sunny: and it is supposed to :rain: tomorrow.
I hope Gavin, Ashley, Savannah and Jacob are feeling better. :hug99:

Its a great Sunny day here today (after a FREEZING NIGHT) Clare has your weather all of a sudden turned cold too? YIKES.
And we can't really go anywhere because Tony is on nightshift this week and has to be in bed by 2pm to get ready for that :blue: So I will be doing a food shop and then I might take the kids to my parents for a little play in the afternoon. :dunno: nothin exciting

Oh...and thanks for the feedback on the house listing or not listing situation. Well, except Stacy. :lol:Alyssa, don't you think you should wait to see about #4 first. :bolt:
We just know we want out of this town. And houses are taking longer to sell now. We sold the house last year after 3 days, though...but then we got caught in this big "contigency" cycle and then the market settled.
I am conversative and think we should wait, but Joe thinks we should go ahead. And since I really want to be out of here, I think maybe I should just suck it up. I mean, we have to live somewhere, right? So what difference would it make it I lost my job and we had to pay mortgage here v. a new place??

Well right now I drive a Mitsubishi Verada which is 14 years old  I've had it for 7 years. We bought it when I was pregnant with Emily. I definitely need to update and want a 7 seater so that we can take extra passengers. My problem is that I really don't know what I want. I don't really want a van or a huge 4 wheel drive. I doubt he'll actually buy anything today (although he has done that before but with his car  ) more likely will bring home a couple of choices and I'll say this one or that one :dunno: I'm just not a big car person and the thought of the auto show bores me to tears!

Oh you guys call them June bugs... We call them Christmas Beetles. They PLAGUE us in the middle of summer during Christmas time.
They love our fluro lights out the back and they all get into them but can't get back out and we have to take the trays off them and pour out all the dead ones its DISGUSTING!
During summer we have so many partys out the back and you can sit there and get slammed in the head by them, they are CRAZY!
Alyssa: that photo is so cute!!
I hope all your kiddo's are sleeping soundly... there seriously must have been something in the air!!
Clare: If you want a 7 seater, but not a van or 4WD what other option is there? a station wagon with seats the clip into the back?? if that's what you want I would get a Subaru Forrester!

My kids weren't crabby yesterday! :ura1: Alyssa, cute photo! :)

Maybe you're pregnant, Deb. :supergrin
Nice score on the playhouse, Dawn!
I have to make a Walmart & Costco run today. :errr: I skeered. The crowds are crazy busy during the weekends. I'd hold off a few days but we're out of most essentials, including milk. Can't go without those.

Our weather has been going bezerk.
On Thursday it was pleasant. On Friday it was chilly. On Saturday we had a heat wave (above 30 degrees). In the evening it turned into a sandstorm. And today is chilly and windy again. YAY...

Thanks girls. I'm really excited about the playhouse. :) Well, even though the yard is still upside down....they can't really play in it w/ the condition in it's (dirt piles from the work we're doing, big hole in the ground, etc. ) Can't wait till our yard is back to normal! :tearhair:They can play on one side of it though...under supervision.

Hey everyone (again! )
Well, I was all set to go to my parent's house with the girls. To find that I totally forgot that James took my car (he's at his brother's new house helping him fix some things)! He left his pick-up truck here, and I thought he took his truck. Darn! We were going to order some chinese at my mom's house. She's feeling a little sad (my little sister just moved out of there w/ her 2 kids. They got a house in PA). So for years my mom was use to the noise and being w/ them and it's only her and Dad now. Too quiet there she says.
SO.....I've invited them over here and we'll order chinese here! I've been craving chinese for a while (since that thread...thanks Mandi! And then again from the dinner thread. )
My mom also has to give me the 24 tape from last week (she tapes it for me when I work those nights since our VCR is on the outs). I hear that episode was soooo good. Can't wait to watch it tonight. I'm not on schedule to work tomorrow night :woo: which means I can finally watch 24 with James!!! They usually have me on schedule for Mon. nights.
Well, enough of me babbling.

First, whatever. You teased me about mulitiples so you're more evil than I am.
Second, Melayna had a puking bug for a week. When I started to get nauseous I thought it was that too. Soooo..... maybe AF won't show up for you either.

I'm glad that Chad is home, Trish! Alex went away for a week when I was 37 weeks pregnant with Sam. It was such a stressful week!
Deb, I hope you're not getting sick :crossfing
Dawn, great playhouse! Funny, I don't imagine yards in New York  I know you're not in Manhattan but still
Alex didn't buy a car. He made Harry sit in every 7 seater there though. I guess I'm going to have to go out looking b/c I really don't know what I want :dunno:

Well the weekend is over. :bawl: I had to work part of today but got my critical stuff done so I can stop having my stress attack.
Now I get to do late night tidying of the house for Frank the Painter Man's return tomorrow morning. (He's painting the interior of our house.)

The weekend is winding down here. I'm sheepishly admitting that I'm ready for it to be over. :shuffle: Brendon caught Gav's cold, so that on top of his regular horrible seasonal allergies is making him miserable. He just went to bed at 7:15pm. :faint:
I'm still grumpy even though I got to sleep in until 8:15 this morning. I think going to work will be a nice break for me.

Touche!
That happened with me and my suprise baby Jacob.. except insert nasty hangover for days intead of puking bug
You got me scared because I am actually on CD33 and I thought UH OHHHH.. but I tested just to be safe and it was a BFN! phew! I am still BFing so I am sure its just wacky because of that.. and hence I am thinking I am probably getting what Jacob had, although it hasn't really set in, just this underlying queezy feeling
Thanks Clare, me too!! I think you should definately go and look at some cars yourself!.. I love car shopping  Maybe if Alex gets the job we can go car shopping together :awink: :awink: :awink:
Nichole: I am so sorry your weekend was so rotten and the sickness is still hanging around!
Well we are half way through Monday here, Tony is on nightshift so he got home at 9am this morning just as I got back from dropping the kids off at daycare and we sat and watched the Melbourne comedy festival I taped for him last night and had a good laugh. Jacob seems to be getting better, still loose poos but no vomiting at all which is great!!
Tomorrow is a public holiday (Anzac day) for us so Tony doesn't have to go to work tonight.
