View Full Version : Is your 3½ - 4½ y.o. night trained?

Just curious.

Mason has been day trained since age 3 but he is nowhere near being night trained.

He is 4 years and 3 months old. Now that he finally sleeps through the night without waking up at all, he sleeps so hard that when he is not wearing 'night-time underwear' and he pees, he will sleep in the pee without noticing it. :dead:

He will often have dry night-time underwear but it is just as often wet and it doesn't seem to matter how often he goes pee before bed, nor does it seem to matter how much he drank before going to bed.

Ellie's the exact same way as Mason. Sometimes she wakes up dry and sometimes she wakes up soaked. :dunno: I figure she'll get it eventually. She's not going to college in Pull-ups, right?

Peyton is 3 years 9months old and just recently night trained. I honestly wasn't expecting it but after staying dry in her pull up at night we put the waterproof mattresspad on her bed and let her wear big girl panties over night. This all happened about a week ago and (knock on wood) she hasn't had an accident yet. We didn't push her at all and I didn't even think she'd be ready for awhile but I guess she was.

ETA: I just wanted to add that she's was day trained at the beginning of last July so getting to this point has taken awhile.

Both of my girls ( 2 1/2 & just now 4) are day & night time trained. It came easily for both of them. :dunno: But I could totally see how nighttime training would take longer. I wouldn't be overly worried about it just yet. Maybe just bring it up at the next Dr's apt. But I'm sure it's pretty common.

Matthew was night trained right after he was day trained. I think it's really common for night training to take much longer. Maybe getting him up in the middle of the night to go potty would help :dunno:

Maybe getting him up in the middle of the night to go potty would help :dunno:

Yes, but that would require me being up. Which I currently am every 2½ hours whether I want to be or not, and I'm usually trying to rush back to bed!

I could try this but seeing as I just got him to sleep through the night I'd rather not wake him up!

I'm not too worried about it; I figure it'll happen eventually. :) I have discovered though that the Huggies brand pull-ups are far superior to the Pampers brand.

Maia's night and day trained.

I'm sure my brother would just love to know that I'm sharing this info online, but he wet his bed for years after he was day trained. I'm not sure, but I want to say he was almost 7 before he outgrew it. The doctor's weren't worried about it. They said he just slept too deeply to realize what was happening.

Beverly, my son is 5yrs old and still has maybe a couple of accidents a month. He's a heavy sleeper like Mason, there is no way I can get him up and get him to the bathroom b/c that would mean that I would be carrying him to the bathroom passed out asleep.
And I feel like you, I really don't want to wake up more often and for a longer time than I need to. I just wish I could get Ian to sleep all night- every night
I do know, and he does too, that if he doesn't go to the bathroom right before he gets into bed he will have an accident.
I think Mason will get there, I'm really not worrying about it, I guess I would if he was every night but that's not the case.

All kids are different. Abby was day and night trained at the same time.

I agree...all kids are different. It does take some up till age 7 and that isn't 'abnormal'.

Aidan was day trained as of last July and he just became night trained back in Dec or Jan. We finally just decided to take the pullups away and we put on cloth-lined rubber training pants on him. We limit drinks after dinner (none, except for a sip of water at bedtime), and he goes potty at bedtime and then we take him potty again when we go to bed. I was worried about this, because he was always a crappy sleeper, but he never wakes up.
He still occasionally has accidents, but he gets up on his own and changes his pants. The training pants keep the pee from making it to his sheets 99% of the time :aok:

Alyssa

Both Aidan and Colin are night trained.

Aidan took about 2-3 months after he was fully pee & poop day trained (so he was a little before 3 1/2 when he was night trained) and Colin did it at the same time, about a month and a half after turning 3.

For a while, I was limiting after dinner drinking but I've stopped. I do ask them to pee before bed, however. And I've started to leave the bathroom light on for now because poor Colin is less than a month in and one night a couple weeks ago he peed in his pants because he was knocking at our bedroom door instead of the bathroom door because he got up to pee but was all disoriented. Poor thing. :(

Yep, Isabelle hasn't had a night accident (knock on wood) in about 6 months (since she turned 4)

Madelynn's not and probably won't be for awhile. She gets a cup of water at bedtime and I need to take that away before I even try.

I wet the bed till I was 6 or 7 too, so I'm not too worried about it.

gulp!
April 13th, 2006, 05:14 PM
Actually, Emma's run of waking up dry every morning is what finally prompted us to potty train her in the first place! She was day and night trained a month shy of turning 3. She's had an accident or two since then, though.

I've also heard that it's completely normal for kids to regularly wet the bed until age 6 or so, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Beverly, I'm so glad you posted this thread since we are going through it too. I got tired of changing sheets in the middle of the night or Alex coming into our bed because his was wet. Sometimes the pull-up is dry, other times it's soaked. We have taken away the water cup at night but that doesn't seem to help either. I just keep buying those pull-ups!

Same here Becky! I'm just pleased that Mason isn't worried about it. When the pictures are off he says, "Oh shoot! I'll put them in Graham's garbage." When they are still on he says, "All right!"

I'd let him go without the pull-ups but he's peed in his pj's before and slept in them until morning. :errr:

I thought David was going to be night trained a few months back. He initiated it and we went for it. It lasted about a week and a half. I had to get up every 2-3 hours to get him to the bathroom but sometimes he would still have accidents. Finally after a meltdown by him because he peed his pants I asked him if wanted to go back to wearing pull-ups. He just frowned and looked at the floor. I told him that it doesn't mean he is a baby it just means that he's a big boy who wears special underwear to bed. I told him how proud I was that he tried it and when he was ready we would try again. That night when we were getting ready for bed I asked him "underwear or pull-ups". He said, "pull-ups cause my weiner just pees sometime when I am sleeping". :lol2: He wakes up dry sometimes and other times soaking wet. I figure it will come when he's ready. I am not worried about it. His pediatrician said it's normal for his age.

It's great that they even have pull-ups and the Good Nights (or whatever they call them for the bigger kids). When my brother was going through this, there was no product like that. He'd just soak himself and the bed frequently. :( I know it had to suck for him... just because of the big production it caused to change the sheets and his clothes in the middle of the night. I'm glad that they have "special nighttime underwear" for kids these days.

Austin is just over 4 1/2...and still wears the Pullups at night..I think this * might* be our last pack though..He seems to have more dry than wet nights lately. As soon as I get a mattress cover I might try it, but I keep forgetting to get one for the full size bunk LOL.

Josh was just about the same age when he was night trained. DR said not to worry, don't limit drinks, don't make them get up in the middle of the night...just wait for his bladder to be mature enough to *know* when to wake up. Sure enough, it happened on its own!

Caroline was night-trained about six months after she had the hang of daytime pottying. We left it up to her; she was actually waking up dry most mornings, but still wanted to wear Pullups. We told her it was fine, but that we weren't going to buy anymore after this box was gone (not a serious threat, it was a brand-new box!), and so about a month in to that threat she said "okay, I want to wear big-girl panties to bed tonight."

Jayne

Alyssa is night trained. She was still wearing Pull-ups to bed back in the beginning of September when we went to Denver and was NEVER waking up dry. One night she said she wanted to wear her underwear to bed. I hesitated but we let her. Wouldn't you know she stayed dry and NEVER has had an accident. She wakes me up at all different times if she has to go (Not sure why when she can go by herself). We leave the light on in the bathroom for both she and Tylor.

I have to say that I had a HUGE problem growing up and was so afraid of it with my children. I was actually totally trained and then when I was 4 my sister was born. (sometimes a big event triggers this) I started wetting the bed and it wasn't until I was 13 that it stopped. Like stacy said there wasn't anything for me to wear to bed. I soaked everything. I was so humiliated. My 4 year younger sister and brother were both fine. It was awful. I couldn't stay at friends. My parents tried all sorts of gadgets but it finally just worked when I was 13.

cause my weiner just pees sometime when I am sleeping

OMG, I laughed so hard at this!!

Alex has been day trained since right before 3 years old. She has had stages were she has been dry for over a week then bam, back to wet at night. The last 2 nights she's been dry.... But she has milk at bedtime and we have to get rid of that before we can successfully and consistently have dry overnights.

But I'm not worried about it too much. Although I didn't wet the bed I did have bladder surgeries when I was younger -- my bladder was too small for my size. And I am very tolerant and understanding of not being able to "hold it."

Yes. Caroline has been night trained since she was 2 1/2. She did all her PT-ing pretty early. She drinks a ton of water at night, but goes potty before she goes to sleep or she wakes up. I agree all kids have their own timelines for this, b/c her night training was totally on her own timetable.

Lindsey has been day trained since she was a little over 2, but hasn't made it to night trained yet. There are some nights i do forget to put a pull up on her and she's slept in her underwear and has stayed dry all night, other times she wakes up in the middle of the nigth because she's wet the bed. She also still insists on having a cup of water in bed with her, so I need to work on that before we try night training. She's close to it though and I'll follow her lead.

I'm proud to update this and say that Ellie is now wearing undies to bed!! :woo: She went for about 2 weeks without an accident at night and when the Pull-ups were gone I told her we weren't going to buy any more. She's been wearing undies for about 4 nights now! So proud of my big girl!

Mason has been dry for several nights in a row too. We re-use the dry pull-ups so it's certainly cheaper. I'm thinking we'll go for underwear again soon too.

YAY Ellie!

Shoham is not night-trained yet and nowhere near it. She sleeps too deep. I was going to start working on it but then Yumi (7.5) had a digression and has been bedwetting almost every night for 3 weeks in a row.
We took him to a bedwetting clinic. The dr was horrible but some good things came out of it. 1) psychologically that must have given him a push because he has been dry ever since we were there (5th night in a row- YAY!!) 2) We were told that it is more than normal to bedwet until age 5 and later. It is also considered hereditary so if someone in the close family (parents, uncles aunts) had that issue, chances are he will too.
I agree that by the age of 7 it is extremely humiliating for the kid. That is the only reason we took Yumi to the clinic.

Christopher was night trained shortly after we got him day trained. He was not day trained until a couple of months after he turned three and easily transitioned into being night trained. I think he was in underwear at night by the time he was 3 1/2 and never had an accident. Patrick has been day trained since the beginning of the year ( two months before he turned three) and shows no sign of being night trained yet. He wakes up with a soaked diaper every morning.

As for us...NOPE...still soaking the bed 5 out of 7 nights:disbelief:.

I would say yes for the most part. Kaden is 3 yrs 2 months and there have been a few times where he wakes up slightly damp but rarely full on wet.

The worst thing for him is that he's addicted to sleeping with a cup of water (as everyone is the house is). I try not to let him drink too much before bed but it's such a habit for him.

He still usually wakes once a night around midnight and I make him go to the restroom. He often throws a fit and always claims he doesn't have to go. I just say, "I know, just sit there for a minute". He makes me go out and the second I walk out the door, he goes.

I did keep him in diapers at night for the first month or so after he started using the toilet. He didn't like the idea but I told him it was just for bedtime. I was too afraid of cleaning up that kind of mess. Once I saw that his diapers were dry, I let him sleep without diapers.

Mason's been dry for a long time. It just happened. More and more often the pullups were dry so we stopped using them.

We had the odd accident and when he woke up in the night and he refused to go pee I would say when we wake up at night that means we need to go pee.

Noah will be 5 tomorrow and he has the most trouble staying dry. He's been day trained for 1 1/2 years, but still has trouble at night. He hates the pullups though, so he usually just gets up and takes off wet underwear at night. I can always tell the nights he wets...he'll come out of his room naked.:disbelief

Maddie has been night trained for a couple months. She only has very infrequent accidents now.

From what a pediatrician from the Children's hospital here said on a local news program, boys have a harder time with night training and it isn't uncommon for it to take until they are 8 to be fully trained.

Well, if he's wetting the bed 5 nights a week, why don't you have him in a Pull-up?

He refuses to put one on unless he is REALLY exhausted. Even if he did where the pull up..he pees right through it. We stop liquids at 5:30 (2.5 hrs before bed), pees before bed, lift him before we go to sleep and he still floods the bed without waking up sometimes. He is a really deep sleeper!

I might give the pullup nighttime pants or those goodnites a try. Hopefully he will wear them :crossfing:.

I am taking Yumi to a clinic that specializes in bedwetting.
The dr there tld me not to expect anything from kids younger than 5-6 years old regarding the nighttime.
While some kids manage to be TT at night, it is not uncommon and prefectly normal for kids up to the age of 5-6 not to be able to control their bladder at night.
Shoham is nowhere near being TT at night. But since this is also a heredetary issue, I am not worried at all. I know *I* was not fully TT at night until I was 5-6.

She had one night that she woke up literally in tears because she had tried to go to the potty and was tired that she didn't get up on the toilet all the way and she peed straight out onto her feet and the floor  I shouldn't laugh but it was funny! We cleaned that up and since then we haven't had a problem at all!

Our son is almost 5 and still is not night trained. He was doing pretty well for a few months so we had him in underwear at night with just the occasional accident, but it has gotten worse the last few months so we're back to pull-ups. He pees probably 4 or 5 nights a week, sometimes enough that it goes through the pull-up.

We've talked to him about waking up and going into the bathroom if he needs to pee at night but he says he dreams that he is in the bathroom standing in front of the toilet and so he pees. I guess there's not much we can do about that one.

I'm tired of buying pull-ups too, so I told DS this is the last pack of "real" pull-ups (with Toy Story or Cars characters on them). From now on I'm buying the Target brand.

Olivia is 4 1/2 and still wears pull-ups at night. When she was first trained at 3 years exactly, she was day and night trained. Then all of the sudden she started waking up wet every morning. I tried everything to help her stay dry and she just wouldn't, so, we are back in pull-ups.

Alot of mornings she wakes up dry so I *think* we may be on our way. Just yesterday I was telling her that I needed to get her some more pull-ups. She told me that she didn't need pull-ups anymore because she could wear her panties to bed. :woa: I put her in a pull-up anyway and this morning she woke up SOAKED!!! She absolutely flooded the bed. Her pull-up was soaked, as was her gown and the bed clothes. I'm really anxious to get her night trained and to get rid of the pull-up expense. I already have to buy Kaden the most expensive brand diapers, Pampers, because he leaks out of EVERY other diaper we have tried!! I buy the White Cloud brand pull-ups but they are still expensive!!

Deb, why don't you try to put undies on the outside of his pullups, Aiden hated wearing the pullups too and kept telling me it was because he was a big boy and didn't need them, but he kept wetting the bed so I told him that big boys wear undies but while he keeps wetting the bed he needs to wear the pull ups under the undies. It did the trick. (plus it helped that it had buz lightyear on the pullups  )

As for Aiden who is 4years 1 month old he is NO where near ready to be night trained. It's frustrating cause he can go really well and have a dry pull up, then they will be soaked. He goes to daycare twice a week and they put them down for naps and every 2 or so weeks he will wet himself during that nap. It seems to happen while he is waking, he gets disorientated and pee's.

As for Riley who is 2 3/4 yrs I can't even get him to be day trained, very frustrating!

Kenzie was day trained at 2, which came super easy for her. She is still not night trained and will be 4 next month. :( We are trying really hard right now, but she keeps having accidents. Ian has no interest either. Once in a while, I can get him to sit on the toilet, but that's about it.

Mellissa, I wouldn't worry about it either. Ellie was almost 4.5 when she finally stayed dry at night. My ped said it's really not uncommone for kids not to night train until 5 or 6 years old.
