View Full Version : Show me your kitchen!
JillMelissa February 21st, 2004, 03:04 PM I'm having a terrible time deciding what to do with our kitchen - which cabinet finish, what sort of countertops and island... ugh. I'd love to see some pics of everyone's kitchens to try to give me some inspiration!!
AahRee February 22nd, 2004, 01:29 AM Jill, I don't have a picture, but I can describe what we just ordered, if that helps! Our cabinets are a natural maple finish, and the counter is a slate-look tile. The backsplash goes up the whole wall between the counter and the cabinets, instead of just a little row and then plain wall. Our island has the same countertop on it, and has seating on one side. I'll take a picture in May when we move in, but the description will have to do for now!
Brooke February 22nd, 2004, 08:26 AM You don't want to see mine! It's only 7ft by 11ft, only big enough for one person. If you stand at the sink and turn around, you're at the stove. We painted the cabinets green and we havd a butcher block countertop. No island, where would we put one? No dishwasher either... Obviously, we didn't buy the house for the kitchen. One day, I'll get an addition with a kitchen/family room combo but right now I've got to live with what I've got.
Here's a photo. Imagine a stove and fridge on the wall opposite the cabinets.

Shel February 22nd, 2004, 08:45 AM Here is ours. We built our house, and it was such a pain deciding on everything. Our counters are a light grey/blue marble and we painted a light blue/grey and white marble look on the walls and went with blue and white toile decorations. The pictures are a little squished so it looks so much smaller than it really is

kim February 22nd, 2004, 02:08 PM we didn't build our house (too much work for lazy me  )
my kitchen is almost the entire back of the main part of the house. i believe it is 14x24 including the eating area.
the cabinets are maple. the stove is in the 'L'...it's a jenn aire and vents down so you don't need an ugly hood! the countertops are a forest green formica, they 'crackle finished' the backsplash and that paint above the cabinets is the same crackle. i hate it. although i'm the only person who does. everyone seems to love it. i'm pretty much stuck with it though.

Stacey February 22nd, 2004, 03:20 PM Here's ours. Our kitchen is the same as it was when we bought the place. I love it though, so it's not changing.:)
I think the colors are a little off in the first picture. The cabinets aren't quite that dark.

LisaBelle February 22nd, 2004, 06:00 PM Mine is nothinh compared to these.... Stacey, I love yours... esp. the color of the walls.
I live in a townhouse... these are the standard cabinets. The prior owner put in the Pergo floor... which I love!

Stacey February 23rd, 2004, 08:57 PM Thanks, Lisa. :) The kitchen and the backyard are what really sold me on this house. :)
AahRee February 23rd, 2004, 09:45 PM Stacey, is your floor tile, or vinyl? It looks like tile in the picture, but it's hard to tell for sure. I've been totally re-thinking my kitchen (Jill, your angst is rubbing off on me) and I'm now leaning towards doing more of a French Country-type kitchen instead of all that slate. I decided it's too masculine. And since DH sent ME to pick everything out, I might as well pick what I like, right? ;)
EricaMG February 24th, 2004, 08:36 AM Everyone has such nice kitchens!! And they're sparkling clean!
I'd happily post a picture of mine, but that means I'd actually have to clean it!!!! Whine...

Nadine February 24th, 2004, 08:44 AM Hi,
Funny, I just took pixs of the whole apartment a few days back. So I'll post the kitchen pixs here.
We designed it when we built the apartment. The cabinets are out of cherry wood. It is a tiny kitchen but I love it.
Oh- Erica, I took the pixs after the cleaning lady was here....
(Oh- the bottles are on the counter because the washing machine leaked and that'swhere they usually stand. I had to put them away. And I didn't put the groceries away before taking the pix... Look at me, apologizing for my usual mess after bragging about having a clean house... )
Stacey February 24th, 2004, 10:13 AM Anne - Yep, it is tile. That's so cool that Phil's letting you pick everything out.
kim February 24th, 2004, 10:17 AM nadine i love your cabinets!
Lette February 24th, 2004, 10:48 AM I need to take a better shot of the whole kitchen, but here's one that gives you an idea of our tile and cabinets. :)

Lette February 24th, 2004, 09:28 PM Okay, I took a few more tonight. :) Excuse the mess!

Stacey February 24th, 2004, 10:13 PM Lette, it is so weird looking at your kitchen. It's set up exactly like ours. Everything's in the same spot. We even both have the tiles in the shape of a diamond on the backsplash.
Shel February 24th, 2004, 10:20 PM How unsafe Lette, lettting Lexie sit on the cabinets by herself :nono: Call CPS
 (just kidding. Don't anyone call CPS)
Nadine February 25th, 2004, 01:59 AM nadine i love your cabinets! Thanks, Kim.
I like them, too....
SarahK February 25th, 2004, 08:44 PM Here is our kitchen--ignore the blue painters tape on the far left door opening...we obviously haven't finished painting! The cabinets are oak and the counters are laminate--but it's a pretty nice laminate...I actually like it. I really like our sink--it's a big ceramic double-sided one. Much nicer than the metal one we had in our condo. Oh, and you can eat at the edge of the counter at the bottom of the picture, but we don't have any bar stools. I'm not sure we're going to get them...I like the idea of eating there, but in reality, I don't think it's very toddler friendly--the kitchen opens out onto the family room (that's where I stood to take the picture.)

~Jenn February 26th, 2004, 11:24 AM Okay, well, I really, really like how our kitchen turned out...we pretty much customized the house floor plan to how we wanted it, so it's all very open, but the kitchen/eating area/family room are the main area of our house.
Standing in the coming into the kitchen (living room is sort of over my right shoulder, front entrance sort of to my left), and you can sort of see the eating area as well...

http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4dc07b3127cceb91e69be7e640000001610
Taken from the eating area, behind me is the patio door. The table doesn't match at all...it's from the old house, I've been VERY slow about decorating the house (we still have bare windows downstairs, and we've been here 4 months! )...
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4dc07b3127cceb91e69bfff550000001610
The cabinets are sort of a cherry/maple colour (I can ask Dh, he remembers way better!) and the counter top sort of looks like a slate (trust me, it's NOT!), with blacks/beiges/browns/hints of gold/copper in it. Backsplash is a very simple beige tile and the floor is also a natural cherry/maple colour. One thing that I really like, which you likely can't see very well (I was tempted to take a picture, but thought that would be dorky!) are the drawer and cabinet pulls...they are of a copper finish, and match really well with the colour scheme. We were going to get the stainless steel look ones, but saw these, and loved them!
I love these kinds of threads! Okay, now I have to go and take everything out of it's hiding place where I shoved it to take these pictures!
ValG February 28th, 2004, 06:08 PM We finished a remodel of our kitchen back in August, I love being in there now. We went with granite countertops, oak cabinets with some glass inserts (I highly recommend, it keeps the space more open feeling!) and stainless appliances. We didn't change any of the layout, just updated from 1982. I love the granite if you can do an upgrade, it's so much easier to work with knowing that even I can't really hurt it

Faye February 29th, 2004, 09:12 AM wow, all these kitchens are great :) We just moved and here are some pics of our new kitchen. I love it because it is very spacious and very light and fresh and not too dark. our old kitchen didn't have much light at all. there isn't really anything special about it, but I love it because it's all mine.
Carmen March 2nd, 2004, 09:38 PM We had new cabinets installed when we moved here last year, but we still haven't gotten around to replacing the floor.

AahRee March 2nd, 2004, 09:44 PM Val, I LOVE the glass inserts in your cabinets. I really wanted to do that in our new house, but it was a pretty expensive upgrade, and all you got for your $$$ was two lousy glass-inserted cabinet doors. But someday (20 or so years from now...) I'll replace a bunch of my cabinet doors with glass-inserted ones. I looovvveeee that look!
ValG March 4th, 2004, 05:57 PM Thanks Anne! I agree, if you're building new, they take every drop of blood they can from you  We used Home Depot for our renovations, highly recommend, plus their prices are pretty good.

catalina April 16th, 2004, 04:11 PM Cortney, your kitchen looks almost like the one I had when I lived in Monterrey!
This is my kitchen now, too small for me
ShannonR April 16th, 2004, 05:23 PM Here's my kitchen! I LOVE my backsplash. The only way to get a decent pic is to take it from the loft.
JillMelissa April 16th, 2004, 09:18 PM Shannon, I love your backsplash too! :)
That's the one thing I don't like about my kitchen in my new house - it won't have a backsplash. Actually, I think it will have a TINY backsplash in the same laminate as the countertops but I want a full backsplash, up to the cabinets. Guess that will be my first home-improvement project!
cimberdog April 21st, 2004, 09:07 PM Val - very pretty! I'm jealous of your wine grotto!!!

SarahK April 21st, 2004, 10:32 PM Kelli, your kitchen is beautiful...and your family room looks great too!
jenr812 April 24th, 2004, 12:13 PM I love looking at kitchens. Yours are all gorgeous! :) We have been talking about updating ours. We plan to build a new home when I'm done with Nursing school and I'm working, so this thread is great for ideas. I love all the backsplashes! We want to update our current kitchen before we move to get a better deal when we sell. I think we're basically going to just replace the cabinet doors and the pantry door and replace the counters. The floor was almost new when we moved in but may need replacing before we move because my chairs are scratching the heck out of it  Anyway, thanks for letting me peek at your kitchens :)
Bobbie April 24th, 2004, 03:03 PM It's so fun to look at kitchens -- you have some really pretty ones. :) Here's the kitchen in our new house. It took me a long time to decide between a dark gray countertop and a lighter blue-gray one. I'm glad we went with the lighter one. Our appliances are bisque and black. The cabinetry is maple and the hardware is weathered nickel.

Kimmy0712 May 24th, 2004, 08:36 PM Here is our kitchen. We just had the house remodles in October 03. We open up the kitchen and made a bed room the dining room since we did not have one.

So sorry I never even got notification, it wasn't really hard, dh would probably disagree lol but by not going with a diamond pattern with the small tiles it saved on cutting(dh bought a cheap water saw $40) the diamond/square above the stove was pre-made(HomeDepot $19.99CDN) he stuck that on first and went around it. HTH :)

We're in the process of laying out our kitchen plans! :) We need to do it before we have the addition put on. So I was just looking at these pics trying to get some ideas. :)
Question for those with islands: Do you have a stove top on there? Why or why not? Are you happy with it? I'm not sure if I want to go that route, a wall oven route or a basic free standing stove. ??
Thanks! :)

I hope you don't mind but I totally stole your pictures for my design book! I save pictures and clippings of things that I want to do in my house and your kitchen is fabulous.
Ditto! I did the same thing. And actually, it was this picture that made us decide to do our sink caddy corner like this with a window on each side so we can look out the backyard. With the space we're working with when we redo our kitchen (expanding it as well), a sink in the corner like that would have been most beneficial for us.
Lette November 2nd, 2005, 10:22 AM We're getting geared up to redo our kitchen (It's 13 years old! :woa: ) , so I thought I'd pop in here again!
There are so many choices for cabinets (love the multi-level pull out drawers) and counter and flooring!!
Great pictures everyone! Keep 'em coming! I need lots of ideas!
