View Full Version : How long will you let your little girl's hair get?
Mandi March 24th, 2006, 12:22 PM Micayla is due for another haircut.. her bangs are getting long. Anyway, she's got very long hair. It's probably about 2/3 the way down her back. And that's after I had them cut a few inches off last time we went.
I think that I won't let it get much longer than it is right now. She's great about letting me brush it and put it into pony tails or a braid, but it is alot of extra work.
Micayla's got quite a few preschool friends who's parents cut their hair fairly short... shoulder length or less. I can see the appeal of that as far as upkeep, but I wouldn't do it. I loved having long hair as a kid and Cayla seems to like it too.
Anyway, just curious what everyone else felt about it.
JustJen March 24th, 2006, 12:24 PM I was just thinking about this yestarday when doing Lily's hair. It's just at the top of her bottom/bottom of her back. I wanted to cut it into a bob without bangs for kindergarten next year, so her bangs are getting long and scraggly. I've just been putting it into braids and pinning back her bangs.
Barb March 24th, 2006, 12:27 PM Well, as you know Norah has a whole bunch of hair. It's getting hard to take care of, but I just cannot bring myself to cut it. I don't know yet how long I'll let it get. I'll cross that bridge when she can sit on her hair.
kim March 24th, 2006, 12:27 PM i have gianna's cut. i may let it grow when she gets a bit older but i think she looks cute with short hair.
this is her about two weeks ago. she is overdue for a haircut

Barb March 24th, 2006, 12:28 PM OK, that is a cute haircut. I like how it's still wavey and feminine.
Shanna March 24th, 2006, 12:29 PM I have trimmed the girls' bangs, but I plan to let their hair grow long, as long as it is manageable  I've got naturally curly hair and all three of mykids' hair is stick straight  I'm living vicariously through them!
Jenn March 24th, 2006, 12:36 PM We grew Peyton's bangs out and until recently her hair was almost down to the middle of her back. The problem with her hair was that it is so thin that it just got so stringy and it would break so easily so we decided to cut it. It now falls just to her shoulders in a little bob and it looks so much healthier and is so much easier to deal with.
Lindsey's hair is a lot different than Peyton's. It's much thicker so I can see us growing it out longer. I love long hair on little girls but Peyton's hair just couldn't handle being long. I think it's just too delicate.
TtownAnne March 24th, 2006, 12:36 PM Caroline has a ton of hair, and no bangs. I kept her hair relatively short for a while, however
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5dd01b3127cce90eab836f6fd00000026109CaMmbFm1c
(just-above-chin bob)
due to her refusal to allow me to do anything other than put a barrette in it, and a penchant for morning knots. However, she desperately wanted her hair long enough to get all up into a ponytail (instead of just pulling back the top/sides) so now we're about to this point:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6dd36b3127cce97916ddcff9300000016109CaMmbFm1c
But I don't envision it getting much longer than her shoulders until she's patient enough to let me do things with it.
Bev March 24th, 2006, 12:37 PM May I butt in as a mother of only boys? :blush1:
My SIL had her daughter's hair quite long, to the middle of her back, but my niece would not allow it to be in barrettes, or ponytails or off her face in any way. It was awful! I think SIL had it long to satisfy her own needs.
Finally Miranda asked to have it cut and it is now a very cute little chin length bob with bangs. Though I must admit she is not as cute as Gianna! :)
I don't know what I would do if I had a girl. :)
sheila March 24th, 2006, 12:47 PM I am struggling with what I should do with Maggie's hair right now. She hates to have it brushed, and even with 3 Minute Miracle every time it gets washed, her hair gets really tangled. I want to cut it short for the summer (pool=wet often=potential hair hell) but I am nervous because her hair is pretty curly/wavy. Since my hair is/was stick straight, I have no idea how to handle her hair.
Missy&Maggie March 24th, 2006, 12:59 PM Maggie has stick straight, asian-kid hair. She has bangs, but I've been letting the back grow out. It goes about 2 inches past her shoulders now, and I am thinking about cutting it back to a little bob for the summer. She's not big on ponytails and I am not the best hairdresser in the world, so I think we might cut it again. I had a chin length bob until 1st grade when I begged my mother to grow my hair longer.
Theresa March 24th, 2006, 01:35 PM Ellie has bangs and the back is about 1/2 down her back right now. I love it and could never cut it short! To me, little girls are supposed to have long hair. She does give me a hard time about washing it, but it's no harder to wash if it's long or short. She wears it down a lot and it's so straight and pretty!
Jayne March 24th, 2006, 01:40 PM Alyssa's hair is LONG. I love it. She has some wave to it and the ends bob up. Her hair is just about at her pants line! I am sure that is about how long I will let it be. it is so beautiful and she will let me do anything with it. She will even sit for over 45 minutes while I curl it. I love her hair and won't get it cut short until she asks me to.
Karri March 24th, 2006, 01:49 PM Anne- I really like Caroline's this length. It really compliments her face :aok:
For now, I plan to keep Norah's at all one length, just a tad below chin length. Right now, its terribly thin and tangly (just like her mama's) and I can't deal with combing it. Its a struggle every morning as it is. Someday, I'd love for it to be longer, but we'll have to see if it gets thicker or not. If we do let it go longer, I'd never go longer than what would be bra-strap length (if she wore one  ). Longer than that is too much for me.
Cortney March 24th, 2006, 01:53 PM Morgan's hair has been all over the place- but currently it's about halfway down her back. I don't have a 'cut-off' point (no pun intended!)
Raelyn on the other hand- I would rejoice if hers would grow past the baby fuzz length.
kim March 24th, 2006, 01:54 PM Finally Miranda asked to have it cut and it is now a very cute little chin length bob with bangs. Though I must admit she is not as cute as Gianna! :)
 thank you!
i like caroline's hair too .
btw, i don't comb/brush G's hair at all. i will run a pick thru it when wet (mainly for the scalp massage benefit) but otherwise i don't touch it.
magoo March 24th, 2006, 02:00 PM I keep Anna's cut in a short bob with bangs. She hates any kind of clip, bow, ribbon, etc. in her hair, hates getting it washed, and hates getting it brushed, so it just makes sense.
gulp! March 24th, 2006, 02:12 PM I had high hopes that Emma was going to have that long hair with the natural curls in it. However, her hair is just too thin still. Her hair is quite curly, but when it gets long, it just gets out of control and just looks terrible. As much as we hated to do it, we got it cut short (not quite chin length) so that it was better balanced and the curls looked more under control. It does look better that way. (Actually, it looks a lot like Gianna's except with no bangs).
To answer the OP specifically, I'd be o.k. with letting my daughter's hair get to the middle of her back. Any longer than that, and I would imagine it's just a pain in the butt to deal with.
Bonnie March 24th, 2006, 02:21 PM I didn't have Caroline's cut until this past November and we just did another cut last week. Her hair is sort of curly, but more wavy I think... Her hair now is probably 2 inches past her shoulders and it is a nice length on her. She wears it in braids and ponytails a lot or sometimes just pulled back off of her face in a hair tie. My mom had me in short hair most of my young childhood, and I was frequently mistaken for a boy. It sucked. I was tomboyish and with 3 older brothers tended toward more boyish clothes, but still, it sucked.
Courtney does not have a ton of hair yet. I think b/c of her face shape, she will look very cute with a cut like TTown Anne's Caroline or Karri's Norah... a short all one length bob. We aren't there yet. I'm just glad she finally grew some hair.
And of course, Tatum is mostly bald.
As for the original question, I think mid-back is about as long as I'd let it go and that is on the long side.
Amy March 24th, 2006, 03:12 PM Emily's is at mid back right now. I had bangs cut the first week of January, and LOVE it. The back of her hair has been trimmed twice in her life, and this is the longest I'll let it grow I think. She's really good about letting me do her hair (I do their hair while they eat breakfast) and loves her korkers I've made, so I don't want to cut it too short...gotta show off her bows!! That being said, I'll have it cut to almost shoulder length in May, for our vacation to the beach. I still want to be able to put it in a ponytail or two, but I think she'll be happier with some of the weight gone.
Molly hasn't had a cut yet, and she'll be 2 at the end of April. Her hair is just now starting to grow. Emily could wear two pony tails at 18 months, but not Miss M! I pull her bangs over and do a Pebbles ponytail above her left ear, which looks adorable. Hers is super curly in the back, so I may trim it this spring before vacation.
Hilary March 24th, 2006, 03:28 PM I just cut Madelynn's when it starts to look scraggly. I'd love for her to have long hair, but once it gets to a certain point it just looks bad.
Suzi March 24th, 2006, 03:30 PM Julia's hair is long and I will continue to let it go. I just had about 3" cut off (I am evening out her hair to all one length) and it is still to her mid-back or a little longer. She is fairly good about letting me brush it out - she has very fine hair but TONS of it, just like mine. When I was little my hair was typically just above my waist and that's probably when I would draw the line with Julia.
Stacey March 24th, 2006, 03:30 PM When Maia was younger her hair used to be a lot like Caroline's shorter bob. Once it grew a little, we realized that it was curlier than we thought. Now it's about five inches past her shoulders. It's just above where a bra strap would be. Even though Maia's good about letting me fix it, I don't think I'd let it get too much longer. That's only because I don't think it would look good on her.
If my daughter had the right type of face and hair for it - and she let me fix it - I'd let it get just below mid-back, I think.
Kara March 24th, 2006, 04:27 PM May I butt in as a mother of only boys?
LOL! Another mom of boys..but my SIL has a girl..and my neice would fight her on EVERYTHING..so she cut it and it actually suits her face MUCH better...If I ever have a girl, it will depend on what looks best and if she is agreeable to taking care of it..
I have it easy right now i guess, LOL, just buzz it off for the boys!
JustJen March 24th, 2006, 06:02 PM Can I ask a quesiton...somewhat OT, but I'll ask anyway.
Would you be pissed if you MIL cut your kids hair?
WITHOUT asking?
Every time I leave them with her she cuts their damn hair. Lily had been growing her bangs out forever and we would just clip them back and then one hour with MIL and she cut her SUPER short bangs. One time she buzzed the boys hair. Because they were HOT?!? In Oregon, In spring. Yep, SOOOOO hot.
Lily's trying to grow her bangs out again for Kindergarten. I'm so scared to leave her with MIL cuz my guess, she's cut them AGAIN.
Bev March 24th, 2006, 07:09 PM I would be well and truly pissed Jen. And you would hear the reaction across the country! I'm lucky though, my MIL would never do that.
Silke March 24th, 2006, 07:14 PM Jen, I would be totally pissed.
Answering the original question:
I am afraid, mine is not a little girl anymore. Natascha had hair in various lengths, from chin length to mid back. I would allow her to grow her hair all the way down to the lower back as long as she does something with the hair (pony tail, braids, hair band...) and takes care of it. I had hair that long at her age. I have been trying to convince her to cut it a bit shorter though since it shows her beautiful face much better. No such luck yet
Amy March 24th, 2006, 07:25 PM Jen, I would be so beyond pissed. My own mother knows not to do that, and she was a licensed beautician for years. I usually will ask her to trim E's bangs, and a few weeks ago I'd forgotten to mention it when I dropped the girls off before class. Thankfully, my dad called my cell to see if it was OK if Mom trimmed then, and I said yes. She told me later that Dad had asked her if she should cut Molly's hair (see above post...she has not yet had a hair cut) and bless her heart...she told him no because she didn't think it'd been cut yet.
Have you told her this is NOT to happen again? I'm sure you have, but maybe reinforce it with a threat to not leave the kids with her.
Karri March 24th, 2006, 07:45 PM Jen - I would be beyond livid. And I would have let her know the first time it happened never to touch my kids hair again. I would just reinforce that it is not her biz to cut it.
Silke...oh i dread the day i no longer have a say
Clare March 24th, 2006, 07:49 PM Jen - that is just wrong. Personally I wouldn't let her see the kids.:angry2:
To answer the original question, the longest Emily's hair has been is mid back which I think is the longest I'd let it get. She has thick, thick hair like me and it gets really heavy. She did ask to have it cut into a shortish bob about 18 months ago which I really liked and we got lots of compliments on, but she's decided that she wants to grow it again now. It's just below her shoulders now.
Silke March 24th, 2006, 07:51 PM Silke...oh i dread the day i no longer have a say
Yeah, watch it....they get opinionated before you know it. I was under no hair cutting orders from Kindergarten on
Brooke March 24th, 2006, 08:25 PM I just had Rebekah's hair cut last week. It was just past her shoulders and now it's right below her ears. It's stick straight and thin and she won't let me do anything with it. She doesn't like it on her neck when she's hot so I wanted to cut it for the summer. She loves it short! And it's so cute!
I don't have any of the photos off my camera yet (our computer crashed last weekend) so I can't post them.
kim March 24th, 2006, 09:17 PM Can I ask a quesiton...somewhat OT, but I'll ask anyway.
Would you be pissed if you MIL cut your kids hair?
WITHOUT asking?
ask Ami :lol2: her crazy mil did it once to her daughter. once.
i'm nearly positive it was Ami. my mind is foggy.
TtownAnne March 24th, 2006, 09:22 PM Related story to this, maybe will make you feel a bit better. When I was about 3, I had a Spanish babysitter, who had a pet parrot that I was enamored with. Well, the parrot came with pets of its own. Yes, headlice. In my mid-back-length, thick, auburn, Shirley-Temple-curley hair. (yes, dammit, I was a cute kid! ) Being the 1970s, this was when they still used the nasty lye shampoo. Unfortunately it wasn't working too well because I had so much hair. So the pediatrician suggested my mom cut my hair a bit, to give the lice "less ground", kwim? So they cut my hair up to my shoulderblades. More lye shampoo, still not working, another haircut recommended. Cute bob just above my shoulders. The *babysitter* decided that she was tired of all the back-and-forth about it, tired of checking my hair, and she and her husband SHAVED ME. :woa: I'm not talking about a wispy pixie cut, I'm talking about CUE BALL, SQUEAKY CLEAN BALD. On a three-year old!
I don't remember this event, but the one thing I do remember is my mother's steam whistle screams when she came to pick me up that day. I spent the summer in hats - baseball caps, flowered things, Mom let me wear whatever struck my fancy. How could she do otherwise, right? And my Christmas pictures from that December show cute little 3-year old me, red velvet dress, white tights, and hair about 2.5 inches long all over my head. :shuffle:
Would you be pissed if you MIL cut your kids hair?
WITHOUT asking?
kim March 24th, 2006, 09:29 PM omg anne. that is a terrible story! your mom must have been LIVID!!!!!
gulp! March 24th, 2006, 09:38 PM :jawdrop: :jawdrop:
Nocona March 24th, 2006, 09:48 PM I just hope Sara has hair someday :shuffle:
I think it totally depends on the kid's hair. If it's thick, longer can look cute. If it's thin, it tends to look shaggy if it gets long. I had no hair until I was 2-3 and by the time I was 4 and in kindergarten I could sit on it. I hated it. I hate it chopped the summer before second grade and I think my mom cried (my sister and I both wanted our hair short and she let us both get it cut).
I think just below the shoulders would be good and manageable. We'll see though... what do I know
Clare March 24th, 2006, 09:55 PM OMG Anne! I'm assuming you got a new babysitter?
Anyone else reminded of the Desperate Housewives episode when Lynette's kid had his head shaved and everyone assumed he was going through chemo? Your parents could have got some good mileage out of that
Mandi March 24th, 2006, 10:09 PM i'm nearly positive it was Ami. my mind is foggy.
Yeah, it was Ami. :)
Anyway... ouch, Anne! I'd have been beyond furious!! What did your Mom do to the sitter?
Interesting what everyone thinks about hair length. I'm unsure what I'll end up doing with Melayna. She's got such fine curly hair. It's a tad past her shoulders now and looks cute. I guess I'll wait and see how it looks as it gets longer.
Oh and if Micayla told me she wanted it cut I would. She just seems to like it long.
Karly March 24th, 2006, 11:49 PM I'll let her hair get as long as it will get. I will never cut it.
Mandi March 24th, 2006, 11:51 PM I'll let her hair get as long as it will get. I will never cut it.
That's b/c of your religious beliefs though, right? What about bangs?
JustJen March 25th, 2006, 02:06 AM Related story to this, maybe will make you feel a bit better. When I was about 3, I had a Spanish babysitter, who had a pet parrot that I was enamored with. OMG!! I hope that effin babysitters ass got fired!!
Ok, I feel a bit better, bangs I can deal with, cue ball freakin bald, I'd rip her a new one. MIL, babysitter, who-the-f-ever!!!
Thanks for the empathy everyone. Jim insisted that it wasn't a big deal, but c'mon, my kid, my choice in when and how to cut her damn hair.
I think the bob will look cute. I always show Lily pics of Bretta's blondie with her gorgeous bob and Lily loves it.
We'll have to make a special day of it.
Theresa March 25th, 2006, 06:45 AM Oh, Anne! That's awful! Thank God that hair grows back.
Karri March 25th, 2006, 09:31 AM OMG, Anne! OMG! Did you find a new babysitter??
Karly - I am curious about the same Q Mandi asked...can you cut bangs?
TtownAnne March 25th, 2006, 09:40 AM Honestly, I don't remember whether I went back to that babysitter or not. My parents were fairly young so they may not have been making enough money to be able to pull me out for a bit while they looked for someone else. My dad told me once that he threatened to kill Sylvia, though.
The worst part, my mother said, was that as my hair grew back, it wasn't the same. It was light brown instead of red, and barely wavy instead of curly.
Karly March 25th, 2006, 06:02 PM Mandi & Karri - No, bangs are still cut hair, so I won't give her bangs.
Shel March 25th, 2006, 07:24 PM We waited and waited for Riley to get hair. Only she got thin, wispy, strings for hair and not normal hair. It was constantly in her face with horrible fly aways, bugging her and me, so she just went and got a bob a couple of weeks ago. It's a little shorter than I wanted it, but it's cute.
Sherry April 1st, 2006, 11:46 PM Ok I am about to cry.. Bianca will be 3 in august and has YET to have a hair cut.. the longest part is in the back and its only about 3 inches long... :bawl:
Nadine April 2nd, 2006, 12:56 AM Interesting thread. I was just pondering what to do with Shoham's hair as we are going to the hairdresser today.
Shoham's hair is curly/wavy. I like it when she has bangs because it makes her hair look neater and it frames her face nicely. The last time we trimmed her length was exactly 2 years ago. It was her first and only haircut. Since she has curly hair, it doesn't look as long as it really is. When her hair is wet, it covers 2/3 of her back. When it is dry, it covers 1/3 of her back.
She is very good about having ponytails and such. If I had the time for it, she'd want me to braid them every day. I won't let her go to PS without putting it in a ponytail or something. Chances of catching lice are much bigger without.
Anyway - I was not even thinking about cutting her hair until last week. But since we had this lovely visit of headlice and it took me almost a week to get her head clean again (not to mention that she got infected AGAIN when she was already clean after 2 days) ... I found myself thinking that if I was not able to get rid of them... I'd have her hair cut. I must say that she was awesome and cooperative and let me comb her hair without as much as a sound. But still.... It is HARD to comb such long hair.
So ... since she has very firm opinions regarding ...uhm ... everything LOL I will let her call the shots regarding the length of her hair. (Until it reaches her bottom that is ...) UNLESS we have another lice attack. Then I might reconsider.
Colleen April 4th, 2006, 10:38 AM I love Avery's hair long and she's been great about letting me style it, so as long as it's manageable, we'll keep it long. I've found that if I use a good shampoo and conditioner on it (not kids shampoo) it looks and feels better and doesn't get stringy. Right now, the longest part of her hair is about 1/3 down her back.
Sabrina's hair is growing a lot faster than Avery's did. I've already given her a few bang trims, and the back is filling in nicely.
Cami April 8th, 2006, 06:47 PM Addison's hair is down to the bottom of her back. I don't really have any plans to cut it so I guess we'll just let it grow until it bothers her or she decides she wants it cut.
Aubrey's hair was really uneven and messy as it grew in so I got it cut into a bob around her chin. She looks really cute with it that length so I might keep her hair shorter. Unless she wants to let it grow. :)
Dawn April 8th, 2006, 07:29 PM I will let the girls' hair probably get a little longer than their mid-back (James would probably say longer than that if you asked him). Alexia has very curly hair. Once it gets longer it will weigh down and hopefully be a little 'easier' to manage. She has alot of hair and it's full of body. Luckily, she has no probs when I brush it or fix it up in any way. :) Like Colleen, we only use adult shampoo and conditioner on her hair. We have to.
She got her first haircut ever several mos ago.... she was about 3 3/4 yrs. old. She had about 3, maybe 4 inches cut. Her hair is so curly that when it's wet it goes way down to the bottom of her back. In curly, dry mode it's longer than her shoulders.
I know I loved having long hair as a child, and Alexia loves it too. As long as she still likes it, we'll be growing it for a long while. And the same for Angelina too. :) I can say that I doubt very highly that they will ever have short hair.
Lissa April 8th, 2006, 09:42 PM Jen, I'd be livid!!!
Anne, OMG! OMG!
We've never cut Alex's hair and she turned 3 in December. Her hair is super curly and it looks way shorter than what it actually is. When it is wet it goes about to mid-back. The front is still shorter than the back and I just pull it back in a bow, put the front in a little ponytail or put all of it in a ponytail. I don't want her to have bangs because I hated them when my mom cut my hair and gave me bangs. :)
Michele April 8th, 2006, 09:55 PM OMG, I can't believe all these MILs and babysitters who feel free to cut kid's hair. I cut Kori's (girl I babysit) nails once, b/c she scratched, herself, Jackson and myself really bad, and I felt bad about that. I can't imagine cutting hair!
Anyway...I don't have a daughter yet, but if her hair is anything like mine (curly and thick), I won't let it too long...it can be such a PITA to take care of. I wouldn't cut it too short either, b/c I don't want her looking like Annie (as I did for a while there in the early 80s!).
AmyP April 8th, 2006, 10:08 PM I haven't really thought about it. I love long hair and will probably let Sarah keep hers long if she wants to. She has to let me style it though if she wants that. I'll keep it short if she doesn't let me style it. As long as she's okay with having it back in a barette or ponytail or whatever, she can keep it long. If she wants to cut it short, that is fine with me too. I guess my limit would be waist length, but I doubt we'll let it get that long.
My mom usually let me decide what I wanted to do with my hair and I plan to do that with Sarah. Although my mom did suggest shorter styles a lot when I was younger IIRC. I really don't get why because I always looked better with long hair. Even now I don't want it any shorter than shoulder length anytime soon.
AmyP April 8th, 2006, 10:11 PM A bit OT, but the dance school I went to as a kid and in my early-mid teens required that dancers who competed have hair long enough to pull the sides up into a ponytail.
I heard a few years after I left that they ended up getting all the dancers wigs for competitions/performances so they could do as they wished with their hair. Sounds weird, but it had to be easier than the competition hairdo (lots and lots of tight curls, meaning you had to have your hair in curlers the night before, ick).
